Not necessarily. A thinner phone has less physical room for a battery, but thickness alone cannot tell you how long it will last. Before buying, compare independent battery tests that match your likely use, then check capacity, charging details and whether you are willing to carry an external battery.
Why thinness does not predict battery life
Chassis thickness can constrain the space available for a battery, but runtime also depends on battery chemistry, internal layout, display and processor power use, software, connectivity and workload. A capacity figure in mAh is useful context, not a cross-model endurance score: it does not by itself show how efficiently a phone uses its stored energy.
For example, Samsung lists the 5.8 mm Galaxy S25 Edge with a 3,900 mAh typical battery capacity and a 3,786 mAh rated minimum. Motorola’s UK product page lists the 5.9 mm edge 70 with a 4,800 mAh silicon-carbon battery. These specifications show different engineering approaches; they do not establish which phone lasts longer in the same person’s day. Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge specifications; Motorola edge 70 specifications (UK).
Compare battery tests that resemble your use
Look for tests that disclose the workload, brightness and network conditions, and compare candidate phones tested under the same protocol. A continuous cellular-browsing test is more relevant to heavy browsing than a local-video playback estimate; neither alone predicts every mixed-use day.

In Tom’s Guide’s 2025 continuous web-browsing test over 5G at 150 nits, the iPhone Air lasted 12 hours 2 minutes and the Galaxy S25 Edge lasted 11 hours 48 minutes. That 14-minute difference applies to that particular procedure, not all users, carriers or software versions. In a separate five-hour video-streaming test, Tom’s Guide reported 81% remaining for iPhone Air and 67% for Galaxy S25 Edge. Do not combine the results: they measure different tasks. Tom’s Guide’s iPhone Air vs. Galaxy S25 Edge battery tests.
Match the test to your routine
- Cellular browsing: Check whether the test used Wi-Fi or a mobile network, and note the network generation and signal conditions if given.
- Video: Distinguish local playback from streaming; streaming adds network activity.
- Navigation, gaming and camera use: Seek tests that actually include those workloads if they dominate your day. Results from browsing or video cannot stand in for them.
- Travel or weak-signal areas: Treat a test in stable conditions cautiously; connectivity demands can differ in poor reception.
Read manufacturer battery claims as task-specific figures
Apple lists the iPhone Air at up to 27 hours of local video playback and up to 22 hours of streamed video playback. These are manufacturer estimates for defined playback tasks, not a promise of the same duration in mixed daily use. They are also not directly comparable to Tom’s Guide’s continuous 5G browsing result. Apple iPhone Air technical specifications.

Check capacity, charging and accessories
Capacity and chemistry help explain a design, but use comparable runtime tests to judge endurance. Also check how quickly each phone can recharge and what equipment that claim requires.

| Phone | Listed battery details | Charging information | Evidence type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Galaxy S25 Edge | 3,900 mAh typical; 3,786 mAh rated minimum; 5.8 mm thick | Samsung says around 55% in 30 minutes with a 25 W adapter, sold separately | Samsung specifications; typical capacity is based on IEC 61960 sample testing, and actual life varies with network and usage |
| iPhone Air | Apple lists up to 27 hours local video playback and up to 22 hours streamed video playback | Apple says up to 50% in 30 minutes with a separately available 20 W-or-higher adapter and USB-C charging cable | Apple manufacturer specifications |
| Motorola edge 70 | 4,800 mAh silicon-carbon battery; 5.9 mm thick | 68 W charging listed by Motorola | Motorola UK product-page specifications; not a runtime result under Tom’s Guide’s test protocol |
Charging claims are conditional on the named power adapter and cable. Confirm the specification and included accessories for the exact model and region you intend to buy; the cited Samsung and Apple fast-charging setups require separately sold adapters.
Decide whether carrying a battery is worth it
An external battery can extend runtime, but carrying one changes the day-to-day experience of a thin, light phone. For iPhone Air specifically, Apple lists up to 40 hours of local video playback and up to 35 hours of streamed video playback with its model-specific MagSafe Battery, compared with up to 27 and 22 hours respectively without it. These remain Apple playback estimates and apply to that named accessory and phone, not to other handsets. Apple iPhone Air technical specifications.

A practical checklist before you buy
- Find independent battery tests for the exact phones you are considering, preferably from the same reviewer and test run.
- Check each test’s workload, brightness, network and signal conditions; choose one close to how you use your phone.
- Use mAh and battery chemistry as supporting specifications, not as a substitute for comparable runtime results.
- Check charging speed, required adapter and cable, and whether those accessories come in the box for your region.
- If you expect frequent top-ups, decide whether the phone’s compatible external battery is practical to carry and whether it offsets the portability you wanted.
The cited Tom’s Guide results are from 2025 and are not a universal benchmark or guarantee across carriers, software versions, signal conditions or users. Manufacturer playback and charging figures describe their stated scenarios, while Motorola’s listed specifications come from its UK page and are not a directly tested endurance comparison.
