No—not automatically. A 1000Hz monitor needs a connection that supports its selected resolution, refresh rate and color depth, but that connection does not have to be DisplayPort in every case. The monitor input, graphics-card output, cable and any adapters or docks must all support the same signal mode.
What determines whether a connection can run at 1000Hz?
Refresh rate is only one part of the signal. Resolution and color depth also affect the bandwidth required. Intel’s guidance is to check that the requested signal bandwidth fits within the cable’s effective bandwidth; its overview explains the relationship between those signal properties: Intel: How to use bandwidth to determine the best video output.
For 1000Hz to work, each link in the chain must support the chosen mode:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

- The GPU’s output must support that same mode.
- The cable must be capable of carrying the signal between them.
- Adapters, docks and other devices in the chain must not limit the mode.
A higher-rated cable cannot add a refresh rate that the monitor input or GPU does not support.

Does it have to be DisplayPort?
No general rule says that a 1000Hz monitor must use DisplayPort. HDMI may also support the target mode on a particular monitor, but the connector label alone does not establish that. Check the exact model’s manual or specification for the maximum refresh rate supported by each input at the resolution and color depth you plan to use.
For example, LG’s listing for the 25G590B-B names both DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR20 and HDMI 2.1, and describes the monitor as supporting up to 1000Hz natively and 1100Hz overclocked. The listing available at LG’s 25G590B-B product page does not identify which input reaches those refresh rates. It is therefore not enough to recommend one of those ports for the maximum mode without checking the model’s complete documentation.

When does a special cable matter?
A cable matters when its supported bandwidth or certification is below what the documented signal path requires. For context, Intel lists maximum effective bandwidth figures of 42.67 Gbps for HDMI 2.1, 25.92 Gbps for DisplayPort 1.3/1.4, and 77.37 Gbps for DisplayPort 2.0. These are interface figures, not guarantees that a specific monitor and GPU combination supports a particular timing.
VESA says DisplayPort 2.1b supports a maximum payload of 77.37 Gbps. It identifies DP80 and DP80LL UHBR20 cables as capable of up to 80 Gbps throughput; for DP80LL active cables, VESA specifies a length of up to three meters. Those cable capabilities do not, by themselves, ensure 1000Hz on an unspecified system. If the monitor manual calls for a UHBR20 DisplayPort connection, investigate a VESA-certified DP80 or DP80LL cable and confirm compatibility with the devices. See VESA’s DisplayPort FAQ for the standard and cable details.

How to check your setup
- Look up the exact monitor model. In its manual or full specifications, find the maximum resolution, refresh rate and color depth supported by each input. Do not assume every port supports the monitor’s advertised maximum.
- Check the GPU output. Confirm it supports the same resolution, refresh rate, color depth and interface mode. A monitor’s capability does not establish that the computer can deliver it.
- Match the cable to the documented link. Check the cable’s supported capability or certification against the signal requirements. For UHBR20, check whether the device documentation specifies a DP80/DP80LL cable.
- Remove possible bottlenecks. When troubleshooting, connect directly to the supported GPU output rather than through an adapter or dock, then verify the operating system’s refresh-rate setting and that the graphics driver is current.
- Check application limits. A display set to 1000Hz does not guarantee that a particular game will render 1000 frames per second. LG notes that performance for the 25G590B-B can depend on PC specifications, game-specific frame-rate limits, OS version and graphics drivers.
What the bandwidth figures do—and do not—tell you
Bandwidth figures help compare interface and cable capabilities, but they are not a substitute for a mode-specific specification. DisplayPort 2.1b’s stated maximum payload and DP80 cable throughput describe what the standard and cable class can carry; the monitor, GPU and selected signal still determine whether a 1000Hz mode is available. Likewise, a port marked HDMI 2.1 or DisplayPort 2.1 does not reveal the maximum refresh rate for every resolution and color depth.
