Disney and OpenAI announced a three-year licensing agreement on December 11, 2025, intended to let Sora users create short, prompt-generated videos featuring more than 200 characters and visual elements from Disney, Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars. The proposed arrangement also covered ChatGPT image generation, possible Disney+ programming and Disney’s use of OpenAI products. However, OpenAI later discontinued Sora’s web and app experiences on April 26, 2026, and its API on September 24, 2026. The sources available do not establish whether the broader agreement closed, was amended or was terminated.
What Disney and OpenAI announced
The Walt Disney Company and OpenAI described the arrangement as a three-year license. Sora was to support short social videos generated from user prompts, using more than 200 licensed characters plus related costumes, props, vehicles and iconic environments.
The announcement also described the same intellectual property being available in ChatGPT Images. These were separate product uses: character video generation in Sora and image generation in ChatGPT Images.
Disney chief executive Robert A. Iger said the partnership would extend storytelling through generative AI while protecting creators and their works. OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman said the agreement was intended to demonstrate responsible cooperation between AI companies and creative businesses.

Which Disney characters were named?
The announcement gave examples from several Disney-owned brands rather than publishing a complete public roster. Named characters included:
- Disney animation: Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Lilo, Stitch, Ariel, Belle, Beast and Cinderella.
- Pixar: Baymax.
- Disney animation classics: Simba and Mufasa.
- Marvel: Black Panther, Captain America, Deadpool, Groot, Iron Man, Loki, Thor and Thanos.
- Star Wars and Lucasfilm: Darth Vader, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Leia, the Mandalorian, Stormtroopers and Yoda.
The licensed scope was described as including visual elements associated with the characters, such as costumes, props, vehicles and environments.

What the license did not include
The announcement expressly excluded talent likenesses and voices. In other words, it described rights to fictional characters and visual elements, not permission to reproduce an actor’s face, performance or voice. A character license should therefore not be read as a blanket authorization to imitate the people who portrayed or voiced those characters.

Disney+ plans were proposals, not confirmed launches
Disney and OpenAI said they would make a curated selection of Sora-generated videos available on Disney+. They also described collaboration on OpenAI-powered experiences for Disney+ subscribers. The announcement presented both as planned initiatives; it did not confirm that either feature launched.

Disney was also expected to become an OpenAI customer. The release mentioned API use for products and tools, including Disney+, and deployment of ChatGPT for employees. Those enterprise plans were distinct from the consumer Sora character experience.
The investment and legal conditions
Disney announced a $1 billion equity investment in OpenAI and said it would receive warrants to purchase additional equity. The release did not state that the investment had closed.

The transaction was described as subject to definitive agreements, corporate and board approvals and customary closing conditions. Consequently, the announcement alone cannot establish that every part of the transaction became legally effective.
What happened to Sora availability?
OpenAI’s service documentation gives two separate discontinuation dates:

As of October 2, 2026, neither Sora route described in the announcement is available. The official materials reviewed do not explain whether Disney’s license, the investment or other parts of the relationship were ended, renegotiated or preserved after those shutdowns. Any definitive claim about the deal’s final legal status would therefore go beyond the established evidence.
Safety, rights and provenance commitments
The announcement said OpenAI and Disney would maintain age-appropriate policies and other reasonable controls, prevent illegal or harmful content, respect content-owner rights in model outputs and respect individuals’ control over their voices and likenesses. It did not publish a detailed technical specification for enforcing the Disney character license.
OpenAI’s separate, general Sora safety materials describe visible and invisible provenance measures, C2PA metadata and watermarks on many outputs. Those measures are documented as general Sora safeguards and should not automatically be treated as terms specific to the Disney agreement.
