Yes, if you have a disability and live in Northwest Florida, you can apply to abilIT, a free IT training program in Pensacola run by Global Connections to Employment (GCE) in partnership with Melwood. GCE says it is recruiting for upcoming cohorts. Its public pages do not list a Pensacola start date, application deadline, or seat count, so the fastest way to get a firm schedule is to contact GCE directly at 850-495-2351.

Who can apply

GCE’s local program page encourages people with disabilities in Northwest Florida to apply, and it specifically includes veterans with service-connected disabilities. The listed eligibility criteria are:

  • A disability or disabled-veteran status.
  • A high school diploma, GED, or equivalent. A college degree is not among the listed requirements.
  • Intermediate IT experience, or proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Melwood’s national abilIT page phrases this as “some intermediate IT experience or use of Microsoft Office,” so you do not need to be an IT professional, but you do need to be comfortable working on a computer.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States.

Documents to have ready

The national application guidance asks applicants to prepare three things: proof of disability or disabled-veteran status, a diploma or equivalent, and proof of U.S. work eligibility. Requirements can differ by local provider, so ask GCE which documents it accepts before you gather originals.

What the program includes

GCE and Melwood describe abilIT as a free, 14-week program. It combines technical instruction with workplace and professional development, plus job-search and employment support. GCE says participants can prepare for three CompTIA certifications: A+, Network+, and Security+. Melwood’s page lists IT Fundamentals+ and A+ exam preparation, and says that completing core training can leave participants ready to sit for certification exams or pursue entry-level IT work.

The two descriptions do not match exactly, so treat the credential list as provisional until GCE confirms the sequence for the Pensacola cohort. Two details are not established in the material available:

  • Exam vouchers. Neither page states whether certification exam fees are covered. Ask GCE before you enroll.
  • Testing. Preparation is described; scheduling and taking the exam are not. Ask whether testing is included in the cohort.

Timing and how to apply

GCE’s September 22, 2026 announcement says applications are being accepted for upcoming Northwest Florida cohorts. Melwood’s national application instructions say local programs run on a rolling basis and advise applicants to confirm dates with the local provider. Do not plan around older projected start dates from news coverage.

  1. Open GCE’s abilIT program page and complete the interest form, or call 850-495-2351.
  2. Ask for the start date of the next Pensacola cohort, the application deadline, the number of seats, and the selection timeline.
  3. Ask whether screening is required and what it involves.
  4. Ask whether certification exam vouchers and testing are included.
  5. Ask which documents GCE accepts for disability status, education, and work eligibility.
  6. Submit the local interest or application form, with your documents ready.

Melwood’s national guidance notes that a referral may be accepted, but you still need to apply online yourself.

Other routes if abilIT is not the right fit

VA Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E)

If you are a veteran with a service-connected disability that affects your ability to work, VA Veteran Readiness and Employment may provide counseling, job training, and vocational or post-secondary education. VA says you can apply if you have a non-dishonorable discharge and a service-connected VA rating of at least 10%. A Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor determines eligibility after an evaluation. VR&E is a separate benefit with its own process. Being accepted into abilIT does not automatically open VR&E benefits, and VR&E approval does not guarantee a seat in abilIT.

CareerSource Escarosa and WIOA-listed providers

CareerSource Escarosa’s program year 2025–2026 eligible-provider list includes several IT and cybersecurity options: a cybersecurity program at Pensacola State College, CompTIA Security+ and Network+ training through Applied Technology Academy, and CompTIA A+ and Network+ training through My IT Future Institute. Appearing on a WIOA eligible-provider list does not mean you qualify for funding or that a seat is open. Contact CareerSource Escarosa to ask about individual eligibility and funding.

Program background

A Pensacola News Journal report from September 2026, republished by AOL, describes the local initiative as aiming to give at least 60 disabled Northwest Florida residents a pathway into IT and cybersecurity, funded by a $250,000 legislative appropriation. The report quoted Katrina Simpkins, GCE’s senior director of community employment services, who said: “We’re hoping the curriculum we have will give students the foundation that they need and the confidence to go on and get their certifications.” In GCE’s own announcement, Simpkins said the program gives participants “the opportunity to prepare for industry-recognized credentials, connect with employers and build lifelong careers in technology.”

The 60-resident target and the $250,000 figure come from the news report and are not confirmed in GCE’s program materials. They describe the initiative’s scale, not how many seats a given cohort will have.
