Yes. A 2010 model-based study reported that aircraft emissions released during cruise could contribute to pollution at ground level after atmospheric transport and chemical reactions. Chemistry World reported the study’s estimate that cruise emissions accounted for 80% of the modeled health impact of aircraft emissions—about 8,000 early deaths annually. Those figures describe a historical model estimate, not a current count of deaths or a measurement of today’s aviation impacts.

Why look beyond take-off and landing?

Aircraft emissions are often discussed in two different ways: their contribution to climate change over a flight and their effect on air quality near the ground. A common assumption was that air-quality effects mainly came from landing and take-off (LTO), when aircraft are close to populated areas. The 2010 study challenged that assumption by examining whether emissions released during cruise could also affect the air people breathe.

Lead researcher Steven Barrett put the distinction this way: “We used to assume that climate was due to full flight emissions and air quality was just due to the landing and take-off emissions.” Chemistry World quoted Barrett in its 7 September 2010 report about the study.

How cruise emissions could reach breathing-zone air

The MIT-based researchers combined an emissions inventory with a chemistry transport model to estimate how aircraft pollution moved and changed in the atmosphere. Rather than treating cruise emissions as pollution that remained far above the surface, the modeling considered transport toward ground level and chemical transformations along the way.

The pollutants discussed included fine particulate matter smaller than 2.5 micrometres (PM2.5), black carbon and organic carbon. The report also described aerosols formed through atmospheric reactions involving nitric and sulfuric acids. These are not all emitted as finished particles at the point of release: some form later as gases and other substances react in the atmosphere.

Frank Kelly, identified by Chemistry World as an environmental health expert at King’s College London, said: “What this paper’s tending to say is that they can in certain circumstances influence our breathing zone, and also influence the sort of atmospheric chemistry that’s going on.” The qualification matters: the reported mechanism is transport and transformation under modeled conditions, not a claim that every cruise emission reaches the ground or affects every location equally.

What the 80% and 8,000 figures mean

Chemistry World reported that the model attributed 80% of the total health impact of aircraft emissions to cruise emissions, corresponding to around 8,000 early deaths per year. Both numbers are estimates from the study’s model as described in the 2010 report. They are not direct measurements, current annual death counts, or a verified estimate of present-day aviation impacts.

The distinction between a modeled estimate and an observed count is essential. The report provides a useful account of what the study concluded, but the available account does not establish the model’s assumptions, uncertainty range, later validation, or how the result would translate to aviation and emissions today.

What the report said about geography

The 2010 report said the model placed the largest burden in Asia despite comparatively lower air traffic there than in the United States. It also described a rough transport pattern from Europe toward China. These are geographic results attributed to the historical model and relayed by Chemistry World; they should not be read as a current ranking of aviation-related health impacts or as an independently established description of pollution transport today.

Why cruise emissions matter for policy

If emissions released at altitude can contribute to ground-level pollution after transport and chemical change, air-quality assessments that consider only LTO emissions may leave out part of aviation’s modeled health impact. The policy implication raised in the report was to account for cruise emissions in air-quality regulation and in efforts to reduce total aircraft emissions.

This is an air-quality argument, not simply a claim about carbon dioxide or climate forcing. The study’s reported focus was particulate pollution and related health effects; its figures do not by themselves quantify aviation’s climate impact or establish what current regulation should require.

What this historical study can—and cannot—tell us

Chemistry World’s report, published 7 September 2010, cites an Environmental Science & Technology paper with DOI 10.1021/es101325r. The report supports describing the study’s modeled finding and its proposed atmospheric pathway. It is not enough to independently assess the methods or uncertainty, or to establish a current estimate. No newer figure is established here, so the 80% and roughly 8,000 estimates should remain attached to that 2010 study.
