DIY force-sensing joysticks can cost less than a commercial controller, but only when you already have suitable tools and want a custom control. A load-cell design measures the force you apply rather than how far the stick moves, using load cells, HX711 amplifiers and a microcontroller such as the Teensy 4.0 to appear to a PC as a USB joystick. The sensors are only one part of the cost: rigid mechanics, fabrication, wiring, end stops and calibration determine whether the finished controller is usable.

What makes a joystick force-sensing?

A conventional joystick measures displacement. Its gimbal, bearings, potentiometers or magnetic sensors detect the stick’s position and usually use springs to return it to center. A force-sensing joystick keeps the grip nearly stationary and measures the load you apply along the pitch and roll axes. This is the behavior associated with aircraft controls such as an F-16-style side-stick.

Because the output is force rather than travel, the mechanical load path matters as much as the electronics. The frame must be rigid, the force must reach the sensor predictably, and travel limits must stop the grip or linkage before the sensor, wiring or magnet becomes the stop.

The proven load-cell signal chain

Hackaday reported on October 14, 2026, on a build by “tekasza” that uses load cells on the X and Y axes, one HX711 amplifier per load-cell signal path, and a Teensy 4.0. The Teensy converts the readings into USB HID joystick axes, allowing games and flight simulators to read pitch and roll. That build also combines pedals, buttons and switches in the same controller.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Load cell: strain gauges change resistance as the applied force flexes the cell.
  2. HX711: the amplifier and 24-bit converter conditions the very small bridge signal for the microcontroller.
  3. Teensy 4.0: firmware filters and scales the readings, establishes neutral and endpoints, and exposes USB HID axes.
  4. Simulator: the operating system supplies generic controller axes; you assign and calibrate pitch and roll manually in the simulator.

A genuine USB HID game-controller descriptor should be verified before the enclosure is finalized. A board that merely sends serial data will not automatically appear as a joystick.

FSRs: faster prototypes with important compromises

Force-sensitive resistors (FSRs) change resistance when pressed. The usual circuit is an FSR and fixed resistor forming a voltage divider, with the divider connected to an analog input. Filtering and software calibration turn the changing voltage into an axis value.

Makers Making Change documented a four-FSR homemade joystick on April 18, 2017, and estimated approximately $40–$50 for the joystick. That project reported drift at maximum deflection and clicking and squeaking during movement. ElectricalFlux’s David Chen published a FlexiForce A201 and Arduino example on September 9, 2026: the single-sensor prototype was estimated at $28–$35, listed a 0–25 lb (0–111 N) sensor range and a 45-minute build time. Those are prototype estimates, not a guaranteed price or performance for a two-axis controller.

FSRs are useful for proving the concept or making a thin, compact control, but they are not precision metrology devices. The cited guidance warns about creep and hysteresis: the reading can change while force is held, and the value on release may not retrace the value on application. Treat the result as a relative control signal, not an exact force measurement.

Load cells versus FSRs

Factor Load cells with HX711 FSRs
Sensing principle Strain measurement in a load-cell bridge Pressure-dependent resistance
Axis stability Generally the stronger choice for repeatable axis output when the mechanics are rigid More susceptible to drift, creep, noise and hysteresis in the documented builds
Electronics Load cell, HX711 amplifier and microcontroller FSR, fixed resistor, analog input and filtering
Mechanical demand Precise load path, rigid mounting and protected end stops Simple pressure interface, but consistent contact pressure is still required
Best use Flight-simulation axes where neutral and repeatability matter Low-cost proof of concept or compact relative control

How to plan a force-sensing build

1. Prove the USB controller first

Connect the Teensy or another USB-capable microcontroller and confirm that Windows detects a game controller with the expected axes. Check the HID descriptor and read the raw axis values before building a grip or enclosure.

2. Build and constrain the mechanics

Make the frame rigid and define the force path. Add positive mechanical end stops so the sensor and its wiring never absorb impact. Provide strain relief, keep connectors from carrying structural loads, and eliminate bearing friction or spring asymmetry that could bias neutral.

3. Install and wire the sensors

For a load-cell design, connect each bridge to its HX711, keep grounds and signal wiring secure, and mount the cell so force is applied in its rated direction. For an FSR design, choose the fixed resistor and divider range so the analog input uses a useful portion of its voltage span.

4. Calibrate after the structure is finished

Set neutral only after the grip is centered and the frame is rigid. Record minimum and maximum usable values with the end stops engaged, then map them to simulator axes. Recalibrate if the mounting, grip, springs or cable routing changes.

5. Map the simulator manually

Generic HID devices normally receive generic axis names. Open the simulator’s controller settings, assign the detected axes to pitch and roll, set the response curve and dead zone, and run its calibration procedure. Do not assume the controller will be recognized with aircraft-specific labels.

What the complete cost includes

Sensor prices alone give a misleading impression. The bill of materials can include the microcontroller, HX711 boards or analog components, load cells or FSRs, a rigid frame, grip, fasteners, bearings or springs, switches, wire, connectors, power or USB hardware, printed or machined parts, tools, failed prints and replacement parts. Ian Stephens of Fly Away Simulation cautions that building a joystick is not automatically cheaper than buying a basic commercial stick because these secondary costs accumulate.

DIY becomes easier to justify when you need an unusual stick length, center mounting, left-handed ergonomics, helicopter-style travel or a controller you can repair and modify. For a first conventional version, Stephens recommends two smooth axes, contactless sensing when the budget permits, simple spring centering and only a few grip controls; a force-sensing project should likewise establish USB operation and basic axis handling before adding a complex load path.

Troubleshooting a drifting or unstable axis

  • Drift at neutral: recheck rigid mounting, neutral calibration, grounds and connector strain before increasing software filtering.
  • Noisy readings: inspect shielding, loose terminals and power or ground connections; then apply modest filtering.
  • Different force in each direction: look for asymmetric mechanics, friction, spring tension or a load cell being loaded off-axis.
  • FSR value changes while held: this is consistent with creep and hysteresis; recalibration may help, but it cannot make an FSR a precision sensor.
  • Axis never reaches full range: verify the divider or HX711 readings, endpoint stops and firmware scaling.
  • Simulator cannot find pitch or roll: confirm the device appears as a USB HID game controller, then assign the generic axes manually.
  • Unexpected console behavior: treat console compatibility as unverified unless that exact console and interface have been tested; a PC-oriented generic HID solution is not automatically console-compatible.

Is DIY actually cheaper?

There is no independent published benchmark establishing the lifetime cost or accuracy advantage of a DIY force-sensing joystick over a specific commercial model. The published figures above are prototype estimates, and component prices and availability change. The practical answer is conditional: an FSR prototype can be inexpensive, while a well-built load-cell controller can offer better repeatability but demands more mechanical work. Count fabrication time, tools and failed parts alongside the electronics before calling the project cheap.
