DJI shipped an IDC-reported 10.4 million handheld smart cameras in 2025, more than the 9,438,876 digital cameras reported by CIPA member companies combined. The headline comparison is numerically accurate, but it is not a like-for-like count: IDC tracks portable stabilized action, panoramic and gimbal cameras, while CIPA’s total covers built-in-lens and interchangeable-lens digital cameras.
How many cameras did DJI ship in 2025?
IDC’s 2025 handheld-smart-camera tracker puts DJI shipments at a record 10.4 million units, according to contemporaneous reports by Amateur Photographer and PetaPixel. This is an industry-tracker shipment estimate attributed to IDC, not an audited sales figure publicly disclosed by DJI.
IDC’s own March 2026 announcement reports that the global handheld smart camera market shipped 16.65 million units in 2025, an 83% increase year over year, and that DJI accounted for 62% of those shipments. The 10.4 million figure is consistent with that share of the market total. Shipments measure units entering distribution, not necessarily cameras bought by end users.

What does “handheld smart camera” mean?
IDC defines the category as consumer portable imaging devices with processing capability, electronic or optical stabilization, resolution of at least 2K, and handheld use. It includes action cameras, panoramic or 360-degree cameras, and gimbal cameras. The category’s purpose is to count compact, stabilized devices designed for mobile capture—not every camera that can be held in a hand.

That scope helps explain why DJI’s Pocket gimbal cameras and action cameras contribute to its total. IDC identifies the Pocket 3 as a strong product in the gimbal segment and reports DJI action-camera shipments grew by more than 150% in 2025. These are market-research estimates, not individual product sales disclosures.
How does DJI’s total compare with CIPA’s camera shipments?
CIPA, the Camera & Imaging Products Association, reported 9,438,876 digital-camera shipments by its member companies in 2025. That total comprises 7,001,965 interchangeable-lens cameras and 2,436,911 built-in-lens cameras. Within the interchangeable-lens group, CIPA counted 6,311,054 mirrorless cameras and 690,911 SLRs.

The CIPA figures come from its reporting member companies; they are not a census of every camera brand worldwide. Nor does CIPA’s total describe the same product set as IDC’s handheld-smart-camera category. The comparison shows shipment scale, but it does not establish that DJI shipped more cameras than every Japanese manufacturer across every camera type, or that the products are interchangeable.

- 360-degree cameras: More than 2.5 million units shipped, up more than 50% year over year.
- Gimbal cameras: IDC reported shipments grew by more than 100% year over year.
IDC also estimates Insta360 shipped more than 3.4 million handheld cameras, led the 360-degree segment, and held more than half of the detachable action-camera segment. The figures illustrate that DJI’s lead sits within a broader, fast-growing market rather than a category made up of DJI alone.
Why compare these camera categories carefully?
Handheld smart cameras and conventional digital cameras are built around different capture needs. Compact stabilized devices are suited to recording movement, cycling, water activities, short videos, vlogs and everyday moments; wide-angle and 360-degree cameras can capture an immersive view. Mirrorless and SLR cameras use interchangeable lenses, while fixed-lens digital cameras make up another distinct group. These descriptions concern form and use, not image-quality rankings.

Shipment totals alone do not reveal revenue, profit, image quality, customer preference, or whether one format is replacing another. The data supports a narrower conclusion: IDC estimates DJI shipped more handheld smart cameras in 2025 than the number of all digital cameras reported by CIPA member companies, despite the two totals covering different definitions.

What comes next for handheld smart cameras?
IDC forecasts annual handheld smart-camera shipments could exceed 40 million by 2030, with a five-year compound annual growth rate near 20%. That is a forecast published in 2026, not a realized outcome. IDC also points to memory-cost pressure and competition as possible challenges to market performance in 2026.
