Macs can get malware, but that does not mean every Mac user needs to buy antivirus software. macOS already includes several layers of protection, including Apple’s built-in XProtect antivirus technology and Gatekeeper checks for downloaded apps. Keeping your Mac updated, choosing trustworthy software sources, and treating unexpected links and prompts cautiously are important parts of staying safe.
Can Macs get malware?
Yes. Macs are not immune to malware, and unsafe downloads, deceptive links, and fake update prompts can put users at risk. Apple’s security documentation explains how macOS defenses work; it does not establish how common Mac infections are. There is no reliable prevalence figure in the sources cited here, so claims that quantify the likelihood of infection should be treated cautiously.
What security protection is built into macOS?
XProtect detects and removes known malware
Apple describes XProtect as “built-in antivirus technology” that uses signatures to detect and remove malware. Apple also organizes macOS malware defenses into layers: preventing malware from running, blocking it, and remediating malware that has run. These protections are part of macOS rather than a separate antivirus purchase. Apple’s malware protection documentation explains the system’s role and limits.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesGatekeeper checks downloaded apps
When you open software downloaded from outside the App Store, Gatekeeper checks whether it comes from an identified developer, is notarized by Apple, and shows evidence of not having been altered. Notarization is Apple’s automated check for known malicious content; it is not a guarantee that software is risk-free. Apple also allows users to override Gatekeeper policies, so bypassing a warning can remove an important safeguard. See Apple Platform Security for details.

- THREAT DETECTION – Stay one step ahead. Suspicious links, risky sites, viruses, and scams, caught automatically before they reach you.
- PERSONAL INFO PROTECTION – Keep your personal info safer. Identity monitoring watches for your exposed info and tells you what to do about it.
- SECURE CONNECTIONS – Just a few easy clicks, and we'll automatically protect your info on public Wi‑Fi, every time you connect.
- GUIDED ACTION – Know what matters and what to do next. Clear alerts and simple guidance make it easy to take action.
- MORE THAN ANTIVIRUS – Scam protection, identity monitoring, VPN, web protection, and antivirus work together to protect you, all in one place.
How independent guidance characterizes these defenses
The UK National Cyber Security Centre describes XProtect as reasonably effective at preventing malware on macOS, while noting that some users may still want third-party products. Its platform guidance was last tested on macOS 14.6 and 15.5 in June 2025, and the NCSC says it does not apply to one specific macOS version. Read its macOS device security guidance.
What should Mac users do to reduce risk?
- Keep macOS current. Install available system updates so your Mac receives Apple’s security fixes and protections.
- Use trustworthy software sources. Prefer the App Store or the developer’s official site, and take Gatekeeper warnings seriously rather than overriding them automatically.
- Pause before clicking or installing. Be cautious with unexpected links, attachments, installer prompts, and messages claiming that an update or security tool is urgently required. Phishing, fake updates, and malicious downloads remain relevant risks.
- Question alarming infection warnings. A browser pop-up or unsolicited message saying “your Mac is infected” is not proof of an infection. Avoid calling numbers, installing cleanup software, or paying in response to a scare alert.
Apple Developer guidance warns about deceptive software behavior, including false infection warnings and misleading protection claims. If an alert seems suspicious, close the page or app without following its instructions and seek help through a trusted Apple or software-provider support channel. Apple’s guidance on deceptive software outlines the kinds of claims to watch for.

Do you need to install third-party antivirus?
For many ordinary users, third-party antivirus is optional rather than a universal requirement. Macworld’s Aug. 28, 2026 explainer says Apple’s built-in protections may be sufficient for users who keep macOS current, install apps from trusted sources, and use care with links, attachments, and unexpected prompts. That is a practical rule of thumb, not a guarantee against every threat.

The practical answer
macOS includes meaningful built-in malware defenses, and Mac users should not assume they are invulnerable—or assume they must buy antivirus. Keep the system updated, get apps from sources you trust, avoid casually overriding security warnings, and treat unexpected alerts and prompts with skepticism. Consider extra protection only when it meets a specific need.
