Divers have found worked wood up to about 10,500 years old beneath Lake Arendsee in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The Mesolithic timbers pre-date Central Europe’s first farmers and longhouses by about 3,000 years, but researchers have not yet established whether they formed huts, another kind of structure, or something not previously recognized for the period. Their significance depends on that answer.

What divers found at Lake Arendsee

Researchers from the State Office for Heritage Management and Archaeology of Saxony-Anhalt discovered the wood in summer 2026. As reported by news coverage, the remains lay beneath a thin layer of sediment at about 20 metres (66 feet) underwater. The finds include a 1.6-metre wooden post with clear signs of felling and working, as well as split boards up to 1.3 metres long. The heritage office’s reported age estimate is up to about 10,500 years.

After the discovery, researchers returned with a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) carrying high-resolution sonar to map the site. The wood is Mesolithic, or Middle Stone Age. The reported measurements and age come through 2026 news coverage of the heritage office’s findings; the primary release and detailed dating methods were not available in the coverage reviewed.

Why preserved timber is unusual evidence

Central European hunter-gatherers of the Mesolithic are generally understood to have moved through the landscape hunting, gathering and fishing rather than living in permanent villages. State Archaeologist Harald Meller has noted, in paraphrased accounts, that evidence of Mesolithic buildings in Central Germany has so far been known mainly as discolorations in soil. Preserved worked timber can reveal construction details that a soil trace cannot.

That does not establish that these remains are houses. If they prove to be permanent buildings or evidence of intensively used living spaces, they could prompt a reassessment of how some hunter-gatherer communities organized their lives. Seasonal structures or camps are also possible, and the wood’s function remains unresolved.

How the find compares with the first farming settlements

The reported age places the timbers about 3,000 years before the first farmers and their longhouses in Central Europe. That contrast matters because it distinguishes a Mesolithic discovery from the better-known farming settlements of the later Neolithic.

What remains unknown—and why the lake preserved it

Researchers have not determined what the timbers belonged to. They are investigating whether the wood came from huts or other structures, or from a kind of wooden construction not previously recognized for this period. Until that work clarifies the function, claims that Arendsee contained a village or permanent settlement would go beyond the available evidence.

The lakebed has gradually sunk in association with an underlying salt dome. That subsidence preserved an ancient shoreline and its remains underwater, where sediment covered the wood. Arendsee has yielded other submerged archaeological finds, including Stone Age fish traps, a medieval cargo boat and a later dugout canoe.
