Discord Components V2 replaces a message’s traditional content-and-embed format with a component-driven layout. Set the IS_COMPONENTS_V2 flag to use it—but treat that choice as permanent for the message: Discord says the flag cannot be removed after it is set.
What changes when a message uses Components V2?
A standard Discord message can use traditional text and embeds. A Components V2 message instead puts its content into components arranged in the message’s components array. Discord describes the flag as enabling “fully component-driven messages.”

This is a change to the message format, not just a different way to style an embed. When the flag is set, the message can contain components only. Discord’s Message Resource says a request that also supplies content, embeds, sticker_ids, poll, or shared_client_theme fails with a 400 BAD REQUEST response. See Discord’s Message Resource.
When does switching make sense?
Use the standard message format if your message depends on traditional content or embeds. Choose Components V2 when you want a component-based layout or interaction structure and can move the message’s content into components. Neither format is universally better; the right choice depends on the message you are building.

- Stay with the standard format: the message needs content or embeds.
- Consider Components V2: the message can be built from components and benefits from their layout or interaction capabilities.
- Pause before migrating an existing message: setting the V2 flag is irreversible for that message.
How to enable Components V2
Discord’s guide says to set IS_COMPONENTS_V2 in the message flags when creating a message, executing a webhook, or sending an interaction response. Build the message content from components rather than relying on the standard content and embed fields. The flag’s API value is 1 << 15. In discord.js 14.27.0, the corresponding enum is MessageFlags.IsComponentsV2, with a value of 32768; that constant is specific to the cited library version.
- Plan the payload. Identify any existing content, embeds, stickers, polls, or shared client theme fields that would conflict with a V2 message.
- Compose the components. Put the message’s intended content in the
componentsarray. Discord allows multiple components and supports nesting them in layout components. - Set the flag. Include
IS_COMPONENTS_V2in the message flags for the create, webhook, or interaction-response request. - Handle interactions if needed. Interactive components generate interaction events. Your app must handle those events and can respond, update the message, or show a modal.

Can you add the flag to an existing message?
Yes, but Discord’s Message Resource says to reset incompatible fields to empty values when adding the flag while editing a message. In particular, remove the message’s traditional content and embeds rather than sending them alongside the flag. Otherwise, the request can fail with a 400 response.
Can you remove Components V2 later?
No. Discord says that once IS_COMPONENTS_V2 has been set on a message, it cannot be removed. If you may need a traditional content-and-embed message later, do not set the flag on that message. The documentation establishes this limitation for the message; it does not describe a way to revert it by editing.

How components fit together
A V2 message can contain multiple components, with components nested inside layout components. Interactive components are useful when a message should let a user take an action rather than simply read information, but they require application logic to process the resulting interaction event. Discord’s guide describes responding to the event, updating the message, or showing a modal as possible responses.
