Docker health checks can detect when a service stops responding as expected, but they do not automatically restart a container that is still running. To make a homelab recover from that condition, pair a useful health probe with a health-aware controller or host automation. Keep Docker restart policies too, if you also want Docker to recover containers whose main process exits.

What a Docker health check does—and what it does not do

A Docker HEALTHCHECK runs a command inside a container and records whether the service is starting, healthy, or unhealthy. Docker changes the status to unhealthy after the configured number of consecutive failed checks. The instruction is a detector, not a repair action: it does not by itself restart a container whose process is still running.

That distinction matters because Docker restart policies and health status handle different events. Policies such as unless-stopped and on-failure govern what Docker does when a container exits; they do not promise to restart a live container simply because its health check fails. Docker documents the policy options as no, on-failure, always, and unless-stopped in its restart policy documentation.

Choose a recovery mechanism for the failure you want to fix

There are three distinct approaches. They can complement each other, but they are not interchangeable.

Approach What triggers it Acts on a running, unhealthy container? Where it runs and key trade-off
Docker restart policy The container exits. No; a health status change alone is not an exit. Docker Engine manages it. It is simple for process exits, but does not make health checks self-healing.
Health-aware controller The controller observes an unhealthy status. Yes, if configured to restart that container. Runs as a separate service or process and needs access to control Docker. Review its permissions, restart limits, logs, and dependency behavior.
Host-side automation or process manager Depends on the configured monitoring and action. Potentially, if it reads health status and issues a restart. Runs outside the container. It adds host-level configuration and can conflict with Docker restart policies; Docker cautions against combining restart policies with host process managers.

For a self-healing setup, the critical component is the actor that notices the unhealthy state and takes action. That can be an external controller or host automation, or the application can be designed to exit when it cannot recover so that an exit-triggered restart policy can act. Do not assume a third-party controller is safe or reliable solely because it can restart containers: verify its Docker-daemon access, behavior during repeated failures, and observability before relying on it.

Write a health check that tests useful readiness

The probe should be lightweight, side-effect-free, and tied to the service outcome you actually need. Docker’s Dockerfile reference shows an HTTP check using curl -f, but that only works if the image includes curl and the URL meaningfully represents service readiness. A process existing, or a port accepting connections, may not prove that a request the user depends on will succeed.

Define the check in the image or Compose configuration using a command available in that environment. For example, if the application exposes a meaningful local HTTP readiness endpoint and the image contains curl, a probe can request that endpoint and return failure when it does not respond successfully. Avoid checks that modify data or rely on an unrelated external system unless that external failure is specifically what you want to detect.

Tune the timing to the application

Set the interval, timeout, startup grace period, and retry count based on how long the service takes to initialize and how much transient failure you can tolerate. Docker documents defaults of a 30-second interval, a 30-second timeout, a zero-second start period, a five-second start interval, and three retries. These are defaults, not recommended values for every service. The start_interval option requires Docker Engine 25.0 or later; check your installed Engine version before using it.

A shorter interval can detect a failure sooner, but can also run the probe more often during normal operation. A longer start period can prevent a slow-starting application from being marked unhealthy prematurely. Choose retry and timeout values that distinguish a sustained failure from a brief delay, rather than copying settings without regard to the service.

Use Compose health checks for startup ordering, not runtime repair

Compose can wait for a dependency to become healthy before starting a dependent service. In a service’s depends_on configuration, use condition: service_healthy and define a health check for the dependency. Docker’s Compose startup-order guide explains why this is useful: Compose normally waits for a container to be running, not necessarily ready to serve requests.

The guide’s PostgreSQL example uses a 10-second interval, 10-second timeout, five retries, and a 30-second start period. Those are example settings for that guide, not universal timings. Also distinguish startup gating from recovery: Compose’s depends_on restart: true applies to explicit Compose-controlled dependency updates or restarts. It is not an ongoing instruction to restart a dependent service whenever a dependency becomes unhealthy at runtime.

Verify detection and recovery separately

First confirm that the probe reports the failure you intended to detect. Then confirm that the chosen recovery actor sees that state and performs the configured action. Docker exposes health-check output and health-status events for this troubleshooting; see its health-check reference and container run documentation.

  • Inspect the container’s health status and recorded probe output to determine whether the command ran, what it returned, and why it failed.
  • Watch the health_status event stream while testing a deliberately failing probe, then verify that the controller or host automation reacts as expected.
  • Test the recovery path under repeated failures and check its logs and restart limits so a persistent fault does not create an uncontrolled restart loop.
  • Check dependent services explicitly. A container becoming healthy does not prove every downstream service, network route, or external dependency is working; scope each probe to the failure that matters.
