Choose the Disney Dreamlight Valley villager role that matches the gathering activity you do most often: Gardening for crops, Mining for rock spots, Fishing for fish, Digging for buried resources, Foraging for wild crops and fruit, or Timebending for Timebending. There is no evidence-backed universal best role; the right assignment depends on your routine. You can also change a villager’s role later with a Training Manual under the current rules.
Which companion job should you choose?
Use the role that supports the activity you regularly perform. This is a practical way to choose, not an official ranking of roles by profit, speed, or overall efficiency. The six specializations listed in the Dreamlight Valley Wiki’s role reference are Digging, Gardening, Fishing, Foraging, Mining, and Timebending.

The role descriptions establish which activity each specialization supports; they do not establish that one role is best for every player. If your routine changes, you can revisit the assignment rather than treating the first choice as permanent.
Can you change a villager’s role later?
Yes. Gameloft’s Pixel Perfect update patch notes, published July 29, 2026, say Training Manuals can change any villager’s role at any level. That makes role choice reversible under the current guidance. The notes establish that Manuals can change roles, but do not provide a reason to assign every villager the same specialization.

How do friendship features affect role value?
Item Assist
The Pixel Perfect update notes introduce Item Assist at Friendship Level 7: a villager can gather an item related to their base role from an unlocked biome. This gives the villager’s role another way to be useful, alongside its connection to the corresponding gathering activity.
Best Friend Glow
Gameloft’s Your Guide to Best Friends says Best Friend Glow grants the highest possible profession bonuses while active. The guide names mining, gardening, fishing, digging, foraging, Timebending, and catching Snippets among the activities covered.

Role bonuses and a wiki-reported detail
The community-maintained Dreamlight Valley Wiki bonuses reference reports that companion bonuses depend on how many villagers share a role. It also says that when a Mining companion multiplies a resource bonus at a rock spot, the bonus is applied to the last item yielded. Treat that as wiki-reported mechanics detail, not as a developer-stated rule.
A practical way to decide
- Notice what you gather most. If crop harvesting dominates, lean toward Gardening; if you routinely clear rock spots, lean toward Mining. Apply the same approach to Fishing, Digging, Foraging, or Timebending.
- Consider what you want from friendship features. Item Assist and profession bonuses may matter to your plans, but they do not create a universal role ranking.
- Reassign when your routine changes. Training Manuals can change a villager’s role at any level, according to Gameloft’s July 29, 2026 update notes.
The available role descriptions and official friendship guidance support matching a role to your activity mix. They do not establish a best choice by coins, speed, or overall efficiency.
