If a Docker application starts returning EACCES: permission denied after an image update, compare the process’s effective UID and GID with the permissions on the path it is trying to access. A new image could use a different configured identity, but the timing alone does not prove that it did. The exact image tags, runtime settings, mount definition, and observed ownership are needed to identify the cause.

Why can an image update lead to EACCES?

A process can read or write a mounted path only when its effective identity has the required permissions. Docker containers run as UID 0 by default, but a Dockerfile’s USER instruction or a runtime override such as --user can select another user or UID/GID. An image update may coincide with a change to that configured identity; verify the old and new values rather than assuming they changed. See Docker’s container run documentation.

A bind mount makes a host path available at a container path. The host filesystem’s ownership and permission bits still matter, as does the mount’s read/write setting. Docker documents that bind mounts are read-write by default, though mount options can make one read-only. A read-only mount can explain a failed write even when ownership appears suitable. See Docker’s bind mount documentation.

A displayed user name is not enough to establish access: compare numeric IDs and the actual permissions on the target and its parent directories. Also distinguish a bind mount from a Docker-managed volume before treating a host directory’s ownership as the explanation.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How to check the container UID against the mount

  1. Record the image and identity settings. Note the exact image name and old and new tags. Check the image’s Dockerfile or metadata for USER, and inspect runtime overrides such as Compose’s user: or docker run --user. Docker’s run documentation describes both the default user and the ability to override it: Run containers.
  2. Inspect the running process. In the affected container, run id to see the effective UID and GID. Check the failing path and its parent directories for the permissions the operation requires. If the application runs as a different process user than the interactive shell, inspect the application process’s identity instead.
  3. Inspect the host source path. On the host, check numeric ownership and permission bits for the source directory or file. Confirm that the effective identity has the needed access, including directory traversal permissions on each parent path. Compare numeric IDs, not just user or group names.
  4. Confirm the mount type and options. Inspect the container’s mount declaration and determine whether the path is a bind mount or a named volume. For a write failure, confirm that the mount is not read-only. A bind mount’s source is a host path; a Docker-managed volume is a different storage arrangement.
  5. Check identity mapping. Establish whether Docker uses rootless mode or userns-remap. These modes translate container UIDs and GIDs to host identities, so the container’s numeric ID may not be the host ID that needs access. Apply the relevant mapping before drawing conclusions from a direct comparison.
  6. Change permissions only after confirming the cause. If the mapped process identity lacks access, adjust ownership or permissions to meet the application’s need and the host’s security policy. Do not make a path world-writable as a default fix.

What changes in rootless mode or with userns-remap?

With ordinary UID mapping, comparing the process’s numeric IDs to host ownership is relatively direct. Rootless Docker and user namespace remapping change that relationship: container IDs map to different host IDs. Docker documents these modes and their mapping behavior in its rootless mode documentation and user namespace remapping documentation. Account for the active mapping before changing host ownership; otherwise, a seemingly matching container UID may not correspond to the host identity that accesses the files.

How to distinguish other likely causes

  • Identity changed: The effective UID/GID differs between the old and new container configuration, and the mapped identity lacks the required permissions.
  • Host path permissions: The identity is as expected, but the host source path or a parent directory does not grant the needed access.
  • Read-only mount: The operation writes, but the mount declaration or options prevent writes.
  • Wrong mount assumption: The application uses a Docker-managed volume rather than a bind mount, so host bind-source ownership is not the right first explanation.
  • Mount-source creation issue: The problem occurs while Docker is creating or resolving the host-side source, rather than when the application accesses the mounted path. Treat daemon or source-path errors separately from an application process receiving EACCES inside the container.

Compare the old and new effective identities, the host path’s ownership and permissions, mount type and mode, and any UID/GID mapping. Without the image tags, deployment configuration, host details, and observed ownership, no single cause or corrective ownership change can be established.
