Often, yes: many B2B buying groups form and rank a vendor shortlist before their first conversation with sales, and the vendor they speak with first is frequently the one they ultimately choose. But the pattern is not universal, and it does not make sales irrelevant. Recent studies point to a more useful distinction: buyers often want to research independently, then turn to sellers for guidance that is specific to their organization.
How often is a preferred vendor chosen before the first sales conversation?
In 6sense’s 2025 Buyer Experience Report, 94% of surveyed buying groups said they ranked their shortlist by preference before engaging sellers. Among the initial-survey respondents (n=3,744), 77.0% said their first vendor conversation was with the eventual winner. These are findings from 6sense’s survey, not universal market rates. The report also included a supplemental survey of 766 respondents, where 81% gave the same first-conversation result; that is a separate sample and should not be combined with the initial-survey figure. 6sense’s 2025 report describes two surveys with more than 4,000 responses in total.
The shortlist appears to narrow the competitive field early. In that same 2025 study, buyers evaluated an average of 5.1 vendors and had 3.6 on their Day One shortlist; 95% eventually bought from a vendor on that initial shortlist. These figures describe the surveyed buyers’ reported behavior, not a guarantee that a shortlisted supplier will win any particular deal.

6sense reported that first contact with a seller took place after about 61% of the buying journey in its 2025 study, compared with about 69% in 2024. The publisher characterized the shift as buyers contacting sellers roughly six to seven weeks sooner. These are study averages, not a reliable schedule for an individual account or a recommended outreach threshold.

6sense frames the pattern as two broad phases: a Selection Phase, when a buying group researches options and develops a preference, followed by a Validation Phase, when it engages vendors and finalizes its decision. This is a useful way to interpret the report, not a fixed map for every industry, deal size, or purchase. The 2024 report, based on 2,509 recent B2B buyers, similarly described roughly the first 70% of the journey as selection and the final 30% as validation; its results provide historical context rather than a substitute for the newer findings. 6sense’s 2024 report also cautioned that early content form fills can be mistaken for buying readiness. That is the publisher’s interpretation, not independent proof that timing explains every lead-quality problem.
Does this mean buyers do not want to talk to sales?
No. A preference for independent research is not the same as a preference to make every decision without human help. Gartner’s June 25, 2025 release reports that 61% of surveyed B2B buyers preferred an overall rep-free buying experience, while also distinguishing general information and learning—where buyers favor digital self-service—from contextual intelligence, such as whether an offering fits their organization, where they prefer seller input. Gartner VP Analyst Robert Blaisdell put the risk of mistimed contact plainly: “Bad prospecting actively damages relationships with potential customers.”

Software buyers show a related but category-specific pattern. G2’s 2024 Buyer Behavior Report found strong self-service preferences across software purchase stages, but also continued value in vendor involvement at selected moments. It reported that 69% usually engaged a software-company salesperson only after making a decision. That statistic is about software buyers, not B2B purchasing as a whole. G2’s 2024 report surveyed 1,940 B2B decision-makers responsible for or influential in purchasing for departments, business units, or entire businesses.
What makes a sales conversation useful?
Buyers can often find generic product descriptions and category explanations on their own. The seller’s stronger role is to help resolve questions that depend on the buyer’s circumstances: organizational fit, implementation, trade-offs, or how a product addresses a specific need. Gartner Director Analyst Alice Walmesley recommends that sellers “offer unique guidance, acting as a sounding board for buyers.”

The practical implication is not to disappear until a buyer has made a decision. It is to make useful information easy to access, avoid assuming that an early interaction means a buyer is ready for a call, and make outreach relevant to what the buyer needs. Gartner’s release reports that, in its survey of 632 B2B buyers conducted in August–September 2024, 73% actively avoided suppliers that sent irrelevant outreach. The release also says 69% reported inconsistencies between information on a supplier’s website and information from its salespeople. It presents selected results rather than the full questionnaire, sampling details, or confidence intervals.
What B2B teams can take from these findings
Help buyers evaluate independently
Make product, category, fit, pricing, implementation, and proof-point information available for buyers doing their own research. Gartner’s findings support self-service for general information and learning; they do not establish that more content by itself causes a supplier to win.
Rank #4
Use contact as a chance to clarify, not repeat
A seller conversation should add context: test whether the offering fits the organization, answer questions the public information cannot resolve, and help buyers weigh options. Repeating information buyers can already find is less likely to add value.
Keep the website and sales story aligned
Check that product claims, capabilities, pricing explanations, and implementation details are consistent across public pages and seller conversations. Inconsistency can undermine confidence just as buyers move from research to validation.
Best Value
Do not infer readiness from one early signal
A content interaction or form fill may indicate research, not a request for immediate sales contact. 6sense’s 2024 report raises this as a possible explanation for some perceived lead-quality problems; it is not causal evidence or a universal rule about how to score leads.
Choose relevance over a universal timing rule
The 6sense and Gartner findings do not identify one ideal day or point in every buying journey for sales to make contact. Tailor outreach to the buyer’s expressed needs and context rather than treating an average journey percentage as an individual trigger.

The figures describe different populations, years, and questions. A reported preference for rep-free buying is not the same measure as having ranked a shortlist before seller contact; software findings should not automatically be generalized to other B2B categories.

Taken together, these surveys support a qualified conclusion: many buyers start sales conversations with a preference already formed, but sellers can still influence the decision when they offer relevant, consistent, context-specific help. The studies describe reported behavior and do not prove that any single marketing or sales tactic caused a vendor to become the preferred choice or win a deal.
