Choose docs-as-code when your contributors already use Git and documentation needs review, version history, or publishing tied to software changes. Choose a wiki or shared-document system when people need to edit easily without developer tools, or when your team does not want to maintain a documentation pipeline. Many teams benefit from using both: keep release-specific technical docs near the code and broader team knowledge in a shared space.

What docs-as-code and a wiki mean

Docs-as-code

Docs-as-code is a workflow rather than a particular product. Authors typically write in plain-text formats such as Markdown or AsciiDoc, store documents in Git, review changes with pull requests, and build or publish the result through an automated process. The specific tools vary; the defining idea is to manage documentation with practices used for software. Docs-as-code.org describes the approach, while Doctave’s guide discusses its workflow.

Wiki or shared documentation

A wiki generally gives contributors a shared knowledge space with pages edited through a web interface. Shared-document tools can serve a similar role. Features differ by product, so check the actual editing, permissions, search, page history, and governance available rather than assuming every wiki works the same way.

Compare the approaches against your team’s needs

Decision factor Docs-as-code is a stronger fit when… Wiki or shared docs are a stronger fit when…
Who contributes Authors are comfortable with Git, text formats, and pull requests. Contributors need an approachable page editor and may not use developer tools.
How changes are reviewed Changes benefit from diffs, discussion, and review before publication. Fast, direct editing matters more than a code-review-style gate.
Connection to software versions Documentation should branch, merge, or release alongside the software. Knowledge applies across releases or is not tightly coupled to a code repository.
Publishing workflow The team can build and publish docs through CI/CD or a managed service. The team wants editing and publishing with little pipeline upkeep.
Ongoing ownership Someone can own templates, builds, hosting, search, and maintenance. The team prefers a hosted knowledge system with less infrastructure responsibility.

These are workflow-based guidelines, not measured proof that either approach produces better documentation. The cited guides describe Git collaboration, pull requests, and version alignment as common docs-as-code practices; they also note that self-managed generators can leave teams responsible for building, hosting, search, and maintenance. Understand the practical tradeoffs

Docs-as-code: stronger change control, more setup

Git makes changes reviewable and attributable, and it can preserve documentation history alongside the code it describes. Automation can also connect builds and publishing to the team’s existing development workflow. Those benefits come with requirements: authors need enough Git fluency to contribute, and the team must establish conventions and maintain the build, hosting, search, and publishing process. A managed service can reduce some infrastructure work, but the team still needs to own its content and workflow.

Wiki or shared docs: easier contribution, deliberate governance

A web-based editor can make updates accessible to people who do not work in Git, broadening who can contribute. The team still needs to decide who owns pages, how approvals work, how to find and correct stale information, and where release-specific material belongs. A low-friction editor does not by itself settle those responsibilities.

Decide where each kind of documentation belongs

  1. List the documentation you maintain. Separate product and API docs, operational runbooks, policies, onboarding material, and informal team knowledge.
  2. Identify the contributors for each type. Consider who needs to create and update it, and which tools those people already use.
  3. Check the need for review and version alignment. Ask whether changes need a formal review trail and whether readers need the text to match a particular software release.
  4. Choose a home by workflow. Put version-sensitive material in Git when review and alignment with software matter. Use a wiki or shared-document space when broad access and low-friction updates matter more.
  5. Assign ongoing ownership. Name who is responsible for navigation, search, permissions, publishing, and reviewing stale content, regardless of the platform.

This framework follows the workflow characteristics described by docs-as-code.org, Doctave, and Write the Docs’ community guide; it is a practical decision aid, not a universal rule proven by head-to-head outcome data.

Use a hybrid when documentation has different audiences

A hybrid can keep technical information that changes with a product—such as API references or release-specific instructions—close to the relevant code, while using a wiki or shared space for cross-team policies, onboarding, and informal knowledge. To prevent competing versions, decide which location is authoritative for each document type and link readers to that source rather than maintaining duplicate copies.
