Usually, no. Most modern Gundam plastic kits use snap-fit joints and colored plastic, so you can build a complete model without liquid cement, paint, or even nippers. Bandai’s ENTRY GRADE 1/144 RX-78-2 Gundam manual labels that specific kit “No glue required,” “No paint required,” and “No tools required.” Those labels apply to that kit, not automatically to every Gunpla release. Always check the manual for the exact model you bought.
What “no glue” and “no paint” actually mean
Gundam kits are commonly sold as unassembled plastic parts attached to runners. Instead of relying on adhesive, many kits use molded pegs, sockets, hinges, and tabs that lock together when pressed. Bandai’s general Gunpla guide describes this as parts that can be assembled by snapping them together without adhesives. A completed model can therefore be structurally sound while remaining completely unglued.
Color is handled in a similar way. With iropla, different plastic colors are molded into the runners, so the assembled robot already has its major color blocks. You do not have to prime and paint the armor simply to make it resemble the box art. Paint is a finishing choice for builders who want sharper color separation, weathering, a custom scheme, or a more realistic surface.
These technologies vary by Gunpla type. “Gundam” is a broad product family, and one manual cannot establish the requirements for every grade, scale, reissue, or special release. Treat the ENTRY GRADE wording as a documented example and use your own kit’s instructions as the authority.

What the official manuals show
| Feature | ENTRY GRADE 1/144 RX-78-2 example | MG RX-78-2 Ver.2.0 example | Beginner implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Part connection | Manual labels the snap-fit design “No glue required.” | Manual includes adhesive guidance and a glue-application symbol. | Do not assume every kit is adhesive-free; look for an explicit glue step or symbol. |
| Color | Manual labels the color-molded design “No paint required.” | Manual discusses paint as part of its tool and safety information. | Paint can be optional even when a manual explains how to use it. |
| Part removal | Touch-gate construction is labeled “No tools required.” | Manual instructs the builder to use nippers. | A touch-gate kit may be built by hand; other kits may need side cutters. |
| Finishing | Decals and detail work are optional after assembly. | Manual covers more tools, paint, and adhesive considerations. | Finishing steps depend on the kit and your preferred level of detail. |
| Safety and age | The cited manual indicates ages 8 and up. | Manual gives handling cautions for tools, paint, and adhesives. | Follow the age label and safety notes printed for your specific release. |
The MG example does not prove that glue or paint is always mandatory. It proves that some kits are documented with a more involved tool and finishing process. Conversely, the ENTRY GRADE example does not prove that every Entry Grade, every 1/144 kit, or every future release has identical construction.
Can you build a Gundam kit with no supplies?
For a touch-gate, snap-fit kit such as the cited ENTRY GRADE RX-78-2 example, you can start with the box and its manual. Parts are designed to separate from the runner without conventional nippers, and the joints are designed to press together. Work slowly: twisting or bending a part can still stress thin plastic even when a tool is not required.
“No tools required” does not mean tools are useless. Bandai’s general guidance calls diagonal pliers a useful tool, and nippers give you cleaner, more controlled cuts on ordinary gates. A pair of tweezers can make small decal placement easier. These are convenience and quality-of-finish choices rather than universal prerequisites.
- Minimum for a touch-gate kit: the kit, its manual, a clean work surface, and adequate lighting.
- Useful upgrade: plastic-model nippers or side cutters for cleaner gate removal.
- Useful for finishing: tweezers for small decals and a Gundam Marker or inking pen for panel lines.
- Only when specified: hobby adhesive, paint, primer, or specialty tools called out by the manual.
How to tell whether your exact kit needs glue
- Open the manual before cutting parts. Find the tools, materials, and safety pages. Do not rely only on the grade name or box artwork.
- Look for connection symbols. A snap-fit diagram shows parts being pressed together. A glue or adhesive symbol, a bottle icon, or written adhesive instruction indicates that at least one assembly step may call for it.
- Check every construction section. Some kits are mostly snap-fit but use adhesive for a specific seam, clear part, cable, or optional configuration. The requirement may be local rather than model-wide.
- Separate “recommended” from “required.” A manual may discuss adhesive as an option for strengthening or finishing without making it necessary to complete the build.
- Follow the warnings for the exact edition. Reissues and regional packaging can have different instructions, part layouts, or safety labels.
If the manual never calls for adhesive and the parts are designed to lock together, assemble a test section dry. The fit should be firm without forcing it. Stop if a peg does not align; forcing a joint can split a socket or whiten the plastic.

How to tell whether paint is necessary
Look at the runners and the manual’s color information. Multicolor molding means the major armor colors are supplied in plastic. A model can still have small color inaccuracies, exposed joints, seam lines, or shallow details, but those are reasons to customize, not proof that paint is required.
Paint becomes functionally necessary only when the instructions identify an uncolored part that must be painted for the intended appearance, or when you are reproducing a scheme not supplied by the plastic. Even then, the model remains physically assemblable without paint; it simply will not match the illustrated finish.
- Build straight from the box: assemble the molded colors and use the supplied stickers or decals.
- Add detail without a full paint job: use a Gundam Marker or another panel-line pen after assembly, as described in Bandai’s guide.
- Change the colors: disassemble where practical, prepare the plastic, and use a paint system compatible with plastic and the manual’s safety advice.
- Create a weathered finish: paint, washes, dry brushing, or topcoat are optional stages that require additional ventilation, curing time, and handling care.
A beginner workflow that avoids common mistakes
1. Inventory the box
Compare the runners, stickers, decals, and manual with the contents list. If something is missing or damaged, resolve that before beginning. Keep runners labeled; the part code in the manual is your reference when several pieces look similar.
2. Read the symbols and warnings
Identify the manual’s symbols for nippers, adhesive, paint, decals, and special handling. The MG RX-78-2 Ver.2.0 manual, for example, discusses tools, paint, adhesives, and safe handling. The ENTRY GRADE manual’s “No glue required,” “No paint required,” and “No tools required” labels describe a different construction approach.

