Short answer: Google Messages does inspect message signals to identify spam and scams, but standard protection is designed to run machine-learning models on your phone. That is analysis, not the same as Google employees reading your conversations. Privacy depends on the message type and what you do next: eligible RCS chats are end-to-end encrypted, while SMS and MMS do not get that RCS guarantee; URLs may be uploaded for safety checks; unencrypted messages may be processed briefly in documented fallback cases; and reporting spam deliberately sends sender details and recent messages to Google and carriers.
An optional Enhanced protection mode can add cloud-based Gemini analysis through Private AI Compute for complex conversations. Its availability varies by device and rollout, so check which mode your Messages app actually offers.
What Google Messages scam protection actually does
Scam protection is an automated screening system. Google Messages uses machine-learning models to look for known spam patterns and conversational signals associated with scams. Google says the standard models operate on your device, allowing the phone to classify suspicious messages without routinely sending their full text to Google.

That still means the app is analyzing your messages. If by “read” you mean “does software inspect message content or signals?”, the answer is yes. If you mean “can Google staff routinely open and read my conversation?”, standard on-device detection is not described that way. Google’s October 2024 security explanation says the content is not sent to Google unless you report spam.

Protection is most relevant to conversations with people who are not in your contacts. A warning can appear while you are texting, before you follow a link, share information or send money. Detection is intended to identify suspicious patterns in real time rather than wait for a later abuse report.
Google has reported that more than one billion people use Google Messages and that the service protects against about two billion suspicious messages each month. Those are Google-reported scale figures, not an independent test of accuracy. They do not establish a particular detection rate, and a warning is not proof that every flagged message is malicious.
Where processing happens in each privacy scenario

“On-device” therefore does not mean “no inspection.” It means the normal classification work is performed by software on the handset. The URL and fallback disclosures are why an absolute claim that Google never processes message content would be inaccurate.

Does end-to-end encryption keep Google from seeing RCS messages?
Eligible RCS chats are end-to-end encrypted. Google’s privacy explanation says, “With end-to-end encryption, no one can read the content sent between you and the other person.” In practical terms, the message is protected while traveling between the sender and recipient, and Google says it cannot read the encrypted conversation as an intermediary.
That protection applies only when the conversation is actually using RCS end-to-end encryption. The chat must support RCS, encryption must be available for that exchange, and both sides must be participating in the protected channel. A label or status in the conversation can tell you whether enhanced chat features are active, but the exact indicators can differ by app version and device.

SMS and MMS are different transport systems. They do not receive the RCS end-to-end-encryption guarantee. Their content can therefore be handled differently by carriers, messaging infrastructure and device software. Do not assume that a text sent from the same Messages app has the same privacy properties merely because the app is the same.
RCS encryption versus scam analysis
Encryption protects the exchange from intermediaries; scam detection evaluates signals on the device so it can warn you. Those statements are compatible. A model running locally can inspect a message for suspicious patterns without uploading the conversation to a server. If you report the message, however, the reporting workflow is a separate, intentional sharing event.

Link verification
Google Messages says it may upload a URL to Google to check whether the link is malicious. This is narrower than uploading the entire conversation, but the URL itself can reveal a destination, campaign or tracking identifier. Treat a link as data that may leave the phone even when the surrounding RCS text remains encrypted.
Ephemeral processing of unencrypted messages
The support documentation also says spam detection may ephemerally process the contents of unencrypted messages when the device cannot perform all filtering locally. “Ephemeral” indicates temporary processing for the filtering task, not a promise that every byte stays on the handset. This disclosure applies to unencrypted content, which includes message types that do not have RCS end-to-end encryption.
Reporting a conversation
Choosing Report spam is the clearest user-controlled transfer. Google says the report sends sender details and recent messages with that sender to Google and carriers. It is not limited to a hidden spam score; recent conversation content is part of the report package. Report only when you are comfortable sharing that material for abuse investigation and network filtering.

