Nvidia says RTX Spark laptop performance should be roughly the same on battery as when plugged in. One reported test of an engineering-prototype Surface Laptop Ultra found identical GPU performance in both conditions, but that is a single preproduction result—not proof that every retail RTX Spark laptop will behave the same across games, creative apps, and AI workloads.
What Nvidia says about unplugged performance
In a report on an RTX Spark laptop demonstration, TechRadar said Nvidia assured its writer that performance would be roughly the same whether the laptop was plugged into a charger or running on battery. TechRadar did not publish raw performance figures from the demonstration, and its writer was not allowed to run benchmarks or change settings. The claim is therefore Nvidia’s reported expectation, not an independently verified result from that event. TechRadar’s report on the demonstration
That distinction matters: a laptop can appear to perform similarly during a short demo without establishing that it sustains the same speed over a longer session or in other applications. Nvidia’s statement is a useful expectation to check, not a substitute for model-specific measurements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat the reported prototype test found
The clearest direct comparison in published coverage concerns one engineering-prototype Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra. Hardware Busters reported that its tester found GPU performance identical on battery and wall power. The report does not provide a cross-model statistic or establish that the outcome applies to retail laptops. Hardware Busters’ prototype report

The preproduction status is an important qualification. The test used developer drivers, and Tom’s Hardware described erratic power management, buggy software, failed CUDA tests, and other limitations. Those issues make the observation interesting, but they also make it a poor basis for predicting the behavior of finished systems. Tom’s Hardware’s coverage of the prototype
Why a demonstration is not a broad performance verdict
Tom’s Guide reported seeing RTX Spark laptops run games and creative software, but Nvidia did not show FPS figures and the writer could not determine how emulation affected performance or battery life. That hands-on report offers context about demonstrations, not a controlled comparison of the same laptop and workload on battery and AC power. Tom’s Guide’s hands-on report

RTX Spark is a platform, not one laptop configuration. Nvidia lists partner systems including the ASUS ProArt P16, Dell XPS 16, HP OmniBook Ultra 16, Lenovo Pro 9n, Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra, and MSI Prestige N16 Flip AI. Different models and configurations can have different cooling, firmware, drivers, and power policies, so a result from one system should not be generalized to the whole lineup. How to judge a plugged-in versus battery comparison
A useful comparison needs to identify the exact laptop and configuration, then hold the workload and test conditions constant. Look for the following details before treating a result as evidence of parity:

- Model and configuration: the manufacturer, specific RTX Spark laptop, and relevant hardware configuration.
- Workload: the application, game, or benchmark used, with the same settings in both runs.
- Software: driver and system software versions, especially whether the test uses preproduction or developer software.
- Power state: whether the laptop is on battery or connected to AC power, and which power mode is selected.
- What was measured: GPU performance alone or whole-system performance, with the actual results reported rather than a qualitative impression.
- Duration: whether the test was brief or long enough to show sustained performance.
Battery runtime is a separate measurement. A laptop could maintain similar performance while unplugged yet use its battery quickly; a performance comparison alone does not establish how long it will run.

Nvidia’s stated expectation of roughly equal performance has one encouraging reported counterpart: a single engineering-prototype test found identical GPU performance on battery and wall power. But the demonstration lacked independent benchmark figures, and the prototype result came from a system with preproduction software and reported power-management problems. The available evidence does not establish equal performance across retail RTX Spark laptops or across all workloads.
