No. Many PC laptops come with Windows, but laptops also ship with macOS, ChromeOS, or Linux, and some are sold without an operating system installed. Check the exact model and seller listing: the operating system can vary even among configurations of a similar computer.
Which operating systems come on laptops?
Windows
Windows is widely supplied on PC laptops, but the edition and its support status matter. Microsoft’s Intune documentation lists Windows 11 editions and records that Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. That date does not mean a Windows 10 computer stops working; it means the operating system is no longer supported under Microsoft’s stated lifecycle. Check the specific edition and support details for a laptop you are considering. Microsoft’s supported operating systems reference.
macOS
Apple’s Mac laptops use macOS. If you want a laptop that runs macOS, look at Apple’s MacBook computers rather than expecting Windows to be installed on every laptop.

Chromebooks come with ChromeOS, not Windows. They are a distinct category of laptop; confirm that your essential apps, school or work requirements, and file workflows suit ChromeOS before choosing one.

Linux
Some laptops are sold with a Linux distribution, such as Ubuntu, or can be configured to run one. Linux is a family of operating systems, not a single edition. Compatibility depends on the exact laptop, distribution, applications, and peripherals. Microsoft’s documentation includes Ubuntu Desktop and Red Hat Enterprise Linux among platforms supported by its Intune service, but that enterprise-management support does not establish that every consumer app or laptop component will work with every Linux distribution. See Microsoft’s platform list.
No operating system installed
Some sellers offer PC configurations without a preinstalled operating system. Availability depends on the market, model, and seller. Check whether the listing includes an operating-system license or installation support, and account for the setup work required before the laptop is ready to use.

Is ChromeOS Flex the same as ChromeOS?
No. Google describes ChromeOS as the system available on Chromebooks, Chromeboxes, and Chromebases. ChromeOS Flex is an installable option for compatible existing Windows, Mac, or Linux computers. Google says Flex has most, but not all, ChromeOS features. Standard ChromeOS devices have a Google security chip and verified boot; Flex devices do not.
Compatibility is not universal: Flex does not support ARM architecture, and Google guarantees it only on certified models. Some hardware features, including fingerprint readers, active pens, and Thunderbolt functionality, are not officially supported or maintained. Before installing Flex, check the ChromeOS Flex feature comparison and Google’s certified models information for the exact computer.

How do you choose the right operating system?
Start with the specific laptop configuration, not just its product family. Compare the following points before buying:
- Apps and files: Confirm that the software you need for work, school, creative projects, or gaming runs on the operating system and edition. Check how you will access and exchange your existing files.
- Hardware compatibility: Verify support for the exact model, processor architecture, peripherals, and any features you rely on. For ChromeOS Flex, use Google’s certified-model information rather than assuming a compatible-looking PC will work.
- Updates and support: Check the operating-system version and its support status. For example, Microsoft lists October 14, 2025, as Windows 10’s end-of-support date in its Intune documentation.
- Setup effort: A computer sold without an OS may require you to choose, license, and install one. That is a different starting point from a laptop supplied ready to set up with an operating system.
- Accounts and management: Consider the devices and accounts you already use, along with any school or workplace requirements or management policies.
Do usage statistics show what most laptops run?
Not reliably from the figures often quoted online. Valve’s September 2026 Steam Hardware & Software Survey reported Windows at 95.03%, macOS at 1.92%, and Linux at 3.05% among survey respondents. Valve describes participation as optional and anonymous, and the survey is monthly. These figures describe Steam survey participants—not laptop ownership, laptop sales, or all computer users—so they should not be treated as general laptop market share.
