Usually, no: a USB hub’s protocol relay delay is tiny, and it is not normally the main cause of noticeable mouse or keyboard lag. But “lag” can mean several different things. Slow file transfers, stuttering, missed input, and disconnects point to different possible problems, so identify the symptom before changing hardware.

How much input lag does a USB hub add?

A hub relays data between the computer and connected devices, which affects USB packet timing. In a USB-IF compliance calculation for a host response to a device behind one tier of hubs, the maximum interpacket delay is 610 nanoseconds (ns), or 292 bit times, under the calculation’s stated USB 2.0 high-speed assumptions. USB-IF explains that “the interpacket gap timing is affected when transmitting after receiving a packet” because the embedded hub must relay the host’s data. Read USB-IF’s compliance update.

That 610 ns figure is a protocol timing bound for a specific case, not a benchmark of a mouse or keyboard and not the complete time from a keypress or movement to an on-screen response. That full path also involves the device, host, software, application, and display. The official sources cited here do not establish a controlled, real-world comparison of end-to-end input lag through a hub versus a direct connection.

Does the symptom point to input lag, speed, or stability?

Delayed mouse or keyboard response

If pointer movement or keystrokes feel delayed, compare the same device and workload with it connected directly to the computer. A hub’s relay timing alone is not enough to explain every user-visible delay, and a direct-versus-hub comparison can help isolate whether the hub or its connection is involved.

Slow file transfers

Check the speed capability of every link: the computer’s port, hub, upstream cable, and device. Microsoft says that a SuperSpeed device connected through a USB 2.0 hub operates at high speed. In other words, a fast storage device cannot retain its SuperSpeed connection through that slower hub. See Microsoft’s USB in Windows FAQ.

USB-IF lists USB 3.2 transfer rates of 5, 10, and 20 Gbps; its specification supports up to two 10 Gbps lanes for 20 Gbps operation. USB-IF also says backward-compatible products operate at the lowest common speed capability. These are USB speed categories, not a promise of the application-level transfer rate a particular device will achieve. See USB-IF’s USB 3.2 information.

  • UH720 supports hot-swap USB ports that can be safely connected and disconnected while the computer is on and running.

Stuttering, missed events, or disconnects

Intermittent problems can indicate an unstable connection or a power issue rather than ordinary input delay. USB-IF warns that excessive inrush current can lower VBus voltage enough to disconnect adjacent devices, and that bus-powered hubs are especially susceptible to brownout. This makes power instability a possibility to investigate; it does not establish that power is the cause of any particular dropout. Read USB-IF’s power overview.

How to troubleshoot a USB hub problem

  1. Describe what is happening. Note whether the problem is delayed input, slow transfers, intermittent stutter, missed events, or disconnection.
  2. Compare with a direct connection. Connect the affected device to the computer instead of the hub, then compare it under the same workload. Change one connection at a time so you can tell which change affects the symptom.
  3. For slow SuperSpeed storage, check the whole connection path. Confirm the host port, hub, cable, and device all support the speed you need. A USB 2.0 hub will make an attached SuperSpeed device operate at high speed, according to Microsoft.
  4. For dropouts, check power and connected-device load. Try reducing the number of devices on the hub. If power is a plausible cause, compare with a suitable externally powered hub; external power addresses a possible power limitation, not input latency in general.
  5. For a speed problem that persists, check compatibility and manufacturer guidance. Microsoft’s troubleshooting material identifies cable capability or signal integrity, hub, device and host-controller firmware, and BIOS routing as possible factors. Its page includes legacy Windows examples, so follow current instructions from the relevant computer, hub, and device manufacturers before updating firmware or BIOS.

What to look for if you need a different hub

Choose a hub for the problem you have identified. A higher advertised data rate does not, by itself, show that a hub will reduce mouse or keyboard lag.

What to check Why it matters
Supported data rate The host, hub, cable, and device must all support the target speed; compatible USB operation falls to the lowest common speed capability, according to USB-IF.
External power Consider it when connected devices may exceed reliable bus-powered use or when power-related dropouts are plausible. It is not a general latency treatment.
Connector and host compatibility Check the upstream connector, port speed, cable, and operating-system and device support. A USB 2.0 hub limits an attached SuperSpeed device to high speed, according to Microsoft.
Port count and device mix Match the hub to the devices you actually need to connect; more ports do not guarantee a faster connection.
