No—not by themselves. Google’s restriction on self-serving review snippets changes whether a business website can earn star-rich-result treatment. It is not documented as a penalty that lowers the business in Google Maps or other local results. Local visibility is assessed through a separate framework centered on relevance, distance, and prominence. Reviews can contribute to prominence, but Google does not publish a weighting that lets anyone calculate a ranking drop from losing website stars.

What Google changed about review snippets

A review snippet is the short review excerpt or rating information that Google may show with a search result or in a Knowledge Panel. Marking up eligible review content can make a page eligible for that feature, but eligibility never guarantees that Google will display stars or review text.

The September 2019 self-serving review restriction

In September 2019, Google restricted review rich results for self-serving reviews associated with LocalBusiness and Organization entities. Google described a review as self-serving when a review about entity A appears on entity A’s own website, either in the site’s structured data or through an embedded third-party review widget. Current Review snippet documentation preserves the same principle: when the reviewed business or organization controls the reviews about itself, its pages are ineligible for the star feature.

The rule concerns a search appearance feature. It does not say that Google removes the business from local results, suppresses its Business Profile, or lowers its Maps position. A business can therefore lose stars beside its organic listing while its local ranking remains governed by the factors Google describes for local search.

Why review-rich-result eligibility is different from local ranking

Google publishes separate guidance for structured data and local results. Keeping those systems separate prevents a common mistake: treating a visual change in an organic result as proof of a local-ranking penalty.

Review snippet eligibility

This is the question, “May Google show review stars or an excerpt for this page?” The answer depends on the Review snippet rules, the type of entity being reviewed, whether the marked-up content is visible to users, and whether the page follows Google’s policies. Even compliant markup can remain unused because Google does not promise to show every eligible rich result.

Structured-data manual actions

A structured-data manual action is a policy response to problematic markup. Google’s General structured data guidelines state that a manual action makes a page lose eligibility to appear as a rich result; the same guidance explicitly says it does not affect how the page ranks in Google web search. The immediate consequence is therefore a search-feature loss, not a documented web-ranking demotion.

Local ranking

Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and prominence (also called popularity). Relevance measures how well a business matches what someone is looking for. Distance reflects the location of the searcher or the location term used in the query. Prominence reflects how well-known or established the business appears to be, using signals such as links and reviews.

Google’s reviews system

Google also has a separate reviews system for first-party editorial review content—articles and pages intended to provide recommendations, opinions, or analysis. Google says that system does not evaluate third-party customer reviews posted in the reviews section of a product or service page. It should not be conflated with the self-serving review-snippet rule or with customer reviews attached to a Business Profile.

Four review-related systems compared

System or signal What it concerns Published consequence
Review snippet structured data Stars or review excerpts shown with an eligible page Eligibility may be lost when the page violates the feature rules; display is never guaranteed.
Structured-data manual action Problematic structured markup on a page Rich-result eligibility is removed. Google says ordinary web-search ranking is unaffected.
Business Profile customer reviews Customer feedback associated with a local business Review count and positive ratings can contribute to local prominence. Their exact weighting is undisclosed.
Google’s reviews system First-party editorial review articles and pages Evaluates review content intended to inform recommendations; it does not evaluate third-party customer reviews in a product or service page’s review area.

Can losing website stars still coincide with a local-ranking drop?

Yes, the two events can occur at the same time, but coincidence does not establish that the snippet change caused the local movement. Local rankings fluctuate when relevance, distance, prominence, competitors, search location, business information, or review activity changes. The removal of a self-serving star display is not, on its own, evidence of a Maps penalty.

For example, a business might notice that stars disappear from its organic listing during the same period that a competitor gains reviews, a service category changes, or Google tests a different local-result layout. The visual loss is attributable to snippet eligibility; the local movement requires a separate diagnosis against local-ranking factors.

How reviews can matter to local prominence

Google’s local-ranking guidance does not dismiss reviews. It identifies the number of reviews and positive ratings as information that can contribute to prominence. That statement supports a relationship between genuine Business Profile review signals and local visibility, but it does not establish a fixed boost, threshold, or percentage.

What Google publishes

  • Local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and prominence.
  • Prominence can include information such as how many websites link to a business and how many reviews it has.
  • More reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking.
  • Google does not publish the formula, relative weighting, or a guaranteed position change for any review count or rating.

What Google does not publish

  • There is no official number of reviews that guarantees a top-three local result.
  • There is no documented penalty percentage for losing review stars in an organic snippet.
  • There is no basis for claiming that review schema itself boosts a Business Profile’s Maps position.
  • There is no reliable conversion from a star-rating change on a website page to a local-ranking position.

