A “DIY solder sucker” can mean a homemade vacuum tool, an improvised substitute, or a repaired low-cost desoldering pump. For most one-off repairs, fluxed solder wick or an inexpensive manual pump is safer, faster, and cheaper than fabricating a complete tool. Build a powered system only for repeated work and only if you can safely handle heat, vacuum, solder containment, and electrical construction.

Choose the method that matches the joint

Job Best first choice
Solder bridge or thin film on a flat pad Fluxed solder wick
Small exposed pad near SMT parts Fine-width wick
Through-hole component or large solder deposit Manual spring-loaded pump plus soldering iron
Large ground-plane joint Strong, temperature-controlled iron with a pump or powered desoldering tool
Many boards or multi-pin salvage Powered desoldering station
No pump available Wick, flux, and a little fresh solder
Blowing molten solder away Do not use open compressed air

What a solder sucker actually is

A solder sucker is the common name for a manual desoldering pump. It does not melt solder: you heat the joint with a separate iron, then a spring-loaded piston creates a brief vacuum burst. A usable homemade design therefore needs a heat-resistant nozzle, an airtight piston or vacuum source, a seal, and a chamber that catches solder before it reaches tubing, a pump, or the operator.

Do not confuse a manual pump with a desoldering iron. A desoldering iron combines a heated hollow tip with vacuum; a desoldering station adds a powered pump, collection chamber, filters, and controls.

Option 1: Use solder wick as the simplest DIY alternative

Solder wick (desoldering braid) is fluxed copper braid. When heated, molten solder wets the braid and moves through it by capillary action. Cut away each saturated section rather than reusing it. EasyBraid explains the braid’s construction and use.

Wick procedure

  1. Clean and tin the iron tip.
  2. Lay an appropriate-width braid over the solder.
  3. Place the iron on top of the braid, approximately 45 degrees to the board.
  4. Wait until solder flows into the braid.
  5. Lift iron and braid together; do not drag the hot braid across the pad.
  6. Cut off the filled section and use fresh braid.
  7. Add compatible flux if the solder does not wet the braid readily.
  8. Clean residue when the flux chemistry or your process requires it.

Choose the width

Size Approximate width Typical use
#1 0.030 in / 0.8 mm SMD and micro-circuits
#2 0.060 in / 1.5 mm Small pads and SMD work
#3 0.080 in / 2.0 mm Medium pads
#4 0.110 in / 2.8 mm Large pads
#5 0.145 in / 3.7 mm Terminals
#6 0.210 in / 5.3 mm Large lugs and pads

These widths and applications are listed in Chemtronics’ application guide. Narrow braid may saturate too quickly; braid that is too wide heats slowly and can contact neighboring parts. Wick only removes solder exposed to the braid, so it cannot clean under an attached BGA or another component blocking access.

Option 2: Build a simple manual vacuum tool

A bulb or syringe can create suction for an educational or emergency tool, but suction alone does not make a reliable solder sucker. Ordinary syringes, printed plastics, vinyl tubing, and seals may soften, leak, or fail near molten solder. Keep the hot section short and removable.

Safe functional layout

Molten joint → heat-resistant nozzle → removable catch chamber → filter or solder-stop barrier → flexible tubing → bulb, syringe, or low-voltage vacuum pump

YIHUA 929D-V Electric Desoldering Soldering Iron Solder Sucker Desoldering Pump with Shorter Charging Handle and Desoldering Nozzles 1.0mm 1.2mm for Through-Hole Desoldering
  • This is a plug-n-play desoldering iron; This product regulates temperature automatically, and the temperature value is fixed (non-adjustable); Preheat the desoldering iron for approximately 3 to 5 minutes to ensure normal heating for soldering
  • This 929D-V desoldering iron integrates soldering iron and desoldering pump, you can enjoy the single-handed and continuous desoldering with its short charging handle to rid the hassle of changing grip positions. If you are looking to purchase a desoldering tool that can handle the desoldering jobs of through-hole components and removing excess solder (solder bridges) without jamming up, this is a great choice.
  • Different from the traditional use-and-throw desoldering irons, the 929D-V can be used, easily cleaned, and reused. You can lift and pull out the scrap solder storage tube and clean the solder out like a breeze. Meanwhile, we also included 2 different and interchangeable diameters (φ1.0mm & φ1.2mm) desoldering nozzles for different sizes of through-hole components. NOTE: change the nozzle after the desoldering iron has cooled completely.
  • This desoldering iron comes with a heat deflector at the end of the heating element, and this prevents the excess heat from transferring onto the hand when desoldering continuously. You can desolder joints after joints without your hands feeling uncomfortably hot.
  • Choose YIHUA with Confidence – Enjoy our 12-month US- exclusive manufacturer technical coverage and 24/7 professional assistance on Amazon. Note: This model is designed to operate on 110-127V with a US-standard power plug.
  • Put the catch chamber immediately behind the nozzle.
  • Make it easy to open, inspect, and clean.
  • Keep plastic tubing far enough from the joint that it cannot melt.
  • Design for disassembly if solder solidifies inside.
  • Prevent solder from reaching the pump or the user.

