In 2026, Google is reshaping Search around conversational and multimodal discovery, bringing advertising into some AI-assisted experiences, and adding AI features to campaign reporting. The changes are at different stages: some placements have expanded, others remain tests, and several campaign tools are announcements. Their effects on user experience and advertiser performance should not be treated as settled.
Search is moving beyond keyword-only discovery
Google describes people using Search to brainstorm, explore with images, and ask questions conversationally. Its UK outlook for 2026 also says people combine text, images, and audio in AI Mode. That points to a broader shift in how a search session can begin: a shopper may describe a need, investigate possibilities, and refine the request rather than enter one short product keyword.
For users, this could make discovery feel more like an ongoing exchange than a list of queries. For advertisers, it raises a practical challenge: an ad may need to be relevant to a developing need, not just match a single typed phrase. Google is positioning its AI experiences and ad products to address that shift, but the company’s stated direction is not proof that every user or advertiser will experience the same change.

The distinctions matter. A product expansion, a test in one country, and an announced capability do not imply the same access or reliability. Google’s product updates describe the following status as of the dates noted.

- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones

| Feature | What Google has said | Status and scope described |
|---|---|---|
| Ads in AI Overviews | Google reported that ads in AI Overviews expanded to desktop and additional countries during 2025. | Expansion reported in Google’s December 2025 highlights; the specific countries and account eligibility are not stated there. |
| Ads in AI Mode | Google reported tests of ads in AI Mode. | Testing in the US, according to Google’s December 2025 highlights. |
| Sponsored retail placements in AI Mode | Google’s February 2026 outlook described sponsored retail formats being tested. | Tests described; not a statement of universal availability. |
| AI Mode formats beyond retail | Google said it was exploring similar formats in other categories, including travel-like categories. | Testing or exploration described in the February 2026 outlook. |
| Direct Offers | Google described an experience for offers tailored to a shopper’s moment of intent. | Described as a monetization direction; broad availability is not established by the announcement. |
| AI Max for Search | Google described AI Max as a suite of targeting and creative features for Search campaigns. | Product capabilities described in Google’s December 2025 highlights; eligibility and availability can vary. |
Google’s May 2026 announcement also said it was experimenting with Gemini-based ad experiences for a more conversational Search experience. That is an experimentation statement, not a guarantee that the experience is generally available. Advertisers planning around any of these formats should verify current market availability and account eligibility in their own Google Ads account before building a campaign plan.
What these changes could mean for ad discovery and user experience
Ads may appear within a richer discovery journey
AI-assisted Search can include a user’s question, follow-up exploration, and visual or other inputs. Google’s direction is to bring advertising into those experiences, including AI Overviews and AI Mode. The company’s February 2026 Ads & Commerce outlook framed this as more than inserting existing ads into a new screen; Google’s Vidhya Srinivasan said, “We aren’t just bringing ads to AI experiences in Search; we are reinventing what an ad is.” This is Google’s characterization of its strategy, not an independent assessment of the formats’ value.

Relevance and user trust become linked
A placement that appears while someone is exploring a complex need may be useful when it clearly relates to that need. It can also feel intrusive if its commercial nature or relevance is unclear. Google says its ads are labeled, but the actual experience depends on the placement and interface. The company’s product announcements establish its direction; they do not establish how users will judge every implementation.

Research figures need their original context
Google’s May 2026 announcement cited an online Ipsos survey commissioned by Google in December 2025. It included 13,189 online shoppers in named countries who had recently made a considered consumer-goods purchase and used AI Overviews and/or AI Mode for shopping. The reported global average was not weighted to reflect population size. The cited methodology does not, by itself, establish a result about all shoppers or a representative global population.
A separate Think with Google UK outlook for 2026 says 83% of global consumers surveyed report using Google and/or YouTube daily, attributing the figure to an Ipsos survey. The reviewed passage does not give sample size or field dates, so the statistic should be understood as a survey figure reported by Google, not a population-wide independent estimate.
Campaign work and measurement are becoming more AI-assisted
Google’s August 2026 announcement described AI summaries on Google Analytics homepages, AI-powered insights on Google Ads homepages, prompted visual reporting in Ads, and Ask Advisor capabilities. The stated purpose is to help marketers find changes and analyze performance faster. These are product capabilities and goals reported by Google; the announcement does not independently establish their accuracy or that they improve campaign results.

Use AI-generated analysis as a starting point
- Check a summary against the underlying account or Analytics data before changing budgets, targeting, or creative.
- Confirm the reporting period, comparison period, attribution context, and filters behind a visual report.
- Ask whether a reported change matters to the business objective, rather than assuming that every detected movement warrants action.
- Record the decision and its rationale so the team can evaluate the result against its own goals.
Google’s February 2026 outlook also says it is re-engineering its measurement stack. That describes a stated product direction, not a completed measurement system available uniformly to every account.

AI Max for Search combines targeting and creative features, according to Google’s December 2025 product highlights. That description does not settle whether a particular advertiser can use every feature in every market or campaign. Check eligibility and settings in the account, and evaluate changes against campaign objectives and observed results rather than assuming that automation will produce a lift.

Google is adding more transparency about AI-made ads
In July 2026, Google said My Ad Center was gaining a “How this ad was made” panel. It is accessible through the three-dot menu or info icon on ads across Search, YouTube, and Discover, and is intended to indicate whether an ad was created or edited with AI. Google said it would automatically disclose use of its own generative AI advertising tools and provide advertisers with a control for AI used elsewhere. A label directly on an ad may also depend on local requirements.
The panel is a transparency feature about an ad’s origin; it is distinct from the ad label that identifies an item as advertising. Google’s Ads Transparency Center is a searchable hub for ads from verified advertisers, according to the company. Google’s policy description and rollout announcement explain the intended controls, but do not independently establish how complete or useful users will find the disclosures.
Users can manage ad personalization
Google says My Ad Center lets people manage personalization, limit selected ad topics, or turn personalization off. The company also says ads continue to appear when personalization is off; the control changes personalization, not whether advertising is shown. These are Google’s descriptions of its own settings and policies.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat Google’s traffic claims do—and do not—show
In an August 2025 statement, Google said total organic click volume from Search to websites was “relatively stable year-over-year” and that it was sending “slightly more quality clicks” than a year earlier. Google defines quality clicks as visits where users do not quickly click back. The statement did not give a numeric percentage for either claim.
Google also acknowledged that traffic is shifting among sites and that quick-answer searches may satisfy users without a click. Its aggregate account therefore does not establish that every publisher, query, or website is unaffected or better off. A site’s own analytics and the mix of queries it depends on are more relevant to assessing its experience than a platform-wide qualitative claim. Google’s Search team has said AI responses feature prominent links, visible source citations, and in-line attribution; that describes Google’s stated design approach, not a guarantee that every answer provides complete attribution.
Quick Recap
How advertisers and publishers can respond in 2026
For advertisers
- Separate confirmed account access from announced direction and limited tests when forecasting campaign reach.
- Check the current Google Ads interface and market eligibility before allocating budget to a new AI Search format.
- Review automated insights against source data and business outcomes before acting.
- Make creative useful to a person exploring a need, while ensuring that the offer and commercial intent are clear.
For publishers
- Track organic traffic and engagement by page and query group rather than relying on aggregate claims about Search.
- Look for shifts in referral volume and user behavior as AI-assisted answer experiences change.
- Do not assume visible citations guarantee a click or a consistent attribution pattern.
