If your Discord bot still appears online but commands or events do nothing, the process being alive is not proof that the bot is healthy. Trace one failing action through five layers: the host process, its Discord Gateway session, delivery of the event or interaction, the handler, and Discord’s response to the bot’s API request. The last layer that shows evidence of progress is where to focus.
Why a running or online bot can still be silent
A process monitor only tells you that an application process exists. The bot can still be stuck on a blocked event loop or handler, disconnected from the Gateway, missing the intent needed to receive an event, or failing to send a response. Discord’s online indicator is also not a reliable live health check: its Gateway documentation says some connection closures leave a session appearing active until it times out after a few minutes.
Discord describes disconnects as normal operational events: “Due to Discord’s architecture, disconnects are a semi-regular event and should be expected and handled.” Record the Gateway heartbeat acknowledgements, incoming events, handler activity, and outbound request results separately rather than treating “online” as a single status.

Choose one reproducible failure, such as a specific slash command in a specific server and channel. Note its timestamp and follow the evidence in order. The exact commands, callback names, and log locations depend on your language, library, and host.

- Confirm the process is making progress. Check uptime, recent restarts, CPU and memory pressure, and standard output and error logs. Find out whether the bot emitted its library’s ready or connected signal after its most recent restart.
- Check Gateway health. Inspect the last heartbeat acknowledgement (ACK), disconnect close code, reconnect attempt, and whether the session resumed or received a new Ready event. The Gateway Hello event provides the heartbeat interval for that connection; use the received value, not a hard-coded assumption. Discord’s documentation includes a 45,000-millisecond interval in an example payload, but that is not a universal interval. Missing ACKs between heartbeat attempts can indicate a failed or “zombied” connection.
- Confirm the event can be delivered. Identify the event or interaction that should trigger the behavior, then verify that the corresponding intent is included when the client identifies with the Gateway. Discord says events associated with an omitted intent are not sent. For privileged intents, confirm the app is enabled or approved for the intent under the current eligibility rules.
- Check command registration and permissions. For a slash command, establish whether it is registered globally or for the guild where you are testing. Check application-command permissions for the user, role, channel, and command, then trace whether the interaction reaches the handler.
- Check server and channel access. Verify that the bot remains installed in the server, has the permissions needed for the intended action, and is targeting the expected channel. Treat these as checks, not proof of a cause: a bot may receive an interaction but lack permission to perform the requested action.
- Follow the handler through its response attempt. Log handler start, the relevant decision or branch, and the point at which the bot attempts to respond. If an event arrives but the handler does not start, investigate dispatch or application logic. If the handler starts but no request is attempted, inspect its control flow, exceptions, and blocking work.
- Inspect the outbound API result. Log the HTTP status and response headers for the request. A handler’s response attempt is not evidence that Discord accepted it.
Use Gateway logs to distinguish a dead session from a quiet handler
The Gateway heartbeat is a connection-level signal, not proof that your command handler works. Compare timestamps for heartbeat ACKs and incoming events with handler-start and API-response logs. A healthy sequence for a command is: the Gateway session is active, the interaction arrives, the handler starts, and the response request receives a result.
If ACKs stop, look for the Gateway disconnect and close code, then verify that the client attempted the documented reconnect path. Discord expects clients to handle regular disconnects and may permit a session to resume; depending on the session state, the client may instead need to identify again. Record whether the connection resumed or produced a new Ready event.

Do not use presence as a substitute for those signals. Discord documents that closing with code 1000 or 1001 invalidates the session and makes the bot appear offline. Closing the TCP connection or using another close code can leave the session active until it times out after a few minutes. This explains why an online indicator can lag behind a broken connection.
When commands or events never arrive
Gateway events and intents
If the Gateway appears connected but a particular event never reaches your application, check the required intent and the app’s current privileged-intent eligibility in the Gateway documentation and Discord’s privileged intents guide. Discord documents close code 4014 for an unconfigured privileged intent and 4013 for invalid intents. Use the close code and Gateway logs to distinguish a configuration problem from a handler problem.

Slash commands and interactions
Slash-command registration is separate from Gateway liveness: application commands are registered through HTTP and can be global or guild-scoped. Check the command in the scope where you are testing, then review its configured permissions. If it is visible and usable but the bot does nothing, determine whether the interaction arrived and whether the handler attempted a response. See Discord’s application commands documentation for registration and permission behavior.
When the bot receives work but cannot respond
Use the API response rather than repeated retries to diagnose outbound failures. A 401 or 403 calls for checking authentication or access, not a silent retry loop. For a 429, inspect X-RateLimit-Scope and retry_after, then honor the retry delay. Discord’s rate-limit guidance also describes a global limit of 50 requests per second across most endpoints; rate limits and guidance can change, so consult the current article when investigating.

The same Discord support article reports an invalid-request limit of 10,000 invalid requests per 10 minutes and says it may result in a temporary Cloudflare ban. It identifies spikes of unhandled 401, 403, or 429 responses as a common contributor; shared-scope 429 responses are excluded according to the article. These figures are volatile support guidance, not a general allowance to target. Log errors, fix their cause, and avoid retry loops that amplify them.
Choose a fix based on the last layer that worked

A hosting change only addresses a problem when evidence points to process uptime, restarts, resource limits, or deployment connectivity. It will not fix a missing intent, unregistered command, blocked handler, or rejected API request.

Preserve useful evidence without exposing secrets
- Capture timestamps for the last process activity, heartbeat ACK, disconnect, reconnect, event receipt, handler start, and API response.
- Include Gateway close codes and sanitized HTTP status and response-header details.
- Keep tokens and other credentials out of logs, screenshots, and support posts.
- If the evidence points to a Discord-side or unresolved global rate-limit problem, retain the relevant timestamps and sanitized request details when contacting Discord support.
