No—most people do not need a smart scale. It can automatically log your weight and help you follow a trend at home. Its body-fat, muscle, and similar readings are estimates, however, not direct scans or medical diagnoses. If your goal is simply to track weight, a basic scale may do the job; if you want to assess body composition or investigate a health concern, a smart scale is not a substitute for clinical advice.
What a smart scale actually measures
A smart scale measures weight and can send that reading to an app or connected service. Many models also display body-fat percentage, muscle mass, or other composition figures. Those extra numbers usually come from bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA): the scale sends a small electrical current through the body using foot electrodes, then combines the impedance reading with information such as height, weight, and age in a prediction model.
That means the scale does not directly scan or separately weigh your fat and muscle. It estimates them using a model. The Obesity Medicine Association describes BIA as a “hydration-dependent body composition assessment procedure,” so readings can be affected by hydration. The available evidence does not establish a fixed amount by which a particular meal, workout, or other everyday factor changes an individual smart-scale result.

How accurate are smart scales for weight and body fat?
Weight: useful for following a home trend
A 2021 observational study compared three specific consumer smart scales with DXA in a French tertiary hospital sample. The study included 53 users of the Tefal Body Partner, 52 of the Terraillon DietPack, and 48 of the Nokia/Withings Body Cardio. Median absolute weight error was 0.3 kg, 0 kg, and 0.25 kg, respectively. These results suggest that the tested scales gave reasonably close weight readings in that sample, but they are not a guarantee for every model, floor, or household.

- UNLIMITED USERS: The GE body composition scale has a large weighing surface measuring 12.2 in * 13.2 in * 1.3 in (310 * 336 * 33.8 mm). It supports unlimited users, and up to 9 profiles can be created; it instantly recognizes the user when they step on the scale, perfect for families and fitness groups who want to monitor their body data to improve their health
Home measurements can also differ from measurements taken elsewhere. In a 2016 study of 58 participants using BodyTrace connected scales after a three-month internet weight-management intervention, the mean same-day home reading was 1.1 kg lower than the in-person reading. The study’s authors supported use of that scale in weight-management research and recommended weighing at a similar time of day and in similar clothing. This finding applies to that brand and study context, not every smart scale.
Body composition: estimates can be substantially wrong for an individual
In the same 2021 comparison, the body-fat estimates showed bias and broad errors. The authors concluded: “Smart scales are not accurate for body composition and should not replace DEXA in patient care.” The finding concerns the three tested models, but it illustrates the key limitation: a plausible-looking percentage on an app is not necessarily a reliable measurement of your individual body composition.

Do not assume readings from different scale brands are interchangeable. Impedance devices and prediction equations vary, and a 2019 review by Leigh C. Ward called for better protocol standardization and agreement on the smallest clinically meaningful difference between methods. A change on one device may not mean the same thing as the same-sized change on another.
Can a smart scale tell whether you are healthy?
No. Weight and BMI do not themselves measure body composition, and neither a weight reading nor an estimated body-fat percentage establishes metabolic health or diagnoses a condition. A smart scale cannot, by itself, tell you whether you have a disease or prove that a diet or exercise plan is working.

If you have a medical question, ask a clinician which assessment is appropriate. The Obesity Medicine Association describes several options, including BIA and DXA, alongside methods such as air-displacement plethysmography and underwater weighing. Each has limitations, and accuracy depends in part on equipment quality and training. Some DXA systems can measure fat, lean mass, and bone mineral, but the measures available depend on the hardware and report; accommodation may also be limited at very high BMI. DXA is useful in some clinical contexts, not an infallible answer for every person or question.
An older NHLBI guideline, which should be understood as historical guidance rather than a newly issued recommendation, says BIA loses accuracy in severely obese people and has limited usefulness for tracking total body-fat change during weight loss. It recommends BMI for assessment and body weight to follow weight loss in its clinical context.

When a smart scale is worth considering
- You want convenient weight logging. A connected scale can save readings to an app, making it easier to review weight over time than to record each measurement manually.
- You can use the number without treating it as a verdict. The scale is more useful as a way to observe a weight trend than as a source of definitive body-composition or health information.
- Regular weighing is helpful rather than stressful. If seeing frequent readings increases anxiety or encourages unhelpful behavior, the convenience of automatic tracking may not be a benefit.
When a basic scale—or no scale—is the better choice
- You only need weight readings. A basic scale can provide that without paying for connected features or giving extra attention to uncertain composition estimates.
- You want a clinical body-composition assessment. A consumer scale’s BIA estimate is not a replacement for an assessment selected and interpreted by a clinician.
- Tracking weight is not good for you. You do not need to weigh yourself simply because a device makes it easy; choose a monitoring approach that fits your needs and wellbeing.
How to make home weight readings more useful
- Use the same scale on a stable, level surface and avoid comparing its readings directly with a different device.
- Weigh at a similar time of day and in similar clothing, following the repeat-measurement protocol recommended in the BodyTrace study.
- Look at the pattern across readings rather than interpreting a single number as a health result.
- Treat body-fat and muscle figures as estimates. If a composition result matters for a medical decision, discuss an appropriate assessment with a clinician.
