Usually, no. Sharpen the shovel’s existing beveled working edge—normally the soil-facing side—not both sides. A light pass on the back is appropriate only to remove a burr left by filing; it should not create a second bevel.
Why sharpen only the beveled side?
A conventional shovel is designed with one working bevel. Filing a matching bevel on the other side changes the blade’s edge geometry; UC ANR warns that sharpening both sides reduces a shovel’s effectiveness and stability. Follow the bevel that is already there rather than trying to make the two sides symmetrical.
Some guidance uses shorthand that can sound as if both sides should be sharpened. UF/IFAS says to file “one edge” and then “repeat on the other side,” but more specific shovel guidance from UC ANR and other extension sources calls for sharpening only the beveled working side. The useful distinction is between forming a bevel and removing a burr: the back may need a very light deburring pass, but not a second cutting bevel.
How to sharpen a shovel with a file
- Clean and secure the blade. Remove soil and debris, then hold the shovel firmly in a vise or suitable clamps so it cannot shift while you work.
- Find the existing bevel. Hold a mill file at the same angle as that bevel. If the edge has no visible bevel, 45 degrees to the flat blade is a starting reference from Kansas State and UConn Extension, not a universal specification.
- File the working edge. Push the file forward in controlled strokes along the edge; mill files cut on the forward stroke, so ease pressure on the return. Work evenly across the blade and stop when the bevel is clean and consistent.
- Check for a burr. If filing has raised a thin lip of metal on the back, turn the shovel over and use a light pass to remove it. Do not keep filing until the back develops its own bevel.
The goal is a durable edge that enters soil more readily, not a razor edge. Taking off too much metal can leave the edge thin and prone to bending.

File or grinder: which should you use?
| Method | Best suited to | Trade-offs and care |
|---|---|---|
| Mill file | Routine sharpening and controlled edge maintenance | Removes metal gradually, making it easier to preserve the existing bevel and avoid thinning the blade. |
| Grinder | A very dull or damaged edge that needs more substantial repair | Removes metal quickly and may leave a rough edge that should be refined with a file. Wear eye and hearing protection, secure the shovel, and avoid overheating or thinning the blade. |
For ordinary maintenance, a file gives you more control. Use a grinder only when the condition of the edge calls for it and you can work safely.