This arrangement is not automatically equivalent to a commercial spring pump: activation is slower, seals are harder to make airtight, and the operator must coordinate heating, positioning, and suction.

Option 3: Build a powered desoldering system

For repeated board salvage, the appropriate architecture is a heated desoldering handpiece, vacuum pump, reservoir, filter, tubing, and solder-collection chamber. A documented hobby build used a refrigerator compressor, vacuum reservoir, copper tubing, catch bottle, relay, and handpiece, but it required brazing, wiring, and mechanical fabrication. See the documented build as an advanced project, not a beginner recipe.

Stored vacuum, hot solder, glass containers, oil contamination, brazing, and mains switching all introduce hazards. Do not place mains voltage in a handpiece unless you understand insulation, grounding, strain relief, enclosure design, and fault protection. A refrigerator compressor is not automatically a suitable or safe vacuum pump.

Option 4: Repair a weak commercial pump

Before building a replacement, inspect the nozzle for blockage, the plunger for damage, the spring for proper release, and the seal for wear. Clean solder from the barrel and replace damaged tips or seals where parts are available. One documented repair improved a leaking pump by packing the O-ring groove with dental floss and lubricating the seal; that is an improvised, model-specific repair rather than a manufacturer-approved procedure. Read the repair example.

How to use any solder sucker without lifting pads

  1. Secure the board in a holder or on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
  2. Wear eye protection and provide fume extraction or suitable ventilation.
  3. Prime the pump by depressing the plunger until it locks.
  4. Add a little fresh solder and compatible flux if the joint is oxidized, dry, or difficult to heat.
  5. Heat until the solder is visibly liquid.
  6. Place the nozzle as close as possible to the molten solder.
  7. Trigger the pump while the solder remains liquid.
  8. Repeat instead of forcing the component lead.
  9. Use wick to remove the remaining film or plug.
  10. Inspect the pad and plated hole under magnification, then clean the tool.

iFixit warns that spring release can kick the pump backward and that suction and heat can disturb small SMT parts. Brace your hand and avoid using a pump immediately beside fine-pitch components. Adafruit’s procedure likewise calls for heating the joint fully, bringing the nozzle close, triggering the pump, and finishing with wick: manual solder sucker instructions.

Troubleshooting

The pump removes little or no solder

  • Heat the joint fully; add fresh solder and flux if needed.
  • Clean and tin the iron tip.
  • Center the nozzle over the joint or hole and trigger before the solder freezes.
  • Check for a leaking seal or clogged nozzle.
  • Use wick for the remaining film.

Solder remains in a plated hole

Do not pull the lead while it is bonded. Reheat, add fresh solder, and use the pump or wick. If the component is disposable, cutting its body or leads and removing each lead separately can reduce the force required, but sacrifices the part.

GBSTORE Blue 13" Sucking Vacuum Desoldering Pump Solder Sucker Remover Hand Tool
  • Circuit maintenance, integrated circuit disassembly, desoldering necessary tool.
  • Anti-skid design, easy to hold and use.
  • Quality material,high heat-resisting suction nozzle.
  • Working principle:Working like Needle Tubing.

A pad lifts

Excessive dwell time, repeated heating, dragging braid, pulling too early, excessive temperature, and mechanical force can all contribute. Repair normally requires a jumper, replacement pad, or trace repair.

Wick will not absorb solder

Verify that the braid is fluxed, the tip is clean and tinned, heat is transferring through the braid, and the width suits the joint. EasyBraid recommends matching braid and tip width and using a clean, tinned tip.

The pump spits solder or tubing melts

Point the nozzle away from people and electronics during cleaning and wear eye protection. Keep ordinary tubing away from the hot zone; use a heat-resistant nozzle and a catch chamber immediately behind it. Do not assume a material’s temperature rating without checking it.

Why compressed air is a bad shortcut

Do not blast molten solder across an open bench. A documented 100-PSI experiment notes burn, eye-injury, and accidental-short risks: Hackaday’s report. Open compressed air is not a casual substitute for suction. Any pneumatic experiment would require pressure regulation, filtration, shielding, and solder capture.

When buying is the better DIY decision

For occasional through-hole work, a basic manual pump is usually more sensible than fabricating a sealed, heat-resistant vacuum tool. Adafruit listed its manual solder sucker at $5.00 for one to nine units when checked, although the page showed it out of stock: product page and availability signal. Prices and stock change, so treat that figure as a dated reference rather than a guarantee.

Choose wick for bridges, exposed pads, delicate SMT cleanup, and final cleanup. Choose a manual pump for large deposits and plated through-holes. Choose a powered station only when repeated work, high thermal mass, or multi-pin salvage justifies its cost, maintenance, filters, replacement tips, noise, and workspace requirements.

Safety and cleanup

  • Protect eyes from ejected solder and pump kickback.
  • Keep hot tools and molten solder away from skin, cables, and flammable materials.
  • Ventilate soldering fumes or use extraction appropriate to your solder and flux.
  • Use ESD precautions for sensitive boards.
  • Wash hands after handling solder and contaminated tools, especially when lead-containing solder is involved.
  • Collect solder debris and saturated braid rather than leaving conductive fragments on the bench.
