Disney’s own support guidance does not say a VPN will unblock Disney+. Its Help Center lists VPN or IP-anonymizer use as a possible cause of Error 73 and tells subscribers to turn it off. This article explains what Disney says, how to fix the error, what Disney allows when you travel, and why we do not rank VPN providers for Disney+ access.
What Disney’s official guidance says about VPNs
Disney’s Help Center article on Error Code 73, published February 17, 2026, states: “If you are attempting to use a VPN or similar method to access Disney+, disable it and restart the app.” The same page lists two possible causes for the error: trying to watch from a region where Disney+ is unavailable, and using a VPN or IP anonymizer. Disney’s Canadian subscriber agreement goes further. It says users may not “use any technology or technique to obscure or disguise your location when you are accessing the Disney+ Service.” The same agreement says geographic restrictions are enforced based on the location from which you access the service, and that Disney may use different technologies and methods to verify location. It also says content availability may be limited by law or by third-party rights. Source: Disney+ subscriber agreement (Canada).
The agreement cited here is the Canadian version. Disney’s terms for other countries may be worded differently, and the amendment date of this page is not stated in the version we reviewed, so treat the quotation as Canadian terms only.

What Error 73 means
When Disney+ cannot play a title, it can display: “This content isn’t available in your current location.” Disney lists two causes for this error. One is that the title is not licensed in your current country or region. The other is that a VPN or IP anonymizer is changing the location Disney+ detects.
The error does not prove that a particular VPN provider is at fault, and it does not mean a different provider would work. It means Disney’s systems either see you outside the available region or see a location-masking tool in use.
How to fix Error 73
Disney’s troubleshooting order is below. Follow it in sequence.

- Confirm your location. Use Disney+ from a country or region where the service is available. Check the availability page described in the travel section below.
- Disable any VPN or IP anonymizer. Turn it off in your device’s network or VPN settings. Menu names differ by operating system and by the VPN app, so look for the connection toggle or the app’s own disconnect option.
- Test your internet connection. Confirm your connection works without the VPN before you retry playback.
- Restart the device and the Disney+ app. Close the app fully, then reopen it.
- Contact Disney+ support if the error continues after these steps.
Why this article does not rank VPN providers
Many VPN sites publish “best for Disney+” lists. We found no current, independently verified source showing which VPN providers play Disney+ in specific countries, on specific devices, at specific dates. Disney’s own guidance does not name any provider as compatible, and it treats VPN use as a cause of the error rather than a workaround. A ranking built on that gap would imply access that cannot be guaranteed.
We also did not find documented evidence about free-plan limits for Disney+ access, so this article makes no claims about what a free plan can or cannot do.
If you are comparing providers yourself, ask each one these questions before you pay, and do not rely on a claim you cannot verify:

- Which countries were the service’s Disney+ claims tested in, and on what date?
- Which devices and apps are covered, and does the provider state Disney+ playback explicitly?
- How many simultaneous connections does the plan allow, and are there data or speed limits?
- What does the privacy policy say about logging?
- What are the refund terms if Disney+ does not play?
A provider’s answer to these questions is worth more than its marketing copy. Disney can change its location checks at any time, so no provider’s past result guarantees future playback.
If you are traveling
Disney’s Help Center states that while abroad, subscribers “can stream Disney+ content that is available in the country/region you’re in.” Content libraries differ by location, so a title you watch at home may not appear while you are away. Before you travel, Disney recommends downloading the content you want to watch, since downloads do not depend on the library available at your destination. Disney also says you may be prompted to confirm that you are away from home when you start playback.

If a title you own does not appear abroad, the local catalogue is the reason, not a fault in your account. Switching to a VPN to change your apparent location conflicts with the agreement’s restriction on obscuring location, and it is the cause Disney’s error page names.

If Disney+ will not play, work through the five steps above first. If you are at home and see the location error, the most likely explanation is that the title is not available in your country. If you are traveling, download content in advance and check which titles are available where you are. Disney’s support team is the right contact for account-specific problems.
If you want to rely on a VPN for other purposes, the Disney+ restriction is the part of the service’s terms to check first.
