The Dimplex GDDE50E is a compressor dehumidifier that Dimplex Australia rates at 50 litres per day for rooms of 24–60m². That 50L figure applies only at 32°C and 80% relative humidity. Its 6.5L tank is small for that rating, so in a genuinely damp room you will either empty it often or run a drain hose to a floor drain.
This review is based on Dimplex Australia’s product sheet and instruction manual, both dated 2022. It is not based on hands-on testing of the unit. The points below separate what Dimplex states from what has been independently verified, and explain what the figures mean in everyday use.
What the GDDE50E is
Dimplex describes the GDDE50E as a 50L dehumidifier with electronic controls, adjustable humidity, automatic defrost, continuous drainage, a 6.5L tank, a filter-wash reminder, castors and a carry handle. The Dimplex Australia product page lists three preset modes and a two-year domestic warranty.
Published specifications, and where Dimplex’s two documents differ
The product sheet and the instruction manual are both dated 2022 and mostly agree. Where they do not, the table shows both values so you can check them against the rating label on your own unit.

The airflow and weight gaps are small, and the manual notes that specifications may vary. For a precise figure on your unit, use the rating label rather than either document.
Refrigerant
The product sheet names R290 for the GDDE50E. The manual’s combined table for the GDDE25E and GDDE50E does not clearly assign a refrigerant to each model, so attribute R290 to Dimplex’s GDDE50E product sheet and do not assume it applies to every GDDE model. R290 is propane, a flammable hydrocarbon, which is one reason the manual’s ban on DIY repair matters.
Noise
The 53dB(A) figure comes from the product sheet. The manual gives a shared maximum noise value that does not clearly apply to the GDDE50E, so treat 53dB(A) as a manufacturer rating rather than a measured level in your room.

The most recent Dimplex documents available for this review are dated 2022, so check whether Dimplex has issued newer versions before relying on any figure.
What “50L/day” means in practice
The manual states the 50L/day rating at 32°C and 80% relative humidity. That is a test condition, not a promise. A cooler or drier room will extract less water, and the manual does not publish extraction figures at other conditions, so this review cannot estimate what your room will produce.
The unit works by drawing air over cooling elements so moisture condenses into the tank. The air is then slightly warmed before it returns to the room. This means the GDDE50E is not a cooling appliance. The manual is direct about the side effect:
The manual states: “When the dehumidifier is in operation, the running compressor will produce heat, this is normal and may potentially raise the room temperature.”

Does your room fit the 24–60m² range?
Dimplex recommends the GDDE50E for rooms of 24–60m². Use that range as a starting point and check the following:
- The room’s floor area sits within 24–60m². A very small room or a large open-plan space falls outside the stated range.
- Doors and windows are closed. The manual says the unit operates more effectively with them closed.
- The unit will sit on a level surface indoors, for residential use.
- The room stays within the unit’s 5–32°C operating range (see placement below).
Water tank and continuous drainage
The 6.5L tank is much smaller than the 50L/day rating. Dimplex says that at high humidity the tank needs emptying more often and recommends continuous drainage as the more convenient option. Continuous drainage is supported, but the water tube is not supplied with the unit.
Setting up continuous drainage
- Place the unit on a level surface close to a suitable floor drain.
- Remove the rear cap to expose the drain nozzle.
- Attach a hose to the nozzle. Dimplex does not specify a hose size, so confirm that the hose fits the nozzle before you buy or use one.
- Route the hose to the floor drain without kinks or sharp bends.
- Run the unit and check that water moves through the hose and the tank does not refill. Expected result: the tank stays empty while the unit runs. If water still collects in the tank, use the troubleshooting table below.
Placement, clearance and first run
The manual gives two clearance figures. Its positioning section specifies at least 45cm on either side, while a separate safety passage says at least 50cm all around. Use the 50cm figure as the conservative choice. Keep the rear inlet and top outlet clear. Do not use an extension lead.

The specified operating range is 5–32°C. Below 5°C or above 32°C the unit is outside its range. During automatic defrost the compressor pauses while the fan keeps running until the frost has cleared.
Controls and modes
According to the manual, you can set a humidity target between 35% and 80%, or run the unit continuously. The fan has high and low speeds. Presets are Continuous, Living Room (45%) and Bedroom (55%). The product page’s feature summary does not give these control details, so rely on the manual for how the controls work.

The product sheet gives a rated power of 780W. Rated power is not a daily running cost. To estimate one, you need your electricity tariff and the hours the unit actually compresses, which varies with humidity and room conditions. A simple formula is:
energy (kWh) = 0.78 kW × hours running, then multiply the result by your tariff per kWh.

For example, if the unit ran at its full 780W for 10 hours, that is 7.8kWh. This is an illustration only, since real operation is cyclical. The product sheet lists noise at 53dB(A), as covered above.
Maintenance schedule
- Dust filter: Clean about every two weeks while the unit is in use. A clean-filter indicator appears after 250 hours. Remove the rear filter, wash it in warm soapy water, let it dry thoroughly and refit it. Never run the unit without the filter, and do not wash it in a dishwasher.
- Water tank: Empty and clean it at least every third day. Before storing the unit, empty, clean and dry the tank.
- Placement: Keep the clearances described above and check that the surface remains level.
Why has my dehumidifier stopped collecting water?
Work through the causes in the order below. Most are covered directly in the manual’s troubleshooting section.

The manual states the product is not made for DIY repair. Do not open the refrigerant circuit or attempt electrical work. Use the service contact information in the manual.
Warranty and support
The product sheet lists a two-year domestic warranty, and the product page links to support and spare-parts information. The full warranty conditions, exclusions, current parts availability and repair turnaround were not verified for this review. Confirm these terms with Dimplex Australia before buying or arranging a repair.
The Bottom Line
The GDDE50E suits a closed room of 24–60m² that is genuinely humid, where you can either run a drain hose to a floor drain or accept emptying a 6.5L tank regularly. It is a reasonable choice if you are comfortable relying on manufacturer ratings and a two-year domestic warranty.
Look elsewhere, or verify the figures first, if your room is outside 24–60m², if it is often below 5°C, if you have no floor drain and will not empty the tank, if you need independently measured noise or running cost for a bedroom, or if you are buying for a health or allergy benefit the manufacturer has not substantiated for this model. Check the current price with a retailer before purchase.
