For smooth walking footage and solo vlogging, choose the DJI Osmo Pocket 3; for water, rough conditions, and mounting a camera on gear, choose the GoPro HERO13 Black. “GoPro Hero” can refer to several models, so this comparison uses the HERO13 Black, GoPro’s flagship HERO camera in the official lineup reviewed. The recommendation is based on their stated features, not a hands-on image-quality test. Pocket 3 is also no longer DJI’s newest Pocket model: its store lists Pocket 4 and Pocket 4P alongside it.

On a mixed trip, make the choice around the activity you cannot easily work around. If most of your footage will be handheld vlogs and wet or action shooting is occasional, Pocket 3 is a reasonable fit as long as you keep it dry. If water, rough handling, or gear mounting is central to the trip, HERO13 Black is the more practical single-camera choice. This is an inference from the manufacturers’ stated designs and protection features, not a field test.
How stabilization and handling differ
Pocket 3: designed for handheld movement
Pocket 3’s three-axis mechanical gimbal is its defining advantage for walking shots and smooth handheld pans. Its 2-inch rotatable touchscreen helps when framing yourself, and ActiveTrack 6.0 is intended to follow a subject. DJI also lists compatibility with DJI Mic 2 and Mic Mini transmitters, useful if you plan to record yourself speaking while traveling. See DJI’s Pocket 3 product page.
HERO13 Black: designed for exposed shooting
HERO13 Black pairs HyperSmooth 6.0 stabilization with a rugged body and a mounting ecosystem. Its strengths are a better match for footage captured during activities or from attached positions than for a compact, gimbal-led walking vlog. GoPro’s HERO13 Black product page lists the camera’s stabilization, modes, and waterproof rating.

Resolution, frame rates, and what they mean
DJI lists Pocket 3 at up to 4K/60fps for normal video, with 4K/120fps slow motion. GoPro lists HERO13 Black at up to 5.3K/60fps, as well as 4K/120fps, 2.7K/120fps, and 1080p/240fps. The specifications are on the manufacturers’ pages: DJI Pocket 3 specs and GoPro HERO13 Black.
HERO13 Black’s 5.3K mode provides more pixel headroom for detail and cropping than Pocket 3’s 4K maximum. Higher frame rates serve a different purpose: they give you more flexibility for slow motion. Neither the maximum resolution nor frame rate is a complete image-quality score; lighting, lens perspective, stabilization, and the final screen also affect the result.

Water resistance and durability can decide the trip
GoPro rates HERO13 Black waterproof to 33 feet (10 meters). DJI explicitly says Pocket 3 is not waterproof. For snorkeling, rain, or other wet activities, follow the manufacturer’s guidance for the camera and the specific conditions you expect. Do not treat Pocket 3 as safe for water without a verified, compatible protective solution.
A housing could make Pocket 3 relevant to some water activities, but compatibility and depth rating are not established here, so no particular housing is recommended. For a trip where water exposure is a core requirement, HERO13 Black is the more straightforward choice on the stated specifications.

Battery life: compare test conditions, not just minutes
The manufacturers’ runtime figures come from different modes and test setups, so they are not a controlled head-to-head or a prediction of a full day of travel shooting.

HERO13 Black uses a 1900mAh Enduro battery. GoPro lists a weight of 159g with mounting and battery on its US storefront. A spare HERO13 Black Enduro battery may be useful on a long shooting day; GoPro says this battery is not compatible with older GoPros. Carrying a spare does not remove the need to plan around recording mode and actual use.

Storage and packing checklist
Both cameras need a storage plan. Pocket 3 has no built-in storage and uses microSD expansion; GoPro specifies V30 or UHS-3 microSD for HERO13 Black. Check the relevant manufacturer compatibility list before buying a card, and bring enough capacity for the amount and resolution of video you expect to record. Should you buy Pocket 3 if Pocket 4 is available?
DJI’s store lists Pocket 4 and Pocket 4P alongside Pocket 3, so Pocket 3 is not the newest model in the Pocket line. DJI’s Canadian store comparison lists Pocket 4 at up to 4K/240fps and a stated 240-minute operating time, versus Pocket 3 at up to 4K/120fps and 166 minutes. Those figures are from a region-specific store page, not a universal comparison of real-world performance; availability and pricing vary by market. This comparison remains useful if you are choosing specifically between Pocket 3 and HERO13 Black. If you are buying new and the latest DJI Pocket generation matters, compare Pocket 4 and Pocket 4P before deciding; their presence does not make Pocket 3 the wrong choice for a gimbal-led travel workflow.
