No—not always. Passive speakers need an external amplifier, and an AV receiver is one way to provide it. Powered speakers have amplification built in, so they can work without a separate receiver for amplification, provided their inputs match the audio source. For passive stereo speakers, an integrated stereo amplifier may be enough; an AV receiver makes more sense when you need multiple channels or video routing.
What determines whether you need a receiver?
It depends on whether the speakers have a built-in amplifier. Passive speakers need an external amplifier to drive them. Powered speakers—also called active speakers in the cited manufacturer guidance—contain an amplifier, but still need electrical power and a compatible audio signal connection. Yamaha explains the distinction in its speaker guide.
A receiver is therefore one option for passive speakers, not a universal requirement. Denon describes an AV receiver or a dedicated power amplifier as ways to power passive speakers in its home theater guide.
Which setup fits your speakers and listening needs?
| Your setup | Likely option | Check before connecting |
|---|---|---|
| Passive speakers for stereo listening | Integrated stereo amplifier or receiver | Speaker impedance, amplifier compatibility and output, and available source inputs |
| Passive speakers for home theater or multiple channels | AV receiver | Number of channels, source and video connections, impedance, and power compatibility |
| Powered speakers | No separate receiver is needed for amplification | Electrical power, the source’s output, and the speaker’s input compatibility |
| Passive subwoofer | External amplifier or a receiver output specifically compatible with it | Confirm the subwoofer and amplifier or receiver support; a line-level subwoofer output should not be assumed to power a passive subwoofer |
Passive stereo: an integrated amplifier can be enough
For a two-channel system that does not need video routing or additional home-theater channels, a stereo integrated amplifier can power passive speakers. Denon’s amplifier buying guide distinguishes integrated amplifiers from AV receivers, which can handle video processing and routing and support more channels.

Home theater: consider an AV receiver
An AV receiver is a practical choice when you need to connect several speakers or route video as well as audio. It is still important to check that its outputs and supported speaker impedance suit the speakers you plan to use.
Powered speakers: match the source connection
Powered speakers do not need an external receiver to amplify their sound, but “powered” does not mean they connect to every source. Check the source’s output and the speaker’s inputs. Receiver output options vary by model: Sony’s support article says its analog output guidance for active speakers or soundbars applies only to the STR-DH190 among the products covered. Do not assume another receiver has the same output. See Sony’s model-specific guidance, last modified January 19, 2026.

How to check amplifier and speaker compatibility
Before connecting passive speakers, consult the specifications for both the amplifier and speakers. The amplifier must support the speakers’ impedance, and its output must be appropriate for the setup. Lower impedance places a greater load on an amplifier; an unsupported low-impedance speaker can create an unsafe operating condition. Yamaha’s amplifier guide covers output and impedance matching. Follow the recommendations for your exact equipment rather than treating one manufacturer’s supported range or a single wattage formula as universal.

- Identify whether each speaker is passive or powered.
- For passive speakers, verify the amplifier’s supported impedance and output against the speaker specifications.
- Confirm the amplifier has inputs for your audio sources and the outputs your speakers require.
- For powered speakers, check both devices’ connection types and whether the source provides a suitable output.
- For a passive subwoofer, verify that the chosen amplifier or receiver can actually power it.
Common connection assumptions to avoid
- “Every speaker needs a receiver.” Passive speakers need external amplification, but that can come from a dedicated amplifier. Powered speakers already contain amplification.
- “Powered speakers can plug into any receiver.” Compatibility depends on the receiver’s output and the speaker’s inputs; output options differ by model.
- “A subwoofer output powers every subwoofer.” Confirm support for the exact subwoofer. A line-level output is not proof that a receiver can power a passive subwoofer.
- “A published impedance range applies to all receivers.” Manufacturer guidance is equipment-specific. Check the specifications for the model you own.
