If DISH video keeps cutting out on a Samsung Smart TV, first determine whether the TV itself can display a normal picture. Run Samsung’s Picture Test, then check the selected HDMI input and the receiver-to-TV cable. If the TV test is normal, troubleshoot the receiver and satellite signal before assuming the television is faulty.
Start by identifying what is failing
When the picture disappears, freezes, or breaks up, note what the screen does and whether Samsung’s menus still appear. A black screen, a frozen frame, pixelation, and a “No Signal” message can point to different parts of the setup. If the TV menus display normally while DISH video does not, the display can show an image, but that alone does not identify whether the cable, receiver, or satellite feed is at fault.
- TV menus or other sources also look wrong: test the TV’s picture before focusing on DISH.
- TV menus look normal but DISH does not: check the HDMI input and connection, then the receiver.
- DISH reports signal loss: investigate the satellite path separately from the HDMI link.
Use Samsung’s Picture Test to check the TV
Samsung recommends its built-in Picture Test to help distinguish a TV picture problem from an issue with an external device. On many 2022-and-later models, the path is All Settings > Support > Device Care > Self Diagnosis > Picture Test. Some older models use Settings > Support > Self Diagnosis > Picture Test. Follow the on-screen instructions; exact menu names and availability vary by model and software. Samsung’s picture troubleshooting guidance explains the test and next steps.

Samsung says that when the TV can display a picture in another setup, the TV is not the cause of the issue; a normal Picture Test is useful evidence, though it does not tell you which external component failed.

Check the HDMI input and connection
- Make sure the DISH receiver is powered on.
- On the Samsung TV, select the HDMI input that the receiver is connected to.
- Check that the cable runs from the receiver’s HDMI OUT to a TV HDMI IN port. Reseat the cable at both ends.
- If the picture still cuts out, try another TV HDMI port or a known-good cable, changing one thing at a time.
Samsung’s receiver connection instructions describe the HDMI OUT-to-HDMI IN hookup and selecting the matching source. Its no-signal troubleshooting also recommends checking the connection and trying another cable or connected device where appropriate. A replacement cable is worth trying when reseating, a cable test, or a swap points to the cable; it will not repair a faulty receiver, satellite signal loss, or an internal TV fault. Samsung specifies a certified HDMI 2.1 cable for 4K at 120 Hz, not as a universal requirement for every DISH setup.
Some Samsung models offer an HDMI cable test. Availability and instructions depend on model and software; Samsung notes that certain tests are designed for cables shorter than 2 m. Use the TV’s own guidance rather than treating every model as having the same diagnostic menu.

Check whether the DISH receiver is frozen
If the image is stuck on one frame or the receiver does not respond, DISH recommends checking whether its guide appears and whether its front-panel channel buttons respond. For a frozen-screen issue, follow these checks:

If the guide appears, the receiver is responding; the program or video path may be the issue.
- If the guide does not appear, try changing the channel with the receiver’s front-panel buttons.
- If those buttons do not change the channel, unplug the receiver for 10 seconds, then reconnect it.
- Allow up to five minutes for the reset described in DISH’s frozen-screen instructions.
DISH gives different reset timing in its signal-loss guidance, including up to 10 minutes in that context. Follow the instructions for the symptom and receiver model rather than assuming one reset time applies to every problem.

Separate satellite signal loss from HDMI trouble
If the receiver shows a signal-loss message, the issue is upstream of the TV’s HDMI display connection. DISH says, “Signal loss is usually the result of severe weather.” During an active storm, reception may return when conditions improve. Check that the coax cable between the receiver and wall is connected securely, and look for obstructions affecting the dish’s view only if they can be checked safely.
Do not climb a ladder or go onto the roof to inspect or adjust a dish. If it appears to have moved or is damaged, arrange professional service. See DISH’s signal-loss troubleshooting guidance. Choose support based on the failed check
