Disposable domains can make phishing infrastructure inexpensive to set up and replace, but they are only one part of the problem. Nigeria’s ngCERT warned in January 2025 that phishing messages arrive through email, SMS, WhatsApp and social platforms, often impersonating trusted organizations and linking to fake forms or websites. Stopping those campaigns depends on identifying what is actually being abused: a domain registered for fraud, a legitimate site that has been compromised, or a legitimate platform’s subdomain.
What “disposable domains” means—and what it does not
“Disposable domains” is a useful shorthand for domains an attacker can set up, use for a short period and replace when they are reported or disrupted. It is not a measured category in the Nigerian advisory, and it does not mean that every phishing link uses a newly registered domain or that every short-lived domain is malicious.
ICANN’s 2024 INFERMAL report analyzes maliciously registered domains using its own classification method. It distinguishes those from legitimate domains later compromised by attackers and from abuse hosted through legitimate subdomain providers. The distinction matters because each case calls for a different response.
- Attacker-registered domain: The domain was registered for malicious use. Registrar or registry action at the DNS layer may be appropriate when evidence supports it.
- Compromised legitimate site: An attacker has added phishing content to a genuine site. The hosting provider or site operator may need to remove that content; suspending the whole domain can disrupt legitimate services.
- Abused subdomain service: The malicious page sits under a legitimate service’s domain. The platform may need to disable the abusive account or content rather than the parent domain.
Why low-cost registration and automation can help campaigns scale
A cheap domain is not, by itself, an explanation for phishing. ICANN’s global INFERMAL study examined registration and service features together. Its registrar/TLD model found associations between malicious registrations and features such as discounts, free hosting and API access, while more stringent registration restrictions and contact validation were associated with fewer malicious registrations. These are modeled associations in global data—not causal estimates for Nigeria, nor estimates of what a Nigerian campaign pays.

| Feature examined | Association in ICANN’s registrar/TLD model | How to read the result |
|---|---|---|
| Registration discount | A one-dollar registration discount was associated with a 49% increase in malicious registrations in the model. | This is a model association, not proof that a discount caused that increase or that a dollar is an attacker’s cost in Nigeria. |
| Free web hosting | Free web hosting was associated with an 88% increase in malicious phishing domains in the model. | The result concerns the study’s global observations; it is not a Nigeria-specific rate. |
| Registrar API access | API access was associated with a 401% increase in malicious domains in the model. | Automation can reduce the friction of registering domains in bulk, but the association does not show that all API use is abusive. |
| Stringent registrar restrictions | Stringent restrictions were associated with a 63% decrease in maliciously registered domains in the model. | The result points to an association with controls, not a guarantee that restrictions prevent phishing. |
| Registrant email or phone validation | Validation was associated with a 70% decrease in malicious registrations in the model. | This is also a model association, not a measured effect for Nigerian registrations. |
ICANN’s feed-based analysis began with 534,000 blocklisted URLs collected from APWG, PhishTank and OpenPhish feeds from August 2023 through January 2024. It extracted 108,000 registered domains from those URLs before filtering and classification, then analyzed 14,474 domains it classified as maliciously registered, across 165 TLDs and 31 registrars. The report, published November 8, 2024, applied filtering heuristics that included a 90-day registration window and evidence of DNS-level mitigation. Those figures describe the study’s defined global sample, not a census of phishing or Nigerian incidents.
Lower setup friction and bulk registration can let an operator prepare replacement infrastructure without relying on a single domain. That makes a takedown less durable if other links, accounts or domains remain active. ICANN’s conclusion says attackers “prioritize registrars offering lower costs and features that enable bulk registration,” but the study does not establish a Nigerian campaign’s marginal cost, prove that price alone drives abuse, or show that every inexpensive domain is harmful.

Why a takedown can be difficult—and sometimes risky
Stopping a campaign is a race between detection and the time attackers need to collect credentials or gain financial benefit. Even a short-lived phishing page may do damage before it is removed. A response also has to reach the party able to act on the particular infrastructure: a registrar or registry for a maliciously registered domain, a host or webmaster for a compromised site, or a platform operator for abusive subdomains.

The safer first question is not simply “How do we block this domain?” but “Where is the malicious content hosted, who controls that layer, and what evidence connects it to the reported campaign?”

- Support Emotional Awareness: Clients often struggle to name how they feel. This portrait deck gives them a clear starting point by helping them recognize their emotions through visual identification.
- Striking Black and White Portraits: Each card features a raw, expressive image designed to draw attention to subtle facial cues, removing color distractions so clients can focus on emotion alone.
- Flexible Use in Professional Settings: Whether in 1-on-1 coaching, therapy, workshops, or self-reflection, the cards adapt to any setting and create space for honest emotional exploration.

- Designed for Everyday Use: Comes with 52 cards and a simple usage guide in a durable, compact box—ideal for professionals working with teens and adults on emotional development.
- For an attacker-registered domain: Report the domain and supporting evidence to the registrar, registry, hosting provider and relevant incident-response channel. DNS-level suspension or deletion may be suitable when the evidence is sufficient.
- For a compromised site: Report the malicious page to the host and site operator so they can remove the content and secure the site. A whole-domain suspension may cause collateral harm.
- For an abused subdomain service: Report the specific page or account to the service provider, which may be able to remove the abusive content without affecting unrelated users.
Replacement infrastructure and the need to coordinate among multiple providers make disruption harder; the sources do not quantify Nigerian takedown times or how often replacement domains are used. A report should include the suspicious link, where and when it appeared, and a brief description of the impersonated organization or requested information. Do not forward a suspicious link by interacting with it or submitting information.
What is specifically documented in Nigeria
In its advisory Increase in Phishing Campaigns Within the Nigerian Cyberspace, published January 15, 2025, ngCERT describes phishing through email, SMS, WhatsApp and social platforms. It warns that messages may impersonate reputable organizations and direct people to fake websites or forms requesting personal information or bank details. It also lists possible financial loss, identity theft, data theft, device compromise and reputational harm.

The advisory recommends checking support-scheme claims through the relevant organization’s official channels, avoiding unexpected links and attachments, withholding personal or financial information from unverified parties, and reporting suspected scams to ngCERT. It also recommends that administrators screen social-media groups.
NITDA documents a separate, bounded example of registration checks: government websites or portals and long-term government projects are required to register in .GOV.NG or .MIL.NG zones. Its stated process includes an authorization letter signed by an institutional head or delegated officer, named administrative and technical contacts, verification and approval. This describes those government namespaces; it does not establish that equivalent controls apply to general-purpose domains or commercial registrations.

What the available figures can—and cannot—tell you
The Nigeria-specific ngCERT advisory documents campaign channels and practical safety guidance, while ICANN’s report supplies global evidence about features associated with malicious domain registrations. Neither establishes a Nigerian share of phishing links using disposable domains, the number of such domains used in Nigerian campaigns, victims or losses attributable to them, the cost of a campaign, or typical takedown time. The global model results should therefore inform the explanation of how registration economics may work, not be presented as Nigerian measurements.
For individuals, the most useful defense is to verify an unexpected request through an official channel rather than trusting a link because it looks familiar. For organizations and responders, effective disruption depends on classifying the hosting case correctly, preserving evidence and sending the report to the party able to remove the offending domain or content.
