Use the issue or preview page as the main link when reviewers need the bug’s description and discussion; add a direct file URL when they need to open a particular attachment immediately. If both context and quick access matter, include both—and check that the intended recipients can open each link after the report is saved.
Which link should you use in a bug report?
The two links serve different purposes. An issue page keeps an attachment alongside the steps to reproduce, expected and actual results, and discussion. A direct file URL takes a reviewer straight to one screenshot, video, log, or other attachment.
Use the issue page first when context is essential. Add a clearly labeled direct link when a particular file deserves immediate attention. This is practical guidance based on how platforms handle report pages and uploads; there is no controlled comparison establishing that one link type improves triage speed or resolution rates.
How to choose between the issue page, a file URL, or both
| Link choice | Use it when | Check before sharing |
|---|---|---|
| Issue or preview page | Reviewers need the description, reproduction steps, results, or discussion around the evidence. | Can the intended recipients open the page, including if it is private or confidential? |
| Direct attachment URL | Reviewers need a particular screenshot, video, log, or other file immediately. | Does it work for the intended recipients outside your own logged-in session? Does the platform treat the attachment’s access differently from the issue’s? |
| Both | The report provides necessary context, but a specific attachment also needs direct access. | Put the issue page first, label the file link, and test both after saving. |
Will everyone reviewing the report be able to open the attachment?
Not necessarily. Attachment access can depend on the platform, project or repository visibility, file type, and configuration. A URL that works for the author is not proof that it works for every recipient.

GitHub
GitHub says that attaching a file to an issue, pull request, or comment uploads it and inserts an anonymized URL into the text field. Files attached in public repositories can be accessed without authentication; attachments in private and internal repositories are limited to people with repository access. Check the repository’s visibility and the recipient’s access rather than treating the anonymized URL as public by default. See GitHub’s documentation on attaching files.
GitLab
GitLab documents that issue uploads use direct URLs containing a random 32-character ID. In public projects or groups, anyone can access attachments through their direct URLs, even when the issue, merge request, or epic is confidential. For private and internal projects, access to non-image files is restricted to authenticated project members; image access follows different defaults unless authorization checks are enabled. These rules make project visibility and file type important when deciding whether a direct link is appropriate. Consult GitLab’s user file upload documentation for the applicable behavior.

- Use tools like the Beat Maker and Midi Creator.
- Work efficiently by using Bookmarks and tools like Effect Chain, which allow you to apply multiple effects at a time

GitLab’s documentation style guide also advises against linking to confidential issues or internal handbook pages without explaining that access is required. If recipients may not have permission, say so near the link instead of leaving them to discover it after clicking. See the GitLab Documentation Style Guide.
Does the preview show what recipients will see?
Check the saved report, not just the editor preview. A GitLab issue opened on March 24, 2021, reported that certain links using protocols such as file://, smb://, or nfs:// appeared clickable in preview but became plain text after saving. That is a historical, platform-specific example—not evidence that ordinary web links are generally broken or that every tracker behaves the same way. See GitLab issue #325840.

Should you link a screenshot directly or provide text?
Choose evidence that helps someone reproduce or understand the problem. For many troubleshooting cases, copied text—such as an error message, relevant log lines, or command output—is easier to inspect than a screenshot. GitLab Support’s policy calls pasted text the most efficient option for its customers and support engineers. A screenshot is useful when the issue is visual or tied to the interface; GitLab Support specifically notes that screenshots can help explain UI or front-end problems. This is guidance for GitLab Support, not a universal rule for every tracker. See GitLab Support’s General Policies.
Before attaching a file, consider whether it contains sensitive information or executable code. GitLab Support cautions against file formats that can contain executable code, and GitLab’s upload documentation warns users to be careful when downloading unknown or untrusted files, particularly executables and scripts.

Final checks before submitting or sharing
- Link the issue or report page when readers need its description and discussion.
- Add a labeled direct attachment link only when immediate access to that specific file is useful.
- Check project or repository visibility, file type, and recipient permissions; do not assume the file inherits the issue page’s access rules.
- Save the report, then inspect how each link renders.
- Open each link as an intended recipient would, and remove or replace any attachment that exposes sensitive information or unsupported executable content.
