Why Persona 3 and Persona 5 are not prerequisites
Persona 4 Revival is a remake of Persona 4 Golden. Its story follows a transfer student in rural Inaba, where a strange television broadcast and a series of murders disrupt daily life. The Xbox listing describes investigating the Midnight Channel, solving murders, fighting Shadows, and balancing school, friendships, sports, and part-time work. Xbox’s game listing and SEGA’s announcement frame the experience around this cast and mystery.

SEGA’s official franchise material describes the game as accessible to first-time players. The official overviews do not say that understanding its plot depends on Persona 3 Reload or Persona 5 Royal. They also do not promise that there will be no cameos or references, so the safest expectation is that prior games are unnecessary for following the main story—not that every possible connection has been ruled out. Xbox’s Persona franchise page presents the entries as distinct stories.

As of October 7, 2026, SEGA lists Persona 4 Revival for February 18, 2027, on Xbox Series X|S, Windows, Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation 5, and Steam. SEGA also lists a physical standard edition. Platform availability and editions may vary by region, and release details can change; check the relevant store before buying. SEGA’s release announcement has the announced date and platforms.

At the same date, the US Xbox digital store listed the game as a preorder at $69.99 for the base game, $84.99 for Digital Deluxe, and $99.99 for Digital Premium. These are US storefront prices and may change. The store also described preorder bonus music tracks from Persona 3 Reload and Persona 5 Royal; they are extras, not a reason to play either game first.