Use review quality and volume as one part of a broader prominence picture, not as a standalone ranking lever.

Does losing review stars hurt my Google Maps ranking?

Google’s published guidance does not say that losing self-serving stars from a website lowers a Business Profile’s Maps position. The stars belong to a website search feature, while Maps and local-pack visibility are evaluated through local signals. If the profile’s review count, rating, relevance, distance, or prominence changes, the local result may change for those reasons. The disappearance of stars from an organic listing is not proof that Google applied a local penalty.

Check the surfaces separately. Search the business website result and the Business Profile at different times and locations, because a missing organic star display does not tell you whether Business Profile reviews are still present. Avoid making a causal claim from a single before-and-after screenshot.

Are organic review stars the same as Business Profile reviews?

No. Organic review stars are a rich-result presentation tied to structured data on a webpage. Business Profile reviews are customer feedback associated with the local business listing. They may describe related customer experiences, but Google documents different rules and consequences for each. Website markup can lose eligibility while the Business Profile remains visible, and a Business Profile can continue collecting reviews even when the website shows no stars.

This distinction also matters when reporting performance. “The website lost stars” describes a search appearance change. “The business lost reviews” describes a change to a local prominence signal. They should not be combined into one metric or explained with one presumed cause.

What business owners should do after a snippet change

1. Identify exactly what disappeared

First determine whether the change affects stars beside your website’s organic result, reviews attached to your Business Profile, or both. A website rich result and a Business Profile review are different surfaces. Losing the former does not prove that the latter has been removed or devalued.

2. Check whether the page is reviewing itself

If your page describes your own business and marks up customer testimonials or an aggregate rating about that same business, it falls within the self-serving restriction. An embedded review widget does not avoid the rule; Google’s definition includes reviews supplied through an embedded third-party widget.

3. Keep only policy-compliant markup

For pages that review other businesses, mark up the review content that visitors can actually see on the page. Do not aggregate ratings copied from other websites, and do not mark up material that is hidden, misleading, fake, or otherwise inconsistent with the page. Valid syntax alone cannot make prohibited content eligible.

4. Separate website markup from customer-review generation

Customer feedback on your Business Profile is a local-prominence signal, while review markup on your own website is a rich-result eligibility issue. Manage them as separate workstreams. A change to one should not be treated as proof that the other changed.

5. Request genuine feedback without incentives

Google permits businesses to remind customers to leave reviews and to provide a direct review link or QR code. It prohibits incentives offered in exchange for posting, changing, or removing a review. Ask for honest feedback from real customers, and do not condition a reward, refund, discount, gift, or service benefit on the rating or wording.

6. Review the three local-ranking factors

If local visibility changed, audit the business information and search context against relevance, distance, and prominence. Confirm that the services and categories represented on the profile match what the business actually offers, that location information is accurate, and that competitors have not changed the prominence landscape. Google recommends complete and accurate Business Profile information, but completeness does not guarantee a specific position.

Guidance for publishers that review other businesses

A publisher, directory, or comparison site can use Review snippet markup when the page contains its own visible review content and follows Google’s feature rules. The reviewed business should not be the party controlling the reviews about itself on that page.

  • Show the review text or rating to users on the same page where it is marked up.
  • Represent the page’s actual review content rather than importing an aggregate rating from another site.
  • Do not manufacture reviews or hide material facts about how they were obtained.
  • Do not treat the presence of valid markup as a promise that stars will appear.

These practices protect rich-result eligibility. They do not create a guaranteed local-ranking advantage for the businesses mentioned in the article.

Troubleshooting common scenarios

Observed symptom Most defensible interpretation Next check
Stars vanish from the business’s own organic listing after a site update The page may no longer qualify under the self-serving review rule, or Google may simply have stopped displaying an eligible feature. Confirm whether the page reviews the same business and whether the marked-up content is visible and policy-compliant.
The Business Profile remains visible, but the website result has no stars Website rich-result eligibility and local Business Profile visibility are separate systems. Assess local performance using relevance, distance, and prominence rather than the organic star display.
A structured-data manual action is reported Google says rich-result eligibility is lost; its guidance says ordinary web-search ranking is unaffected. Correct the markup or content that violates the structured-data rules and monitor eligibility after remediation.
Local results decline at the same time as a snippet change The timing alone does not establish causation. Check profile accuracy, service relevance, search location, competitor prominence, and changes in genuine review activity.
Compliant review markup never produces stars Google does not guarantee rich-result display, even for eligible pages. Verify that the content is visible and valid, then treat the absence of stars as a display decision rather than proof of a ranking penalty.