3. Remove parts as instructed
Follow the numbered sequence and verify the part letter and number before separating anything. On a touch-gate kit, ease a part out rather than sharply twisting it. On a conventional runner, use nippers if the manual specifies them; leave a small nub first and trim it closer in a second cut.
4. Assemble one section at a time
Build in the manual’s order so that internal frames, polycaps, and armor do not have to be forced apart later. Check orientation arrows and mirrored left/right parts. If a joint feels unusually tight, disassemble and inspect for a reversed piece or leftover gate.
5. Decide on finishing after the structure is complete
For a clean unpainted build, assemble first, then decide whether panel lines or decals add value. This prevents optional finishing from slowing the basic construction and lets you see which details are actually visible.
6. Apply decals carefully
Bandai’s guidance identifies tweezers as helpful for small decals. Handle the marking by its edge, place it on a clean surface, and press it down gently. Decals are finishing work; they are not evidence that glue or paint is required.

When glue is useful even if the kit is snap-fit
Builders sometimes use plastic cement to reduce a visible seam, secure a loose connection, or make a permanently posed display piece. Those are customization decisions, not automatic assembly requirements. Cement can weld plastic, so applying it to a moving joint or a clear part can damage the part or freeze the mechanism. Test your technique on spare runner material and apply only where the manual and your project justify it.
Do not substitute household superglue casually. Different adhesives behave differently on styrene, ABS, polycaps, painted surfaces, and clear plastic. If a manual specifies an adhesive, use the product type and application method it indicates, and protect ventilation and skin as directed on the adhesive label.

Painting is most useful when your goal is beyond a straight build: correcting small color details, hiding seam work, matching a custom unit, or creating a weathered finish. It also adds preparation steps that a first-time builder may not expect: parts must be cleaned, paint must cure between coats, and moving surfaces need clearance so layers do not rub.

Common beginner problems and fixes
A part will not fit
Stop pushing. Recheck the part number, orientation, and any polycap or internal frame hidden behind the armor. A remaining runner nub can prevent a flush fit. Remove the part, inspect it under good light, and retry only after correcting the cause.
The plastic has a white stress mark
Stress whitening usually means the part was bent, twisted, or forced. Do not use glue to conceal the cause. Check the manual’s orientation diagrams and confirm that neighboring pieces are seated correctly before applying any finishing treatment.
The model looks less colorful than the box
Check whether the missing detail is supplied as a sticker, decal, or optional paint step. Color molding covers the main blocks, but tiny vents, cameras, and markings may still rely on stickers or finishing. You can leave them as supplied and complete the model, or add detail later.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA joint is too loose
First verify that every part is fully seated and that no gate residue is interfering. If the manual does not call for adhesive, do not glue a joint before confirming the cause; glue can eliminate movement and make future repair difficult.
You bought tools before reading the manual
That is not a problem. Nippers, tweezers, and a panel-line marker can remain optional equipment. Use them only where they improve control or appearance, and let the kit’s instructions determine what is necessary.
How to compare beginner kits without relying on grade labels
Grade names can suggest a general design philosophy, but they do not guarantee identical assembly requirements. Compare the manual or official listing using these concrete questions:
| Question | What to look for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| How do parts connect? | Snap-fit diagrams or adhesive symbols. | Shows whether glue is optional, localized, or part of the stated process. |
| How are colors supplied? | Multicolor molding, stickers, or paint instructions. | Predicts how close a straight build will look to the artwork. |
| How are parts removed? | Touch-gate wording or nipper illustrations. | Sets your tool needs and the risk of rough gate marks. |
| What finishing is included? | Decal sheets, sticker placement, and panel-line guidance. | Helps you plan time without mistaking finishing for assembly. |
| What safety and age guidance is printed? | Warnings, ventilation advice, and age label. | Requirements differ by kit and should be followed exactly. |
Safety essentials
- Read the kit manual before cutting or gluing and keep it available during assembly.
- Use tools with controlled pressure and cut away from your fingers and face.
- Keep nippers, blades, paint, and adhesive away from children who are below the kit’s stated age.
- Ventilate the area when using paint, cement, or other chemicals, and follow each product label.
- Do not assume the ENTRY GRADE age guidance applies to another release; the cited example indicates ages 8 and up, while other kits may specify something different.
- Store spare parts, decals, and chemicals separately so they cannot be mistaken for toys or food.
The practical answer for a first kit
If you are choosing a first build, a documented touch-gate, snap-fit kit such as the ENTRY GRADE 1/144 RX-78-2 example lets you begin without buying glue, paint, or tools. Follow its manual, separate parts gently, and add a marker, decals, or nippers only if you want a cleaner or more detailed finish. If you choose a different Gunpla, inspect that kit’s manual first: the MG RX-78-2 Ver.2.0 example demonstrates that another model can include nipper instructions and adhesive guidance. The reliable rule is simple—trust the exact manual, not a blanket assumption about every Gundam kit.
