Levi’s F-14 Tomcat is a large, turbine-powered radio-controlled aircraft, not a full-size fighter. The reported build cost is also not a verified $38,000: SlashGear says Levi estimated about A$55,000, which it converts to roughly US$35,000. The model is about 12 feet long, and Levi estimates it can reach around 217 mph with its wings swept back.
How much did Levi’s RC F-14 cost?
SlashGear reported on October 5, 2026, that Levi put the project at about A$55,000, or roughly US$35,000 in that article’s conversion. BeSnappy Aviation’s original feature describes the estimate as around $55,000 but does not specify the currency in its summary. Neither account substantiates the $38,000 figure in the headline wording, so it should not be treated as the confirmed build cost.
The aircraft began with a composite shell and was extensively customized. BeSnappy describes weathering, grime and oil staining, faded markings, moving pilots and additional vents. The sources do not identify the shell’s maker or a retail listing, so there is no established off-the-shelf equivalent to price.

How big and heavy is the model?
BeSnappy puts the aircraft at about 3.7 meters (roughly 12 feet) long and around 48 kilograms (about 106 pounds) dry. SlashGear reports a length of 12.5 feet and a dry weight of 105.8 pounds. These are source-reported figures, not independently verified measurements.

It carries around 12 liters of jet fuel and 2.5 liters of smoke oil, according to both accounts. SlashGear estimates its takeoff weight at about 132.57 pounds.
How fast does Levi’s RC F-14 fly?
Levi estimates a top speed of about 350 km/h (217 mph), with the wings swept back. The figure is attributed to the builder by BeSnappy and SlashGear; the sources do not provide an independent speed test or documented trial conditions.

What makes the variable-sweep wings important?
The wings can extend forward or sweep back, and BeSnappy reports that the two positions produce notably different flight characteristics. Levi described the difference to SlashGear this way: “In flight, with the wings out and the wings back; it’s like flying two totally different jets.”
The setup also has configuration-specific constraints: BeSnappy says flap use must be disabled with the wings swept back to avoid damage. The aircraft’s reported speed is especially associated with that swept-back position, while its wings-forward and swept configurations behave differently.

Why is this a demanding RC project?
This is not a typical small-scale model. Its roughly 12-foot span-length class, turbine power, substantial fuel load, moving variable-sweep wings and builder-estimated high speed make it a specialized aircraft to build and fly. BeSnappy summarizes Levi’s reaction by saying that flying it scares him every time. In the SlashGear interview, Levi explained his attitude toward the risk: “I try to be ignorant to that; otherwise, I wouldn’t fly it,”