Questions to avoid when measuring impact

Do not ask, “How many local positions did the lost stars cost?” Google provides no published conversion for that question. Also avoid treating a rating shown in an organic snippet as the same object as the review count and ratings associated with a Business Profile. They may draw on related public feedback, but the documented rules and consequences differ.

Likewise, do not claim that adding aggregateRating to a local business page will improve Maps visibility. The available guidance supports rich-result eligibility rules for markup and separately identifies reviews as one possible prominence signal. It does not support a causal ranking boost from the schema itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision framework

  1. Website stars changed, local position stable: treat it as a rich-result eligibility or display issue and leave local conclusions out of the diagnosis.
  2. Website stars changed, local position also changed: investigate the local factors independently; do not assign the drop to the snippet without evidence beyond timing.
  3. Business Profile reviews changed: examine genuine review volume, rating trends, policy removals, and competitor prominence, while remembering that Google publishes no weighting.
  4. Editorial review page lost eligibility: inspect self-serving status, visibility of the marked-up content, copied ratings, and any policy violation.

Frequently asked questions

Can review schema improve my local-pack position?

Google’s published guidance does not support that claim. Review schema can make a page eligible for a review rich result, while review count and positive ratings may contribute to local prominence through Business Profile signals. Those are separate mechanisms, and no ranking boost from schema is documented.

Will removing testimonials from my homepage restore stars?

Not necessarily. If the page is a self-review of the business, it is ineligible for the star feature under the self-serving rule. Removing markup may prevent a policy conflict, but Google still does not guarantee that stars will appear for any page.

Does an embedded review platform bypass Google’s rule?

No. Google’s definition of self-serving reviews includes reviews placed directly in a site’s structured data and reviews delivered through an embedded third-party widget when the business controls the reviews about itself.

Can a manual action lower my website’s normal ranking?

Google says a structured-data manual action removes eligibility for rich results and does not affect how the page ranks in Google web search. You should still correct the violating markup or content, but do not describe the action as a documented ordinary-ranking demotion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How many reviews do I need to rank in the local three-pack?

There is no official threshold. Google says review count and positive ratings can help prominence, but it does not publish a number, formula, or guaranteed position tied to review volume or rating.

Are review incentives allowed if customers are free to choose their rating?

No. Google prohibits incentives offered in exchange for posting, changing, or removing reviews. You may request honest feedback and provide a review link or QR code, but the request cannot be conditioned on a reward or a particular rating.

Why did stars disappear even though my markup is valid?

Eligibility is not a display guarantee. Google may choose not to show an otherwise valid rich result. Confirm that the marked-up review is visible to users, reflects the page’s actual content, and follows the self-serving and other Review snippet rules.

Should I stop asking customers for Google reviews?

No. Genuine customer reviews remain relevant to local prominence, and Google permits reminders and direct review links. Ask real customers for honest feedback without incentives, review gating, or requests to alter or remove reviews.

The bottom line for local businesses

Google’s self-serving review-snippet restriction is a rule about whether a website page may show review stars in search. A structured-data manual action likewise removes rich-result eligibility while Google says it does not change web-search ranking. Local results follow a separate relevance-distance-prominence framework in which review count and positive ratings may contribute to prominence, with no public formula or guaranteed effect. Preserve accurate business information, earn genuine reviews without incentives, and diagnose local changes using all three local factors rather than using the presence or absence of website stars as a proxy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Google review snippet changes affect local search rankings?

Not by themselves. The self-serving review rule changes rich-result eligibility on a website; Google separately evaluates local results using relevance, distance, and prominence.

Does losing review stars hurt my Google Maps ranking?

Google does not document a Maps penalty for losing website review stars. Check Business Profile reviews and the three local-ranking factors independently.

Are organic review stars the same as Google Business Profile reviews?

No. Organic stars are a webpage rich-result feature. Business Profile reviews are customer feedback associated with a local listing and can contribute to prominence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can review schema boost local rankings?

No documented guidance supports a ranking boost from review schema itself. Schema affects eligibility for a search feature, not a guaranteed Maps position.

Are incentives for Google reviews allowed?

No. Google allows honest review requests and direct links or QR codes, but prohibits incentives for posting, changing, or removing reviews.

Why might valid review markup show no stars?

Google does not guarantee display, even when markup is valid and eligible. The content must still be visible, accurate, and policy-compliant.

The Bottom Line

Website review-star eligibility and local ranking are separate. Keep markup compliant, seek genuine Business Profile reviews without incentives, and evaluate local visibility through relevance, distance, and prominence—not the presence of organic stars.
