Novak Djokovic came from a set down to defeat China’s Bu Yunchaokete 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-2 in the China Open Round of 16 in Beijing on Friday, October 2, 2026. The 2-hour, 52-minute victory sent Djokovic into the quarterfinals and extended his tournament record to 31-0, according to the China Open.
How Djokovic turned the match around
Bu took the opening set 6-4, putting Djokovic under pressure in a match that lasted nearly three hours. Djokovic levelled by winning the second-set tiebreak 7-2, then pulled clear in the deciding set, 6-2.
“It means a lot,” Djokovic said after recovering from a set down, according to the China Open’s day review. “Obviously when you win being set down and needing to really work your way back to the match, it kind of values as the double win, to be honest, a double victory in that sense because you’re proud of yourself, you’re proud of the effort.”
What the win means at the China Open
Djokovic advanced to the quarterfinals in his first appearance at the Beijing tournament since 2015. The China Open reported that he had won six titles at the event and that the victory over Bu brought his tournament record to 31-0. The Associated Press described him as sixth-ranked in its October 2 report; rankings are time-sensitive.

Bu’s history at the tournament

The late-night crowd and medical timeout
The match ended at about 11:30 p.m. local time, the China Open reported. Djokovic thanked the spectators who stayed late and said they had supported both players: “I want to thank them for giving support to both my opponent and myself. … Unbelievable support.” The tournament’s account also describes cheers for Djokovic, so the available reporting does not establish that the crowd favored Bu.
