Discover Import Export by RockStarLab is a WordPress content-operations plugin for selectively syncing material between connected sites, importing and exporting structured files, and making bulk content changes. The vendor describes it as a way to move chosen content without downloading an export file; that is different from migrating an entire WordPress installation, including its theme, plugins, hosting setup, and other site files.
Which WordPress job does Discover Import Export fit?
The best fit depends on whether you need repeated selective transfers, a one-time content move, or changes to many records on one site. The vendor describes features for all three, but its claims are not an independent test of performance, security, or preservation on a particular site.

| Job | Workflow described by the vendor | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Move selected content between active sites | Connect sites with API keys, choose Push or Pull, select records and filters, preview, set conflict behavior, and optionally include media. | Check that the current version and plan cover the content types and fields you need. |
| Import or export content files | Upload or generate structured files, map fields, validate and preview rows, then run a job. The vendor also describes export filters, job history, and scheduled jobs. | Confirm the exact format and direction supported by the current product tier; large imports remain subject to server limits. |
| Change many records on one site | Filter records, choose fields, preview changes, apply transformations, and execute a tracked update job. | The vendor currently identifies Content Updater and transformation tools as PRO features. Back up first and review the preview carefully. |
For staged content releases or recurring movement between sites that remain in use, direct selective sync is the distinctive workflow: according to RockStarLab, it avoids downloading an export file. For a one-time content transfer, file import/export or WordPress’s built-in exporter may be sufficient. Neither content workflow should be treated as a whole-site migration unless the transfer explicitly includes the complete installation.

RockStarLab says users connect source and destination sites with API keys, choose Push or Pull, preview what will move, apply filters, choose how conflicts are handled, and optionally include media. The vendor names skip, update, and duplicate as conflict choices. It also lists posts, pages, custom post types, taxonomies, menus, comments, and users in its broader sync and data descriptions.
#1 Best Overall
Availability varies by feature tier in the vendor materials: the WordPress.org listing describes core WordPress content in free sync and broader content coverage in PRO. Check the current version and plan for the specific types you need, especially custom data, users, WooCommerce records, or metadata. A listed capability does not establish that every custom field or attachment relationship will transfer exactly as intended.
This workflow is useful when both sites stay active and you need control over which content moves. A staging-to-production release, for example, may call for selecting a limited set of posts rather than replacing the destination site wholesale. Preview the selection and conflict behavior before running the job.
Does it migrate a complete WordPress site?
Not on the evidence described for this plugin. Its product materials focus on content records and related data workflows, not a verified transfer of the entire installation, including themes, plugins, configuration, hosting environment, and all site files.
WordPress Learn makes the same scope distinction for its native content transfer: it says a content transfer does not include site design, themes, or plugins, and that a theme may need to be activated on the new site for content to display as intended. See WordPress Learn’s migration tutorial. If your goal is to move a whole site or change hosts with the complete installation intact, choose a migration process that explicitly covers those components rather than assuming a content sync does so.
Which file formats can it import and export?
The vendor’s product page lists CSV, XLS, XML, ODS, and JSON across its descriptions, while the WordPress.org listing names CSV, XML, XLSX, and ODS imports and CSV, XML, JSON, XLSX, and ODS exports. Those lists are not identical, and XLS and XLSX are not interchangeable labels. Confirm the exact format, direction, and plan support on the current product page before preparing a file.
RockStarLab describes field mapping, row previews, validation, background jobs, exports with filters, and ZIP packaging. It also advertises metadata or structure support involving ACF, Elementor, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, Rank Math, and Gutenberg. Treat these as vendor-listed features, not guarantees that every site-specific schema or relationship will be preserved.
The vendor also describes Jobs Log history for reviewing or rerunning jobs and scheduling recurring import, export, sync, or update tasks. Scheduling and background processing can help organize repeat workflows, but they do not remove server resource limits or prove that a failed job left no partial records.

How do I migrate content between two WordPress sites?
First decide whether you need selected records or a complete site. For selected content, RockStarLab describes a direct sync workflow; for a file-based transfer, WordPress’s built-in exporter is a straightforward baseline. WordPress exports content in an XML/WXR file, but not the site’s design, themes, or plugins.
- Back up both sites. Use a recoverable copy of the source and destination before changing live content.
- Choose the scope. Identify the posts, pages, taxonomies, media, custom types, or other records required. Verify that the current plugin version and plan support them.
- Choose a transfer method. For the plugin’s advertised direct workflow, connect the sites with API keys, choose Push or Pull, and select filters. For a file transfer, use the current exporter/importer instructions and confirm format compatibility.
- Review before execution. Inspect the selected records, mapped fields, validation results, and conflict behavior. If using WordPress’s exporter, the destination may need an appropriate theme active to display content as intended.
- Verify the destination. Check representative content, metadata, media, and relationships on the destination before treating the transfer as complete.
WordPress’s Export Screen documentation explains the native export workflow. Its Import Screen documentation warns that a failed import can leave content behind; inspect the destination before retrying, because a second run can create duplicates.
How do I avoid importing duplicate media files?
The vendor describes a Media Folder Sync feature that scans folders uploaded through FTP or SFTP and registers files in the WordPress Media Library. Its FAQ names hash, filename, and filesize as duplicate-detection strategies. The WordPress.org listing also describes scanning server folders and registering files.
These descriptions concern detecting duplicate files during folder registration; they do not establish that every post-to-attachment association or other media relationship will be correct on every site. Review the results and verify representative media usage before relying on the library as fully reconciled.
Can I import large CSV, XLS, XML, or ODS files without timeout issues?
There is no universal guarantee. RockStarLab advertises background jobs for file workflows, but actual imports still depend on the file, server resources, hosting configuration, and the current plugin implementation. WordPress warns that files that are too large may exceed server memory limits.
Use a backup and test a representative import on staging or a disposable copy. If a run fails, inspect the destination for records that were already created before you retry; WordPress warns that a failed import can leave partial content, and rerunning without review may duplicate it. See the WordPress Importer documentation.
What should you check before using the bulk updater?
The vendor describes a workflow that filters records by criteria such as date, status, taxonomy, author, or IDs; selects fields; previews the proposed changes; applies transformations; and executes a tracked job. It identifies Content Updater and data transformation as PRO features. This can be more practical than editing records individually when the change is well-defined, but a mistaken bulk update can affect many live records at once.
- Make a recoverable backup and, where practical, test against staging or a disposable copy.
- Use narrow filters and verify the records selected before applying changes.
- Review the preview and transformation logic, especially when changing metadata or structured content.
- After execution, inspect representative records and the job history rather than assuming a completed job guarantees the intended result.
How do feature tiers and availability affect the decision?
RockStarLab describes a free core plugin and a PRO add-on, with paid plans organized by site count. Its product page and WordPress.org listing do not describe every feature boundary identically, and commercial terms can change. Check the current plan and plugin version for the exact content types, formats, updater tools, and scheduling functions you need instead of relying on an older feature list.
