Usually, standard 5G access is part of a carrier plan rather than a separate monthly fee—but the answer depends on your carrier and exact plan. A premium 5G tier may have different eligibility rules, while taxes, surcharges, or a one-time device charge can raise your bill without being a fee for using 5G.
Separate 5G access from other plan and bill charges
Check three things independently: whether your plan includes standard 5G, whether it includes the faster or premium network tier you want, and what other charges appear on your bill. A fee shown on the same bill as 5G service is not automatically a 5G access charge.
- Standard 5G access: Whether your plan lets a compatible phone connect to the carrier’s standard 5G network.
- Premium-tier access: Whether your plan includes a named tier such as Verizon 5G Ultra Wideband or AT&T 5G+.
- Other charges: Taxes, government fees, carrier surcharges, and one-time device activation or connection charges.
For example, Verizon distinguishes plan access charges from applicable taxes, government fees, and its own mobile surcharges. Verizon says its surcharges are carrier charges, not taxes or government-imposed fees. The label or timing of a charge alone does not establish that it is for 5G.
What the carrier information establishes
Verizon
Verizon’s 5G and 5G Ultra Wideband FAQs state that all Verizon monthly mobile and prepaid plans include access to its 5G network. That statement concerns standard 5G access; it does not mean every plan includes 5G Ultra Wideband.

The same FAQ lists Ultra Wideband eligibility by plan, including specified current and legacy plans and certain prepaid plans. It also describes a $10-per-month add-on that had previously been offered for some unlimited plans. Do not treat that former add-on as generally available now; check current terms and the eligibility of your own plan.
Verizon says 5G requires a 5G-enabled device and coverage. A 5G phone shifts to 4G LTE where 5G is unavailable. Having 5G access in a plan therefore does not guarantee a 5G connection everywhere.

Verizon’s Important Plan Information page describes applicable taxes, government fees, and Verizon mobile surcharges separately from monthly plan access charges. For covered service categories, it says these charges could add 14% to 56% to standard monthly access and other charges, effective July 1, 2026. This is Verizon’s estimate for the categories it describes—not a universal range for every carrier or every customer. The amounts vary by service address and may change.

AT&T
AT&T publishes information about 5G+ and separately describes regulatory, administrative, and other charges. Those materials show why network access and bill line items should be checked separately, but they do not establish that every AT&T plan has identical 5G terms or that every customer pays a standalone 5G access fee. Confirm the exact plan and charge with AT&T.
T-Mobile
T-Mobile says some plans include recurring monthly taxes and fees in the service price. It also describes a device connection charge as a one-time charge when a customer activates or upgrades a device. These are possible reasons a bill may differ from the advertised service price; they do not establish a 5G-specific surcharge.

How to check whether a charge is for 5G
- Find the exact plan name. Check whether it is a current or legacy plan. A carrier’s general description may not settle the terms of an older account.
- Identify the network tier in question. Ask whether you mean standard 5G or a premium tier such as Ultra Wideband or 5G+. Check whether that tier is included, unavailable, or offered as a separate add-on under your plan.
- Read the bill line by line. Separate the plan’s monthly access charge from taxes, government fees, carrier surcharges, and any one-time activation or device connection charge. Check whether recurring taxes and fees are already included in your plan price.
- Ask the carrier to identify an unclear line item. Ask whether it is recurring or one-time, what service or event caused it, and whether it applies to 5G access specifically. Do not infer that a charge labeled “regulatory,” “administrative,” or “recovery” is a 5G fee.
- Check the phone and coverage if the issue is connection quality. Confirm that the phone supports the carrier’s 5G network and that coverage is available where you use it. A plan charge and the ability to receive a 5G signal are separate questions.
What can change the answer
- Plan and account type: Terms can differ for legacy plans, prepaid service, business accounts, and mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs). The carrier examples above do not establish the terms of every such service.
- Location: Taxes and some carrier charges can depend on the service address. A published national illustration may not match your bill.
- Time: Plan names, premium-tier eligibility, device requirements, and fees can change. Check the current terms attached to your account rather than relying on an old price or add-on description.
- Device and coverage: A plan that permits 5G access cannot provide a 5G connection if the phone is incompatible or the location lacks 5G coverage.
