A DIY tricorder can measure a much wider mix of physical properties than a typical indoor air-quality monitor, but only if its builder installs the relevant sensors. Commercial monitors usually focus on specific pollutants and room conditions, with coverage varying by model. Neither label guarantees a particular sensor list or measurement quality: check the exact device and what it is designed to detect.
What can a DIY tricorder measure?
A DIY tricorder is a configurable, multi-sensor instrument rather than a standardized device category. Its measurements depend on the sensors and software in the build, so a feature list for one project should not be treated as a promise about another.
One documented prototype: Science Tricorder Mark 2
The Tricorder Project’s Science Tricorder Mark 2 groups its prototype sensors into atmospheric, electromagnetic, and spatial measurements. Its listed capabilities include:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Air temperature and relative humidity
- Three-axis magnetic field
- Color and light
- Absolute pressure
- Non-contact infrared temperature
- GPS position
- Ultrasonic distance
The project page gives prototype-specific examples of ±0.5°C temperature accuracy, ±3% relative-humidity accuracy, and an approximate ultrasonic distance range of 0–6 m; those figures apply to the listed prototype, not DIY tricorders generally. The page also describes a phone-camera imaging sensor as untested. See the Science Tricorder Mark 2 project details.

An EPA educational build
EPA’s AirMapper is another DIY example, designed to measure particulate matter and carbon dioxide (CO2), with additional sensors for temperature, humidity, and outdoor noise. EPA describes real-time readings at 10-second intervals and route-based collection: it can take measurements along a neighborhood path while someone walks or rides a bicycle. This is a documented educational project, not evidence that any DIY build meets professional performance standards. EPA’s AirMapper project page provides details.
What does an indoor air quality monitor measure?
Commercial indoor monitors generally concentrate on air pollutants and selected room conditions. Depending on the particular model, sensors may measure particulate matter (PM), radon, carbon monoxide (CO), CO2, formaldehyde, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), temperature, or humidity. Consumer monitors commonly cover some combination of PM2.5, PM10, CO2, total VOCs, temperature, and relative humidity; some add gases, pressure, or sound.

No single monitor necessarily detects every item in those lists. “Environmental monitor” is not a sufficient specification: inspect the exact model’s sensor list and measurement methods. EPA notes that low-cost monitors detect only pollutants or conditions their sensors were designed to measure. EPA’s guidance on low-cost air pollution monitors explains their intended use and limitations.

Can an air quality monitor detect carbon monoxide or radon?
Some indoor monitors include CO or radon sensors, but many do not. Verify that the exact model lists the pollutant and check what the manufacturer says about its sensing method and intended use. A device’s ability to measure one gas does not establish that it measures another, and a broad “air quality” label does not confirm either.

Low-cost monitor alerts are not substitutes for certified CO alarms or smoke detectors. EPA warns: “Unlike alerts from carbon monoxide (CO) alarms or smoke detectors, alerts (audible or visual cues) from low-cost air pollution monitors are not designed to warn of the potential for immediate danger to your health or life.” CO alarms and smoke detectors have a distinct emergency-warning role; EPA says CO alarms should meet the current UL Standard 2034 or IAS 6-96 standard. Read EPA’s safety guidance.
Can I trust a low-cost air quality monitor?
It can be useful for noticing patterns or comparing readings before and after an activity, but a low-cost reading is not automatically a reference measurement or a complete assessment of indoor air quality. EPA reports that performance information for some low-cost monitors is limited. Accuracy means closeness to the actual value; precision means repeatability. Look for performance reports or independent evaluations for the exact device and conditions in which you plan to use it.

Readings can be affected by placement, time in use, data processing, temperature, humidity, and mixtures of contaminants. EPA says these devices are not equivalent to EPA ambient regulatory monitoring data, and that there are no equivalent reference methods or monitoring networks for indoor air. Treat results as information about the sensor’s intended pollutant or condition, rather than as proof that a room is wholly safe or unsafe.

CO2 can be used as an indicator of human bio-effluents and as a control metric for demand-controlled ventilation. It is not a complete indoor-air-quality score: relying on CO2 alone may miss problems when occupancy is low or when VOC and particle sources are the concern, as discussed in the LBNL paper.

How to choose and use one for your question
- Define the measurement you need. A DIY tricorder can explore different physical domains if built with the appropriate sensors. For repeated readings of a particular air pollutant, start with a monitor that explicitly lists that pollutant. Neither device can answer a question about something it does not sense.
- Check the sensor and method. A particulate sensor, CO2 sensor, VOC sensor, thermometer, magnetometer, and GPS receiver measure different things; their readings are not interchangeable. Confirm the exact model’s parameter list and seek performance evidence for the intended use.
- Check how the data is handled. Some devices display or record readings; others use mobile apps or internet services. Consumer monitors often offer web or mobile visualization, but verify storage, connectivity, export options, and privacy behavior for the specific model. The LBNL paper discusses consumer-grade device features.
- Place an indoor monitor representatively. EPA recommends positioning it around typical breathing-zone height, 3–6 ft, with airflow around the device. Keep it away from corners, windows, doors, HVAC ducts, air cleaners, and local pollution sources that could distort readings. EPA’s placement guidance provides additional context.
When an educational DIY sensor kit makes sense
An EPA build-your-own particle-sensor kit can be a way to learn how sensors work and collect data as an educational activity. EPA explicitly says the kit is not intended for long-term monitoring, so it should not be treated as a substitute for a purpose-built monitor or a safety alarm. See EPA’s kit instructions.
