Some USB-C cables contain a small identification component called an e-marker; that is not a general-purpose computer or proof of a malicious implant. Purpose-built cables with hidden active electronics are a separate, specialist category. The practical takeaway: choose a cable for its stated power and data capabilities, and avoid connecting your phone to USB computers or charging stations you do not control.
What does a chip in a USB-C cable actually do?
An e-marker is a component in certain USB-C cables that reports cable identity or capabilities when queried through USB Power Delivery. It helps connected equipment determine what the cable supports. That ordinary identification role is different from a computer capable of running arbitrary code, and an e-marker alone is not evidence of tampering.
Which cables require one depends on the cable type and capability. USB-IF compliance updates say Gen 1 USB Type-C-to-USB-C cables must use an e-marker; that requirement took effect in January 2017. The requirement does not mean every USB-C cable has one. A USB Type-C cable specification also describes electronic marking for USB 2.0 Type-C cable assemblies rated above 3A. USB-IF compliance updates and its USB Type-C Cable and Connector Specification, Release 2.4 provide the relevant compliance and technical context.
Can a USB-C cable contain a malicious implant?
Yes, purpose-built implanted cables exist, but they are not the same thing as ordinary e-marked cables. O.MG describes its products as implanted tools for red-team testing. Its product descriptions include keystroke injection and Wi-Fi controls on a Basic model, with additional capabilities on higher-tier devices. These are manufacturer-described features of specialist tools—not evidence that malicious implants are common in everyday cables. The available information does not establish their prevalence in ordinary commerce.
#1 Best Overall
- Durable Design: Reinforced nylon exterior and a robust core ensure this cable withstands up to 5,000 bends, outlasting other brands
- Fast Charging: Supports Power Delivery for up to 60W high-speed charging when paired with a USB-C charger
- Versatile Compatibility: Works with virtually all USB-C devices, including phones, tablets, and laptops
- High-Speed Data Transfer: Transfer files quickly with 480Mbps data transfer speeds
- Included Accessories: Comes with a hook-and-loop cable tie for easy organization and a welcome guide for hassle-free setup
For one product-specific example, O.MG’s setup information lists 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi at 2.4 GHz, maximum 5 V pass-through charging, and 480 Mbps USB pass-through data. Those figures describe that product, not USB-C cables generally. See the manufacturer’s O.MG site and cable setup information.
Can a USB-C cable steal data from your phone?
A cable is only one part of a USB connection: the connected computer or charging equipment can matter too. CISA warns that connecting a mobile device to a computer over USB can allow software on that computer to interact with the phone in ways the user may not expect. The risk is therefore not limited to an exotic cable implant; connecting to equipment you do not control can create unwanted interactions.

- CONFIRM BEFORE BUYING — USB-C to USB-C ONLY: This iPhone 18 Charging cable connects two USB-C ports — it does NOT include a USB-A connector. Not a retractable coil cable. Not a magnetic self-winding cable. Features a tangle-free, ultra-flexible design for everyday 240W fast charging. If you experience any quality issues upon arrival, our customer support team is available 24/7 to assist with a prompt and professional solution
- High Power ≠ High Risk | Smarter Compatibility for Every Device: 240W doesn't mean compromising safety—it means unmatched versatility. Thanks to PD3.1 Extended Power Range (EPR) technology, our c to c cable fast charging dynamically adjusts voltage/current to deliver each device's maximum safe power (e.g., 60W to iPads, 100W to older MacBooks, 140W to MacBook Pro). Other 60W/100W usb c to usb c cable can't hit full charging speed for your power-hungry devices—they're held back by their own power limits. LISEN 240W usb-c charge cable? It charges all your gear steadily, efficiently, and at full speed, with zero safety risks
- 240W Ultra Fast Charging | Smart Protocol Matching: This iPhone 18 pro max charger fast charging cable supports PD3.1 EPR/QC4.0 fast charging up to 240W Max, working seamlessly with USB-C Power Delivery adapters (e.g.60W/100W/240W). It automatically matches your device’s handshake protocol to deliver the maximum safe power it can handle. It's 2.4X faster than 100W fast charging usb-c cables: Up to 85% charged in 30 mins for iPhone 18 Pro Max, up to 65% charged in 30 mins for iPad Pro, and up to 80% charged in 30 mins for MacBook Pro 16''(M5). This iPhone 18 charger cord balances speed and protection perfectly, giving you both fast and secure charging
- E-Marker 3.0 Chip | Real-Time Current/Voltage Monitoring: LISEN 240W type c charger fast charging cable has an E-Marker 3.0 + PD3.1 EPR system that actively monitors current/voltage 3.2M+ times per second, ensuring zero overloads, short circuits, or battery damage. Paired with dual safeguards (overheat + surge protection) and PD3.1/QC4.0 certifications, it's not just a USB-C to USB-C cable—it's a smart guardian for your devices
- Premium Copper Core | Conductivity Meets Durability: This high speed usb c cable fast charging is upgraded from standard copper to 99.99% oxygen-free copper cores—thicker, purer, and lower-resistance. This means: (1) Stable power delivery even at 240W (no energy loss or heat buildup). (2) Longer lifespan (resists corrosion and wear, unlike cheaper alloys). (3) Faster data sync (480Mbps) with minimal signal interference
That possibility should not be confused with proof of widespread public “juice jacking.” In a 2023 discussion, CISA said the reports it considered did not cite evidence and that the FCC was not aware of confirmed cases at that time. This is a dated account of what those agencies said then, not proof that such attacks are impossible or a current incident count. Read CISA’s discussion of secure-by-design thinking and reported events.

Match the cable to the device and use case rather than assuming all USB-C cables support the same charging speed or data rate. USB-IF notes that cable capabilities vary and recommends choosing certified cables suited to the USB environment.

- Fit: Choose the connector arrangement and length that suit your setup.
- Compliance: USB-IF certification or listing can be a useful signal about compliance and capability. It is not a guarantee that a cable is free of a malicious hardware implant.
USB-IF’s cables and connectors information explains its certification and capability guidance. Certification helps with cable selection; it should not be treated as a security screening result.

- Prefer your own charger and a wall outlet. This avoids connecting your phone to a shared USB computer or charging station.
- If you must use USB, choose equipment you control. CISA’s practical advice is to avoid connecting a personal device to a computer or charging station outside your control. Its February 1, 2021 guidance for travelers explains that a USB connection can let software on a computer interact with a phone.
- Consider a data blocker or charge-only adapter. These accessories are intended to avoid a data connection while charging. They are an optional precaution, not a guarantee that a device or charging setup is safe.
For professional security testing, O.MG lists a malicious-cable detector that the manufacturer says also functions as a USB data blocker. Its detection coverage has not been independently established here, so do not assume a detector will identify every implanted cable.
