No—most people do not need a dedicated gaming monitor. It can be a worthwhile upgrade if your current screen’s refresh rate or motion performance limits the games you play, especially fast-paced or competitive titles. If your games run well and your display looks and feels good to you, a standard monitor or TV may be all you need.
What a gaming monitor can improve
The main benefit is often a higher refresh rate: the number of times per second a display can update its image, measured in hertz (Hz). A higher rate can make movement look smoother and the display feel more responsive, particularly in games with fast camera movement or quick reactions. It does not automatically improve image quality in every respect, nor does it make a game run faster.
Refresh rate and frame rate are different. Refresh rate is a monitor specification; frame rate, measured in frames per second (fps), is how many frames the PC or console sends. To make practical use of a high-refresh display, the source device and game must produce enough frames, and the connection must carry the chosen resolution and refresh rate. A faster monitor cannot create frames the system cannot render. RTINGS explains the distinction and its gaming implications.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat the frame-time figures mean
RTINGS’ 2026 examples put the time represented by one refresh at 16.67 milliseconds for 60Hz, 8.33ms for 120Hz, 6.94ms for 144Hz, and 4.17ms for 240Hz. These are frame-time calculations, not measurements of total system latency and not a guarantee that every player will notice a particular improvement. The gains become smaller as the refresh rate rises, so moving from 60Hz to 120Hz is a larger step in frame time than moving from 120Hz to 144Hz. RTINGS’ refresh-rate explainer discusses these examples and diminishing returns.

Who is most likely to benefit?
Fast-paced and competitive games
A higher refresh rate is most compelling for games where motion and quick input matter, such as competitive shooters or fast action games. The advantage depends on the complete setup: a high-refresh monitor is most useful when the PC or console and the game can supply more frames, and when the display handles those transitions well.
Slower, turn-based, and visually detailed games
If you mainly play turn-based games or slower-paced titles, a high refresh rate may make less practical difference. For visually detailed games, you may prefer higher resolution even if that means choosing a lower refresh rate. There is no universal ideal: the right balance depends on your games and what you value in the image.

- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
Players who are satisfied with their current display
A 60Hz display can still be fine for gaming. If you are not bothered by motion on your current screen and your games perform as you want, there is no technical requirement to replace it. RTINGS notes that 60Hz can remain suitable for gaming.

Why refresh rate is not the whole story
Two monitors with the same refresh rate can show motion differently. Pixel response time—the speed at which pixels change from one color to another—also affects clarity. Slow transitions can leave visible blur; overly aggressive transitions can create inverse ghosting or other artifacts. So an advertised Hz figure by itself does not establish how clear motion will look. See RTINGS’ response-time test explanation for how pixel transitions affect motion.

Variable refresh rate for uneven frame rates
Variable refresh rate (VRR) lets a compatible display adjust its refresh behavior to match a source’s changing frame rate. This can reduce screen tearing and stutter when frame delivery varies. VRR only helps when the monitor and source device support compatible formats and operating ranges; confirm both before buying. RTINGS’ refresh-rate test overview explains refresh-rate matching, and its gaming-monitor guide covers selection considerations.
How to decide whether an upgrade makes sense
- Start with your games. If you play fast action or competitive games, smoother motion may matter more. If you mostly play slower games, prioritize the features you notice, such as resolution or image quality.
- Check what your device and games can deliver. Compare the refresh rate you are considering with the frame rates your PC or console can actually produce in your games. A monitor’s Hz rating is not the same as the source’s fps.
- Check the entire signal path. Confirm that the monitor, PC or console, game, and cable or connection support your intended resolution and refresh rate. Bandwidth limits can affect which combinations are available. RTINGS’ testing overview discusses connection bandwidth and refresh rate.
- Compare motion performance, not just the headline number. Look for response-time performance and motion artifacts as well as refresh rate.
- Verify VRR compatibility if you want it. Check the formats and refresh range supported by both the monitor and your source.
- Balance resolution and refresh rate. Higher resolution can affect the refresh rate achievable through a particular display, source, and connection. Choose the balance that fits your games and hardware.
What console players should check
RTINGS’ article updated September 15, 2026, reports that PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2 support up to 120Hz. That platform ceiling does not mean every game runs at 120fps or every output mode uses 120Hz. Check the current console specifications, the individual game, and the selected output mode before choosing a display. RTINGS’ console and refresh-rate discussion is the source for the reported platform limits.

Features to compare before buying
| Feature | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Refresh rate | Can make motion appear smoother and feel more responsive. | Whether your device and games can supply frame rates that make use of it. |
| Response time and motion artifacts | Pixel transitions affect blur and ghosting independently of the refresh-rate rating. | Real motion performance, not only advertised specifications. |
| VRR | Can reduce tearing and stutter when frame rates vary. | Compatible formats and operating range on both monitor and source. |
| Resolution | Changes image detail and may affect the refresh rate available in a given setup. | Support across the monitor, source, game, and connection. |
| Connection bandwidth | Can constrain the resolution and refresh-rate combination you can use. | That the complete signal path supports your intended output. |
For a broader checklist of monitor selection factors, consult RTINGS’ gaming-monitor guide. The best choice depends on what your current display lacks and what your setup can support—not on the word “gaming” in a product name.
