For most people, you do not need a VPN with Tor Browser, and the Tor Project advises against combining them unless you are an advanced user who understands how to configure both. A poorly configured combination can reduce anonymity or break Tor’s protections. Two providers, Proton VPN and NordVPN, document features that route traffic into Tor from their own servers. Those features are real options, but the sources we checked do not show that either one is safer or better than the alternatives, so this article does not offer a ranked list of five VPNs.

What the Tor Project says about using a VPN

The Tor Project’s support guidance on “Using Tor Browser with a VPN” puts the position plainly: “Generally speaking, we don’t recommend using a VPN with Tor unless you’re an advanced user who knows how to configure both in a way that doesn’t compromise your privacy.” The same guidance warns that a VPN can reduce anonymity or break Tor protections when it is set up incorrectly.

That warning should shape how you read any “best VPN for Tor” article. A VPN is an optional layer, not a required one, and it is not a general privacy booster that can be stacked on top of Tor to make it stronger.

What Tor Browser already does

Tor Browser sends your traffic through three randomly chosen relays. The Tor Browser manual, under “About Tor Browser,” says that your internet service provider and anyone watching your connection locally “will not be able to track your internet activity, including the names and addresses of the websites you visit.” Websites you visit see a connection coming from the Tor network rather than your real IP address. The manual also states that Tor Browser is designed to resist browser fingerprinting, meaning the collection of details about your browser and device that can single you out.

Those protections belong to Tor Browser specifically. They do not transfer to other browsers, and they do not depend on whether a VPN is also running.

What a VPN changes, and what it does not

Adding a VPN changes who sees the first step of your connection. Instead of your internet provider seeing your traffic going to a Tor entry point, the VPN provider sees your connection to its server, and the VPN server then connects to Tor. In other words, the VPN provider becomes the first service in the route and can observe that connection. You are trading trust in your ISP for trust in the VPN company, and that trade is not automatically an improvement.

The table below separates three setups that are often confused.

Setup Where your traffic enters the Tor network Who can observe your first connection Fingerprinting defenses Main trade-off
Tor Browser alone Through Tor’s three random relays Your ISP and local observers cannot see which websites you visit, per the Tor Browser manual Designed to resist fingerprinting, per the Tor Browser manual Tor is slower than a regular connection, as Proton VPN notes for its own Tor servers
Tor Browser with a separate VPN running underneath VPN server first, then Tor The VPN provider can see your connection to its servers Still Tor Browser’s design, but the Tor Project warns that a misconfigured VPN can reduce anonymity Added setup complexity and a second company in the route; the Tor Project advises against it for most users
A provider’s Tor-routing feature (for example, Proton VPN Tor servers or NordVPN Onion Over VPN) From the provider’s VPN server into Tor The VPN provider can see your connection to its servers Not stated for a regular browser; Tor Browser’s fingerprinting protections are not transferred to other browsers Speed and usability; Proton VPN warns that Tor is much slower than a regular VPN connection

These are the only two named providers in the sources we reviewed with official documentation of Tor-routing features. Both pages were checked in October 2026, and provider features can change.

Proton VPN Tor servers

Proton VPN’s support page describes Tor servers that send traffic from a Proton VPN server into the Tor network. Servers that support this are marked in its apps. The page warns that Tor is much slower than a regular VPN because traffic passes through at least three volunteer-run nodes. It also notes a platform caveat: on macOS and on iOS/iPadOS, enabling the kill switch may be necessary for connections to onion sites.

NordVPN Onion Over VPN

NordVPN describes Onion Over VPN as a feature that routes traffic through Tor after a VPN connection, and says it can allow access to onion sites in a regular browser. This is a vendor’s description of its own feature. It does not mean that a regular browser gains Tor Browser’s anti-fingerprinting protections, and the sources we checked do not establish how Onion Over VPN compares with Proton VPN or with Tor Browser alone.

Logging claims and audits: what they do and do not prove

Both providers publish no-logs claims. NordVPN’s no-logs page describes reviews by PricewaterhouseCoopers AG Switzerland in 2018 and 2020, and by Deloitte in 2022, 2023, and 2024, and reports that the reviewers concluded its policy was valid and that browsing activity was not logged. Those are NordVPN’s own descriptions of the reviews, and we have not independently verified the reports themselves.

A no-logs policy describes what a provider says it stores. It does not prevent a provider from being compelled to disclose data it holds, and it does not make you anonymous on its own. Jurisdiction, a “no logs” label, and extra encryption layers are not standalone anonymity guarantees.

Why there is no five-provider ranking here

A ranked list of the best VPNs for Tor Browser needs more than marketing pages. It needs a stated testing method, current independent testing or disclosures for every provider named, and a consistent way to judge speed, reliability, logging policy, audit scope and setup difficulty. The sources we checked did not supply that comparable evidence for five providers, and we have not tested any of these services ourselves. Any list claiming five verified winners would be overstating what is known.

If you still want to combine them

The Tor Project’s advice assumes you know what you are doing. If you decide to proceed anyway, the following checks reflect the caveats above:

  • Confirm you understand what the Tor Project’s warning is about before changing anything.
  • Expect slower connections. Proton VPN explicitly warns that Tor routing is much slower.
  • If you use Proton VPN Tor servers on macOS or iOS/iPadOS and need onion-site access, check whether the kill switch needs to be enabled, as Proton’s support page describes.
  • Do not assume that a regular browser used to reach onion sites has Tor Browser’s fingerprinting protections.
  • Decide which company you are willing to trust with your connection before you connect, since the VPN provider sees that connection.
  • If your threat model is serious, such as protecting a source or avoiding targeted surveillance, get advice from a qualified security organization rather than relying on a general VPN guide.

Bottom line

Use Tor Browser on its own unless you have a specific reason and the knowledge to add a VPN. If you do add one, the choice is between trusting your ISP or trusting a VPN company with your first connection, and the Tor Project’s warning about misconfiguration applies. Proton VPN and NordVPN are the two providers whose Tor-routing features are documented here, and their pages describe both the feature and its trade-offs.
