Call of Duty supports both cross-play and cross-progression through a linked Activision account. GTA VI is announced for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, but Rockstar has not confirmed cross-play, cross-progression, or a PC version in the current documentation. If you plan to buy GTA VI, choose the console on which you expect to play until Rockstar publishes a platform-transfer policy.
What cross-play and cross-progression mean
These features solve different problems. Cross-play lets people on different hardware platforms join the same multiplayer session. For example, a PlayStation player and an Xbox player can play together when a game supports cross-play between those platforms.
Cross-progression keeps some or all of your game progress available when you sign in on another supported platform. Depending on the publisher, that can include campaign or seasonal progress, multiplayer levels, unlocks, statistics, cosmetics, and other account data. It does not automatically mean that a purchase made on one platform gives you the same entitlement on every other platform; platform storefront rules can still apply.
A game can offer one feature without the other. It could allow players on different systems to meet online while keeping saves tied to each platform, or it could synchronize an account’s progress while limiting which platforms can play together. That distinction is central to the current GTA VI and Call of Duty answers.

GTA VI: what Rockstar has confirmed
Announced platforms and editions
Rockstar’s support page, updated August 18, 2026, says Grand Theft Auto VI can be pre-ordered for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The page describes Standard and Ultimate editions. It does not announce a PC edition, cross-play, or cross-progression.
That is a platform announcement, not a multiplayer compatibility promise. The absence of a feature on the page does not prove that Rockstar will never add it, but there is no official basis for telling a PS5 buyer that they will be able to play with an Xbox friend or move a GTA VI profile between those systems.
Can a PS5 player play GTA VI with an Xbox friend?
Not on the evidence currently published by Rockstar. Cross-play between PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S remains unannounced. Treat the two console versions as separate purchasing decisions unless Rockstar later documents a shared multiplayer environment.

Do not infer cross-play from the fact that both consoles are listed for the same game. A simultaneous release on two platforms only establishes availability on those platforms. The publisher still has to specify matchmaking, account services, and any restrictions on console families.
Will GTA VI progress follow you to another console?
Rockstar has not confirmed GTA VI cross-progression or a transfer process. The best available context is Rockstar’s existing GTA Online policy, which is a precedent rather than a GTA VI commitment.

Under the current GTA Online transfer rules, profiles can migrate from PlayStation 4 or Xbox One to PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar says profiles cannot migrate between PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and profiles cannot migrate from PlayStation or Xbox console families to PC.
“Profiles cannot be migrated between PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S or from PlayStation or Xbox console families to PC.” — Rockstar Games Customer Support, “Grand Theft Auto Online Character Transfers,” January 29, 2025.

The same policy also warns that progress made on different console generations does not synchronize after a migration. Rockstar’s February 24, 2026 wording is explicit:
“Important: Once your progress has been transferred from PlayStation 4 or Xbox One to PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S, your migrated profile will be retained on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. GTA Online progress made on different console generations will not be synced after migration.” — Rockstar Games Customer Support, February 24, 2026.
Those rules describe GTA Online, not GTA VI. They show that Rockstar has used a limited, one-way migration model rather than a universal account-sync model, so they should not be treated as evidence that GTA VI will share progress between PlayStation and Xbox.

What this means for a GTA VI purchase
- If you expect to remain on PlayStation, buy the PlayStation 5 edition you want.
- If you expect to remain on Xbox, buy the Xbox Series X|S edition you want.
- If a future console switch is likely, wait for Rockstar to publish GTA VI’s transfer and account rules before assuming your save, online character, or purchases will move.
- Do not buy a console edition on the expectation that a PC version or PC transfer is already guaranteed; neither is confirmed in the cited Rockstar material.
Standard and Ultimate are edition choices, not evidence of different cross-play rights. Rockstar’s announcement does not state that either edition includes a cross-platform entitlement.
Call of Duty: cross-play and cross-progression are documented
Black Ops 6
Activision says Black Ops 6 cross-play allows players on all supported platforms to play together. Its cross-progression system carries progress across every platform linked to the same Activision account.
The account requirement matters. Your progress is associated with the Activision account, not separately with each console profile. Signing into a different platform account that is not linked to the same Activision account can make your progress appear to be missing even when the game itself supports cross-progression.
Black Ops 7
Activision’s Black Ops 7 support information says cross-progression continues through the Activision account and works on any linked platform. The progression-earning modes listed are Co-op Campaign, Multiplayer, Zombies, and Warzone.
“Cross-progression continues in Call of Duty®: Black Ops 7, the unified playing experience that ties your progression to your Activision account.” — Activision Support, December 19, 2025.