Enhanced protection and Private AI Compute
Google’s current Android scam-protection description adds an optional Enhanced protection mode for complex message context. It can use cloud Gemini models through Private AI Compute. Google says data is encrypted and processed in a dedicated space that is inaccessible to anyone else, including Google. This is a different processing path from ordinary on-device detection, so read the setting description before enabling it if keeping analysis local is your priority. Rollout and availability vary.
What standard Scam Detection does not mean
- It does not mean a person at Google is watching your chats in real time.
- It does not mean every message is uploaded for a central human review.
- It does not give SMS or MMS the same confidentiality as encrypted RCS.
- It does not guarantee that every warning is correct or that every scam will be detected.
- It does not make a reported conversation private again after you submit the report.
Google also states that information collected in Google Messages is not used for advertising. That advertising statement is separate from the technical disclosures about URL checks, fallback filtering and user-submitted spam reports.
How to turn off Spam Protection and Scam Detection
The setting is available only when Spam protection is supported on your device and in your version of Google Messages. Turning it off removes the app’s built-in spam filtering and Scam Detection warnings; it does not change the underlying security of RCS, SMS or MMS.
- Open Google Messages.
- Tap your profile picture or initials in the top-right corner.
- Choose Messages settings.
- Open Protection & safety.
- Tap Spam protection.
- Turn Enable spam protection off.
If you do not see Protection & safety or the toggle, the feature may not be available on that device, account, app build or rollout. Updating Messages, completing Android system updates and checking again can clarify whether the control has arrived, but Google does not expose the option universally at the same time.
What happens after you disable it
Messages can still be delivered, and your carrier’s own filtering or Android security features may continue to operate. You lose Google Messages’ local warnings and automatic spam handling, so you will need to judge suspicious links, urgent payment requests and requests for verification codes yourself. Disabling the toggle also does not retract any report you previously sent.

How to choose the privacy setting that fits you
Keep standard protection enabled
This is the practical choice for most people who want warnings while keeping ordinary classification on the phone. It offers protection against known patterns and suspicious conversations without making a routine report to Google. Remember that link verification and documented unencrypted fallbacks remain possible.
Disable protection for maximum local control
Choose this when avoiding the feature’s documented processing paths matters more to you than automated warnings. You will need another way to identify scams, such as checking a company through an independently typed web address or contacting a person through a known number.
Use Enhanced protection only when its trade-off is acceptable
Enhanced protection is intended for difficult, context-heavy conversations that ordinary rules may not understand. Because it can use cloud Gemini analysis in Private AI Compute, it introduces a cloud-processing path that standard on-device mode does not. Check the exact wording and availability in your app before opting in.

Common mistakes and safer responses
Assuming every chat is RCS
Look at the conversation’s transport and encryption indicators rather than relying on the app name. If the exchange falls back to SMS or MMS, do not apply RCS privacy assumptions.

A local model still examines message signals. The privacy advantage is that routine classification can happen without sending the full conversation to Google, not that the message is ignored.

Forwarding a suspicious link to test it
Link checking can involve uploading the URL. Do not paste private tokens or password-reset links into chats merely to see whether a warning appears. Open account services through an address you type yourself instead.
Reporting before preserving what you need
A report shares recent messages with Google and carriers. If you need the conversation for a workplace, legal or security record, save the necessary details first, then report only if the abuse benefit outweighs that disclosure.
Treating a warning as a verdict
Scam detection is a safety signal, not proof. A legitimate sender can be misclassified, and a new scam can evade known patterns. Verify unexpected requests through a trusted channel, never through the contact details supplied in the suspicious message.
Bottom line for “Can Google see my texts?”
Google Messages does analyze messages for scam signals. In standard mode, Google says that analysis is primarily performed by on-device machine-learning models, while eligible RCS content remains end-to-end encrypted between sender and recipient. That does not make every message type equally private: URLs may be uploaded for verification, unencrypted contents may be processed temporarily in fallback cases, and reporting spam sends sender details plus recent messages to Google and carriers. Optional Enhanced protection can add encrypted cloud Gemini processing in Private AI Compute. Check your transport type and settings, then decide whether the warning benefit justifies those documented processing paths.
