Yes. Open-ear earbuds can leak sound, especially at high volume in a quiet place, and how much others hear depends on the earbuds’ design and fit, your volume, and their distance from you. They can let some ambient sound reach your ears, but that does not guarantee you will hear traffic or other hazards. Use them outdoors only with your attention on your surroundings, and keep listening volume and duration in check.

Can people nearby hear open-ear earbuds?

They can. Open-ear earbuds do not seal the ear canal, so some playback sound can travel outward. Whether someone else notices it depends on volume, how the earbuds sit, the room’s quietness, and the listener’s distance. There is no universal leakage figure established across models by the sources cited here.

Bose says its Ultra Open Earbuds direct sound toward the ear and are designed to minimize leakage. The company says nearby people generally will not hear audio at typical volumes, though it may be noticeable at very high volumes in very quiet surroundings. That is a manufacturer claim, not an independent comparative measurement. Bose’s product information describes its approach.

Soundcore likewise says leakage is inherent to open-sound designs: people nearby may hear audio at high volumes, and are less likely to hear it at normal volumes. This is manufacturer guidance, not a standardized test result. Soundcore’s support article explains its position.

Shokz says its DirectPitch technology directs sound toward the ear and uses reverse sound waves to reduce leakage. Treat that as the company’s description of its technology, not independent proof that its products are leak-proof. Shokz’s technology page provides its explanation.

Are open-ear earbuds safe to wear outdoors?

They may let more ambient sound reach you than sealed earbuds, which can be useful on a walk or run. But hearing some surroundings is not the same as reliably detecting a car, cyclist, or warning sound in time. Traffic noise, wind, your listening level, the earbuds’ fit, your route, and your attention can all affect what you notice. The Independent’s 2025 open-ear headphone guide notes that loud environments can overwhelm open designs.

For pedestrian safety, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration advises: “Stop, look and listen. Stay alert when you’re walking—use your eyes and ears to stay safe.” It also advises looking left-right-left when crossing. Open-ear earbuds do not replace those precautions. Follow NHTSA’s pedestrian safety guidance, and do not assume that an open design makes every outdoor setting safe.

Does open-ear design protect your hearing?

No. The relevant exposure is the sound reaching your ears over time; leaving the ear canal open does not make excessive volume or long listening sessions harmless. The World Health Organization recommends keeping device volume below 60% of maximum, monitoring exposure, and limiting time spent listening loudly. The percentage is a device setting, not a sound-level measurement, and the same setting can correspond to different levels on different devices.

WHO gives 80 dB for up to 40 hours per week as an example, and 90 dB for four hours per week. These examples illustrate how permissible listening time falls as sound level rises; they are not guarantees that a particular device’s volume setting is safe. What to check when choosing open-ear earbuds

Compare evidence that describes the conditions, not just a claim that a model “minimizes” leakage. Manufacturer statements can explain a product’s design, but they do not establish that nobody nearby will hear it or that you will hear every outdoor hazard.

  • Leakage: Look for measurements that state playback level and distance, and distinguish independent tests from manufacturer claims.
  • Ambient awareness: Consider the place and activity where you will use them; an open design cannot guarantee awareness in loud or distracting surroundings.
  • Fit and stability: Check whether the earbuds stay comfortably in place for your intended activity.
  • Comfort and compatibility: Consider your ear shape and, where relevant, whether the design works comfortably with glasses.
  • Sweat or water resistance: Verify the exact model’s official specification rather than assuming all open-ear earbuds have the same protection.
