A Wi-Fi extender is worth considering when your router works well through most of your home but leaves one or two weak spots—and you can place the extender where it still receives a strong signal. It repeats the router’s Wi-Fi; it does not increase the internet speed supplied by your provider. For several dead zones or multiple floors, compare mesh Wi-Fi; where walls or floors disrupt wireless links, consider Ethernet or powerline networking.
When a Wi-Fi extender is the right fix
A range extender receives your router’s existing wireless signal and rebroadcasts it into an area that signal does not reach well. It is a targeted fix: you keep your router and address a localized weak spot rather than redesigning coverage throughout the home.
The important condition is that the extender itself must receive a usable signal. If you put it in the dead zone, it may have too little connection to repeat. The extender also cannot raise the internet speed coming into your home beyond what your service and router provide.
Choose an option based on the shape of the problem
| Situation | First option to consider | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi works well except in one or two localized areas | Range extender | Whether a placement between the router and weak area still receives a strong signal; compatibility with the router; and whether roaming behavior meets your needs. |
| Several weak areas, a larger home, or multiple floors | Mesh Wi-Fi | Node placement, building materials, wireless or wired backhaul, compatibility, and whether you want one coordinated network. |
| Thick walls or floors make the wireless link unreliable | Ethernet-connected access point or powerline networking | Whether Ethernet can be run. Powerline results depend on the home’s electrical wiring and the specific setup. |
| The router may be poorly positioned | Reposition the router first | Whether a central, elevated, open location is practical and away from major obstructions or interference sources. |
These are decision guides, not performance guarantees. The cited manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal range or a comparative independent performance test.

Try router placement before buying anything
If practical, move the router to a central, elevated, open location. Walls, floors, large metal objects, and sources of interference can affect how far its signal reaches. Repositioning may improve distribution, but it will not overcome every obstruction or home layout. TP-Link’s placement advice is in its router placement guide.
Place an extender where the router signal is still strong
Put the extender between the router and the weak area, not at the farthest point where Wi-Fi has already disappeared. TP-Link’s guide, last updated April 17, 2026, recommends roughly halfway between them, where the router signal remains strong. It gives approximate distances of 25–40 feet for models with external antennas and 20–35 feet for internal-antenna models, under conditions with few obstacles and a strong router signal. These are conditional manufacturer placement guidelines—not a universal range specification or a promise of coverage. Obstacles may mean the extender needs to be closer to the router. See TP-Link’s extender placement guide.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Raise the device to around router height and avoid floors, corners, mirrors, large metal surfaces, walls, cabinets, masonry, and nearby sources of interference such as microwaves, cordless phones, refrigerators, and baby monitors. Follow the manual for your specific model: antenna design and indicator behavior differ.
If you cannot find a stable wireless position, TP-Link describes another setup: place the extender near the area needing coverage, connect it to the router with Ethernet, and configure access-point mode. That avoids relying on a weak wireless hop, provided a cable route is practical.

When mesh, powerline, or a wired access point makes more sense
Mesh Wi-Fi for broader coverage
Mesh is a broader option to consider when several areas need better coverage or the home spans multiple floors. Coordinated nodes can extend coverage across the layout, but placement, building materials, backhaul, and equipment compatibility still matter. Check whether the proposed configuration replaces your existing router and whether you want the nodes to operate as one coordinated network. Mesh does not create internet speed beyond your service plan. TP-Link’s guidance on the tradeoffs between mesh and extenders is at mesh Wi-Fi versus range extenders.
There is no fixed mesh distance that applies to every home. TP-Link’s May 8, 2026 Deco guidance recommends no more than 50 feet between wireless Deco units for its best-experience guidance; do not treat that as a rule for other mesh brands or a guarantee in every layout. Ethernet backhaul makes node placement more flexible. Details are in TP-Link’s Deco range and placement guide.

Powerline networking when wireless is obstructed
Powerline adapters carry network connectivity over a home’s electrical wiring. They may be worth considering when walls or floors make a wireless link unreliable, but performance depends on the wiring and specific setup. The available guidance does not establish what throughput an individual home will get, so do not assume the adapters will solve the problem without checking the actual setup.
An Ethernet-connected access point when a cable route is possible
An access point placed near the weak area and connected back to the router with Ethernet avoids depending on a weak wireless connection between devices. It is a practical alternative when running a cable is feasible and you want to extend coverage at that location.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why no single coverage distance applies to every home
Actual coverage depends on the home’s layout and materials, interference, wireless band, equipment, and device placement. A distance that is workable in an open space may not be in a home with obstructing walls or floors. Treat manufacturer spacing suggestions as guidance for the named equipment and conditions, not as a radius you can expect everywhere.
Before choosing, consider how many areas and floors are affected, whether a proposed extender or mesh node would receive a usable signal, whether Ethernet is possible, and whether you need coordinated roaming or a single network name. Check compatibility with your existing hardware and weigh the added setup against the size of the coverage problem.
