If your wired connection is slower than expected, an Ethernet cable could be the bottleneck—but the title’s diagnosis cannot be confirmed without checking your link rate, ports, plan and cable. First look at the negotiated Ethernet speed between your device and router or switch. If that rate is below what both devices should support, inspect the ports and cable before changing your internet plan.
Check the Ethernet link before changing plans
Ethernet devices automatically negotiate a link rate they can both support. A damaged or out-of-spec cabling channel can keep the link from reaching its highest rate, but a low link rate does not prove the cable is at fault: a slower port, device setting, connector or network device can also be the limit. The NBASE-T Alliance describes this automatic negotiation in its 2017 downshift white paper.
- Check the negotiated Ethernet link rate shown by your computer or network device. The exact location varies by operating system and device.
- Check the Ethernet port capabilities on both ends of the cable, including the router or switch and the computer or other endpoint. The link cannot exceed the slower endpoint’s supported rate.
- Inspect the cable and connectors for damage, loose connections or a low category rating. For an installed run, its printed category alone does not establish that it meets a particular performance target.
- Run a speed test over the wired connection and compare the result with your internet plan, accounting for the link rate and the capabilities of the rest of the network.
A negotiated rate of 100 Mb/s when the connected ports are expected to support gigabit or faster is a reason to check the cable, connectors, ports and device settings. It is not, by itself, proof that replacing the cable will solve the problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat Ethernet cable category do you need?
Choose for the Ethernet rate you want, the run length and installation conditions, and the capabilities of both endpoint ports. The figures below are guidance for compliant channels, not a guarantee for every existing installation.

| Category | Supported-rate guidance | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Cat 5e | 1 Gb/s to 100 m; 2.5 Gb/s is defined for compliant Cat 5e channels. | Cat 5e is not automatically inadequate for gigabit. IEEE 802.3bz also defines 2.5 Gb/s operation over compliant Cat 5e channels. CommScope’s comparison lists the 1 Gb/s distance; the NBASE-T Alliance white paper describes 2.5 Gb/s over compliant cabling. |
| Cat 6 | 1 Gb/s to 100 m; 2.5/5 Gb/s can work under the relevant channel conditions. 10 Gb/s is limited to shorter or qualified runs. | The Ethernet Alliance’s 2012 guidance gives a 55 m to 100 m range for 10GBASE-T over Cat 6, subject to channel qualifications. Do not assume every Cat 6 run supports 10 Gb/s at that distance. Ethernet Alliance; Fluke Networks. |
| Cat 6A | 10 Gb/s to 100 m. | A straightforward choice for 10GBASE-T across a standard 100 m channel when both devices support 10 Gb/s. It is often unnecessary for ordinary gigabit internet. Ethernet Alliance (2012); CommScope. |
The NBASE-T Alliance’s 2017 guidance describes 2.5 Gb/s and 5 Gb/s operation over Category 5e or Category 6 (or better) structured cabling when the channel meets the link-segment specifications. Fluke Networks explains that testing can qualify some installed Cat 5e or Cat 6 runs for 2.5/5 Gb/s to 100 m; a basic continuity check does not establish that a run meets a target data rate. See Fluke Networks’ guidance on existing cable plants.
When replacing a cable can help—and when it cannot
Consider replacing or qualifying the run
- The cable or connector is visibly damaged or unreliable.
- The link negotiates below the rate supported by both ports, and checks of the ports and device settings do not explain the limit.
- You need 10 Gb/s over a 100 m channel and the installed cabling is not suitable; Cat 6A is the category supported for that distance in the cited guidance.
- You have a fixed in-wall or bundled run whose performance matters. Use a qualification test appropriate to the target rate rather than relying on a continuity result or the printed category alone.
Keep the existing cable if it already meets the need
An intact Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable can support many gigabit connections, and compliant runs may support 2.5 or 5 Gb/s under the relevant channel conditions. Replacing one solely because it is not Cat 6A may make no difference to internet performance. A cable upgrade also cannot raise the rate beyond the slowest port, router, endpoint or internet service plan.

Separate an Ethernet limit from an internet-plan limit
The negotiated link rate describes the connection between two Ethernet devices; a wired speed test measures the end-to-end result through the network and internet service. If the link rate is already appropriate for your devices but the test remains below your subscribed plan, the cable category alone does not establish the cause. Check the plan, network equipment and endpoint capabilities before paying for a faster service or buying a different cable.
