Discover it Student Cash Back is a good fit for students who can track rotating categories, activate them each quarter and pay their statement balance in full. Discover advertises 5% cash back in changing quarterly categories up to a cap, plus 1% on other purchases, and matches the cash back earned during the first year. The trade-off is that the headline 5% rate takes more attention than a flat-rate card, and carrying a balance can make the card’s purchase APR more important than its rewards.
How the rewards work
Discover advertises 5% cash back on purchases in different categories each quarter, up to a quarterly maximum, and 1% on other purchases. The 5% categories require activation every quarter; they are not automatically applied. Discover’s card terms and rewards terms explain that eligible purchases depend on merchant category codes, and categories and limits can change. A purchase that seems to fit a category may not qualify if the merchant is coded differently.
Transaction routing can also affect eligibility. Purchases made through third-party payment accounts, mobile or wireless readers, digital wallets, or similar technology may not earn the category rate if Discover does not receive enough transaction detail. Check the current category terms before relying on a planned purchase to earn 5%.

First-year Cashback Match
Discover advertises an unlimited dollar-for-dollar match of cash back earned in the first year. Under its rewards terms, cash back earned from account approval through the first 365 days is matched and added within two billing periods. The terms also say rewards post after transactions are processed, which can occur after the purchase date, and may take one or two billing periods after processing. The match is therefore tied to eligible rewards and issuer processing, rather than an immediate discount at checkout.

Discover lists several redemption options: statement credit, deposit to an eligible bank account, select merchant payments, gift cards, and donations. Some options may have minimums or other terms.
Fees, introductory APR and ongoing interest
Discover’s product page lists no annual fee, a 0% introductory APR on purchases for six months, and a variable purchase APR of 16.49% to 25.49% after the introductory period. These are the terms shown on the product page, not a guarantee of the offer an individual applicant will receive. Discover says terms presented during an application may differ, so check the live, personalized offer before accepting it.

The introductory APR is limited to purchases and lasts six months. It does not make ongoing borrowing cost-free: after the introductory period, interest can outweigh the value of cash back if you carry a balance. Treat rewards as a bonus for spending you can repay, not a reason to spend more or revolve debt.
Discover recommends comparing student cards’ cash-back rates, annual fees and purchase APRs, and checking foreign transaction fees if you expect to use the card outside the United States. The current foreign transaction fee for this card is not established here; verify it in the live pricing terms before traveling.
Who can apply, and what credit-building means
Discover says applicants must be at least 18, meet income requirements that vary by age, and do not need a credit score to apply. No credit score requirement does not mean guaranteed approval: Discover still assesses applications against its eligibility and underwriting criteria. The issuer’s student-card guidance does not establish that every applicant needs a job; review the application’s income questions and requirements honestly, and do not report income that is not yours or otherwise permitted by the application instructions.
Discover says it reports student card account activity to the three major credit bureaus. That gives responsible account management the opportunity to contribute to a credit history, but it does not guarantee a score increase. Discover advises making payments on time and paying the balance in full each month. Late payments, nonpayment, or other negative activity on the card or other loans can hurt credit-building progress.

Cash Back versus Discover it Student Chrome
Discover’s official student-card comparison describes a different rewards structure for Student Chrome. The choice is mainly between rotating categories that require activation and a more predictable automatic rate on a narrower pair of spending categories.

These terms are from Discover’s student-card comparison page. Cash Back may suit someone willing to activate and plan spending around the current categories. Chrome may be easier to manage if gas and restaurant purchases make up a consistent share of spending and the cardholder prefers an automatic rate. Compare the live terms rather than assuming either card will earn its headline rate on every purchase in a category.

How to decide whether it fits
- Consider it if: You can activate the categories each quarter, your ordinary spending overlaps with them, and you expect to pay the statement balance in full.
- Compare alternatives if: You prefer a flat rewards rate, often forget account tasks, spend little in the active categories, or may carry a balance after the introductory APR ends.
- Check before applying: Confirm current categories and caps, the personalized APR and other pricing terms, foreign transaction fees if relevant, and the application’s age and income requirements.
Discover’s student-card guidance recommends weighing rewards, annual fees and APR alongside your own spending habits. A larger advertised rate is not automatically better: the practical return depends on qualifying purchases, activation, caps and repayment.
Verdict
Discover it Student Cash Back is a potentially useful starter card for a student who will actively manage quarterly categories and avoid interest by paying in full. Its advertised first-year match can increase the value of earned rewards, while the rotating-category rules make it less hands-off than an automatic or flat-rate option. Apply only after checking the current offer and deciding that its repayment and account-management demands fit your habits.
