Discord’s global teen protections are rolling out, but most users do not need to submit an ID, selfie, or other proof to keep using Discord. Discord says it automatically assigns more than 90% of users to an age group. Confirming adulthood is generally relevant when someone wants access to age-restricted content, spaces, or settings, or believes Discord classified their age group incorrectly.
What happened to Discord’s “next month” rollout?
The original schedule has changed. On February 9, 2026, Discord announced a phased worldwide rollout of teen-appropriate defaults beginning in early March. On February 24, it said the broader global age-assurance rollout would be delayed until the second half of 2026 while it expanded confirmation options, improved vendor transparency, and prepared technical documentation. In September 2026, Discord announced global teen protections and additional ways to confirm age. Discord’s February 9 announcement, February 24 update, and September announcement describe that chronology.
Local timing and procedures can differ. For example, Discord’s Brazil support page says age assurance began rolling out there on March 9, 2026, in connection with Brazil’s Digital ECA. Discord’s support information cautions that requirements and protections may vary by location.

No—not simply to continue using Discord. Discord says users can keep using core features such as messaging, voice calls, and non-age-restricted servers without confirming adulthood. The company says more than 90% of users will be placed into an age group automatically and will not be asked to confirm it. That percentage is Discord’s own claim, not an independently verified estimate. Discord says its age grouping uses account signals and does not use messages or content.

The practical distinction is between continuing to use Discord and accessing adult-only features. Discord co-founder and CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy wrote in the September 2026 announcement: “You can continue to use Discord without taking any action, but if you want access to age-restricted content, spaces, and settings, you can confirm your age group in User Settings > Account Status.”
What changes for teen and unconfirmed accounts?
Discord describes three age-group states: adult, teen (13–17), and unconfirmed. Adults generally experience no change. Teen accounts receive added protections; unconfirmed accounts can use core features, while some adult-only content and settings remain unavailable until adulthood is confirmed.

Sensitive media and content filters
Discord’s filters may blur sensitive content in messages from friends and server channels, or block it in direct messages from strangers. The result depends on where the content appears. Viewing blurred media or changing certain filter settings to “Show” requires confirming adulthood. The filter does not mean that all media is handled identically across every conversation or server.

Age-restricted spaces and settings
Age-restricted servers, channels, and commands require adult status. Discord also describes an additional age-restricted-server setting on iOS. If Discord has put an adult in the wrong age group, its support instructions say to use Account Status to confirm the correct age group.

Messages and friend requests
Other teen defaults include routing messages from non-friends to a separate Message Requests inbox, applying direct-message spam filtering, and showing alerts for friend requests from unfamiliar users. A parent may manage some settings through Family Center; many protections are not removable unless the user confirms adulthood.
How to confirm your age group
- Open Discord directly. In the app, go to User Settings > Account Status, or use the age-confirmation prompt shown in the app.
- Review the options presented. Depending on region, device, and prior attempts, Discord may offer Apple App Store or Google Play age-range sharing, a credit card, Google Wallet, AgeKey, a video selfie, or an ID scan. The menu is not necessarily the same for every user.
- Complete the in-app process if you choose. Discord says it does not request age confirmation by email or text. Do not follow an unsolicited message’s link; navigate to Account Status in the app instead.
What does Discord say about privacy?
Discord says it does not directly handle submitted identity documents or images; its vendors return an age signal. The company also says facial age estimation is processed entirely on-device and that underlying data is deleted after confirmation. Discord says age-assurance signals are used for safety, not to target ads. These are Discord’s descriptions of its process; the cited company materials do not independently establish the accuracy of age estimation or provide an independent audit of vendor handling.

Can you turn off the sensitive content filter without confirming?
Discord’s current guidance ties viewing blurred sensitive media and changing certain filter settings to “Show” to confirming adulthood. If a user has not been classified as an adult, those adult-only options may remain unavailable even though core Discord features continue to work. The specific controls available can depend on account status and platform.