This describes the account layer used by the title. It does not mean that every item sold through a particular storefront is automatically redeemable everywhere. Activision still notes that platform-specific purchase rules can apply, so check the current policy for a particular currency, bundle, add-on, or edition.
Why the Activision account is the key
Activision’s September 28, 2026 account guidance explains the mechanism:
“Because game progression in crossplay-enabled games is stored on your Activision account, you can play on any platform you have linked to your account, and your progression carries over.” — Activision Support, September 28, 2026.
In practical terms, cross-play determines who can join your session, while the Activision account determines where the supported progression is available. Link every console and PC platform you use to one Activision account before you start building progress on a second system.
How to set up Call of Duty cross-progression safely
- Choose one Activision account. Use the account you intend to keep permanently. Creating separate Activision accounts for different consoles defeats the shared-progression model.
- Sign in to Activision’s account management service. Confirm the account identity and review the platform connections shown for your profile.
- Link each console or PC platform account. Add the PlayStation, Xbox, or PC platform accounts you actually use. Follow the current on-screen authorization prompts; labels can change as Activision updates its account pages.
- Launch the game on the second platform. Verify that the game signs into the same Activision account rather than asking you to create or use a new one.
- Check your progression before buying add-ons. Confirm that your level, unlocks, and other supported data appear. If they do not, stop before making purchases and recheck the account linkage.
Cross-progression does not remove storefront rules. A purchase made through one platform may remain governed by that platform’s entitlement system, even when gameplay progress and many account items are shared.

Where Modern Warfare 4 fits
Activision’s July 20, 2026 editions page lists Modern Warfare 4 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Battle.net, Steam, and Nintendo Switch 2. The page gives a worldwide launch date of October 23, 2026.
The editions page confirms platforms and release timing, but it does not provide a dedicated cross-play matrix. Use Activision’s broader cross-play and account documentation for the general Call of Duty model rather than assuming that every edition, mode, or platform has identical restrictions.
Because October 23, 2026 is after the date of this article’s current information, platform availability and mode-specific rules should be checked again at launch. The listed platforms show the scope of the release; they do not by themselves define which purchases, modes, or progression elements transfer.
GTA VI and Call of Duty compared
| Question | GTA VI | Call of Duty |
|---|---|---|
| Cross-play status | Not announced in the current Rockstar documentation. | Documented for the current account-based ecosystem; Black Ops 6 says players on all platforms can play together. |
| Cross-progression status | Not announced for GTA VI. | Documented through one linked Activision account. |
| Confirmed platform scope | PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S; PC is not announced in the cited support page. | Current products span console and PC platforms; Modern Warfare 4 is also listed for Nintendo Switch 2. |
| Account or transfer model | GTA Online precedent uses limited profile migration and does not sync progress across different console generations after migration. | Progression is stored on the Activision account and carries to linked platforms. |
| What you should assume before buying | Choose the platform you expect to use; wait for a GTA VI policy before expecting a move. | Link all platforms to the same Activision account before playing on more than one system. |
Common situations and the correct expectation
You own a PS5 and your friend owns an Xbox Series X
For GTA VI, cross-play is not confirmed, so do not promise that you can join the same session. For Call of Duty, cross-play is part of the documented model, provided both players use supported versions and are signed into correctly configured accounts.
You start Call of Duty on Xbox and later use PlayStation
Link both platform accounts to the same Activision account. Supported progression can then carry across. A second, separate Activision account will not merge automatically with the first one.
You move from an older console generation
GTA Online’s current policy allows specified PS4 or Xbox One profiles to migrate to PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, but it warns that progress made on different generations will not sync after migration. That rule should not be projected onto GTA VI until Rockstar publishes GTA VI-specific guidance.
You want to switch from console to PC
Rockstar’s current GTA Online transfer policy says console-family profiles cannot migrate to PC, and GTA VI PC availability is not announced in the cited material. Call of Duty’s account-based model is designed for linked console and PC platforms, but individual entitlements and purchases can still follow platform-specific rules.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Identify whether the feature you need is cross-play, cross-progression, or both.
- For GTA VI, confirm the platform on the store listing and do not infer a transfer right from a simultaneous release.
- For Call of Duty, verify that every platform is linked to the same Activision account.
- After linking, launch the game and check your progression before purchasing a second copy, bundle, or currency pack.
- Read the title-specific entitlement rules for add-ons and currency; shared progression does not guarantee shared purchases.
- When a publisher updates its policy, use the newest title-specific guidance rather than relying on an older game’s transfer behavior.
Bottom line for each game
Call of Duty is the clear choice if playing with friends across console and PC and carrying progress between linked systems are requirements: Activision documents both features and ties progression to one account. GTA VI has a confirmed PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S release, but Rockstar has not yet announced cross-play or cross-progression. Until it does, treat each GTA VI console edition as platform-specific and regard the existing GTA Online migration rules only as background, not a promise about GTA VI.
