A USB-C port can connect to a monitor only if the source device supports DisplayPort Alternate Mode (Alt Mode) or another video-output method. USB-C describes the connector; it does not guarantee video. Check the source, cable or adapter, and display or dock before buying anything.
What is DisplayPort Alt Mode?
DisplayPort over USB-C—also called DisplayPort Alt Mode—is a VESA standard that carries DisplayPort audio and video through a USB-C connection. VESA announced the standard in 2014. It uses USB Power Delivery for discovery and enablement, then repurposes some USB-C connector pins and cable wires to carry DisplayPort signals. The DisplayPort AUX channel and hot-plug detection use other USB-C signaling.
That capability is optional. A USB-C-shaped port alone does not tell you whether a computer, tablet, or phone can send video. Look for explicit DisplayPort Alt Mode support in the source device’s specifications. [VESA: DisplayPort over USB-C] [VESA DisplayPort FAQ] [VESA’s 2014 announcement]
How to connect a USB-C device to a monitor
- Check the source port. Confirm in the computer or mobile device specifications that its USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode. If it does not, a passive USB-C-to-DisplayPort cable or adapter will not add video capability.
- Check the monitor’s input. For a monitor with DisplayPort input, choose a USB-C-to-DisplayPort cable or a suitable adapter. For HDMI, DVI, or VGA displays, use an adapter intended for that output. Confirm the adapter’s direction: USB-C source to the monitor’s input.
- Match the intended display mode. Check that the source, cable or adapter, and monitor all support the resolution, refresh rate, color depth, and any compression required for your setup. A connector type alone does not establish the supported mode.
- Connect and select the input. Plug the cable into the Alt Mode-capable source and the monitor, then select the corresponding input on the display if it does not switch automatically.
VESA’s explainer gives examples including 4K at 60 Hz with 24-bit color without compression alongside USB 3.1, and 5K at 60 Hz with 24-bit color alongside USB 2.0. These are examples of possible configurations, not guarantees for an unspecified device combination. [VESA: DisplayPort over USB-C]

Does Alt Mode use up USB data bandwidth?
It can. Alt Mode assigns high-speed lanes in the USB-C connection to DisplayPort. Depending on the devices and configuration, the connection can reserve more lanes for video or retain SuperSpeed USB data while sending video over fewer lanes. VESA describes two-lane configurations, including DisplayPort 2.0 arrangements that preserve simultaneous SuperSpeed USB data. The available combination depends on both ends and the connection path.
VESA’s April 2020 announcement for DisplayPort Alt Mode 2.0 described up to 80 Gbps of DisplayPort video when all four high-speed lanes are used, or up to 40 Gbps with simultaneous SuperSpeed USB data in the configurations described. Those are specification capabilities, not a promise that any USB-C port or cable can reach those rates. [VESA’s Alt Mode 2.0 announcement] [VESA DisplayPort FAQ]

Do you need a cable, adapter, hub, or dock?
| Option | Use it when | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| USB-C-to-DisplayPort cable | Your monitor has a DisplayPort input and you want a direct connection. | The source supports DisplayPort Alt Mode and the cable supports the display mode you need. |
| USB-C video adapter | Your monitor uses HDMI, DVI, VGA, or another input rather than DisplayPort. | The source supports Alt Mode, and the adapter is designed for USB-C video output to that display input. |
| USB-C dock | You need monitor output plus additional ports. | The dock explicitly supports DisplayPort Alt Mode for video, and its specifications match your source and monitor. |
| USB hub | You need additional USB ports, not video output. | Do not assume a USB-C connector means the hub can add a display connection. |
VESA distinguishes a USB hub, as defined by USB-IF, from a dock: a hub supports USB but not Alt Modes, while a dock can combine hub functions with DisplayPort Alt Mode. A basic hub therefore cannot supply video from a source that lacks video output. [VESA DisplayPort FAQ]

What happens if the USB-C port does not support DisplayPort Alt Mode?
A monitor connected through a DisplayPort Alt Mode cable or adapter will not receive DisplayPort video from a source port that lacks that capability. Changing to a more expensive passive cable or adding a basic USB hub does not fix the missing source feature. Check whether the device offers another supported video output, or whether it supports a different display technology; the correct alternative depends on the exact device.
Will a USB-C hub support DisplayPort over USB-C?
Not by default. In VESA’s terminology, a USB hub handles USB data and does not support Alt Modes. A dock may support DisplayPort Alt Mode and provide hub functionality, but its specifications must say so. Do not treat “USB-C hub” and “USB-C dock” as interchangeable compatibility claims.

How to check compatibility before buying
- Source: Does the exact USB-C port on your device explicitly support DisplayPort Alt Mode?
- Display path: Does the monitor have the input you need, and is the cable or adapter designed to connect that USB-C source to that input?
- Display mode: Do the source, adapter or cable, and monitor support your target resolution, refresh rate, color depth, and compression requirements?
- USB data: Must the same connection also carry SuperSpeed USB data? Lane allocation can affect how much video and USB capability is available.
- Extra ports: If you need Ethernet, USB, or other connections as well as a display, choose a dock whose specifications explicitly include DisplayPort Alt Mode support.
VESA published a full compliance test specification for USB-C devices using Alt Mode in 2016, but the supported mode still depends on the particular devices and connection configuration. When specifications do not name Alt Mode or the desired display mode, ask the device manufacturer rather than inferring capability from the USB-C connector. [VESA’s 2016 compliance-test announcement]
