No—you can follow the basic premise without playing the Watch Dogs games in order. Release order—Watch Dogs, Watch Dogs 2, then Watch Dogs: Legion—is best for context, especially if you plan to play Legion’s Bloodline expansion. The documented carryovers are limited: some progress transfers between versions of the same game, and Bloodline makes returning characters available in Legion. Ubisoft’s cited material does not describe campaign saves or general progression transferring between the numbered games.
Do you need to play Watch Dogs in order?
No. The games share a setting and have character connections, but the available Ubisoft material does not say you must finish an earlier game to understand Watch Dogs: Legion or its central premise. You can start with Legion if that is the game you want to play.

For the most context, play in release order: Watch Dogs → Watch Dogs 2 → Watch Dogs: Legion. Ubisoft calls Legion the series’ third entry on its Watch Dogs franchise page. Earlier entries also give you more background for characters who return in Legion’s Bloodline expansion.

“Carry over” can mean different things here. Ubisoft’s documented examples concern progress within the same game or character availability inside Legion; they do not establish save or progression transfer from one numbered Watch Dogs game to another.

| Carryover | What Ubisoft describes | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| Legion across console generations | Ubisoft’s October 29, 2020 launch article said buyers of the Xbox One or PS4 version could upgrade to the corresponding next-generation version and keep progress through cross-generation progression. See Ubisoft’s launch announcement. | It is progress for the same title across console generations, not a transfer from Watch Dogs or Watch Dogs 2. |
| Watch Dogs 2 trial to full game | Ubisoft said progress from its three-hour Watch Dogs 2 trial could transfer to the full version of Watch Dogs 2 in its January 27, 2017 trial announcement. | This applies within Watch Dogs 2, not between the numbered games. |
| Bloodline characters in Legion | Ubisoft said the Season Pass version of Bloodline allowed Aiden Pearce and Wrench to be added to the main campaign or Online roster. Details are in Ubisoft’s expansion announcement. | Character availability is not a transfer of old saves, upgrades, inventory, or general progress from earlier games. |
In the cited material, Ubisoft describes no campaign-save, inventory, upgrade, or general progression transfer between the numbered titles. That is a limit on what these sources establish, rather than a claim about every platform or edition.
Where does Bloodline fit?
Bloodline is a prequel adventure for Watch Dogs: Legion, not a fourth main-series entry. Ubisoft’s July 6, 2021 announcement describes Aiden Pearce and Wrench returning for the expansion.

The story begins when Aiden visits London to steal a robot-controlling device from Broca Tech. Wrench takes the device, and Aiden is pressured to recover it to protect his estranged nephew, Jackson. Playing the earlier games first can add context for these returning characters, but it is not presented as a requirement for starting Bloodline.

Which game should you start with?
- Choose Watch Dogs first if you want the series in release order and the earliest context for Aiden Pearce.
- Choose Watch Dogs 2 first if that is the entry that interests you; Ubisoft’s trial-to-full-game progress option was specific to this title.
- Start with Watch Dogs: Legion if you want to play it now. The earlier games are useful for character context, particularly for Bloodline, but the cited sources do not make them prerequisites.
